You can use a socket that's the same size as the outer steel ring of the race hit with a rubber or copper or leather or wooden mallet. The big vice method rocks. It's a good idea to tape up the tang on those files, or get handles or I turn em round so tang away from wrists, and or file in a manner where the point is not able to engage with your wrists if you slip off the item your fileing For anyone without a big vice just get a big nut an bolt with big washers if the bearing starts straight it tends to continue straight. mild steel bar is good as a drift as it damages before hardened bearings. Putting a larger tube over the spacer tube gives you a straight line to scribe to. Best to all,

Just a(nother) hint for the installation. You can also use an threaded bolt min. 8mm diameter and 2 big washers, best same size as the bearings. Softly hammer the bearings a bit in so you don't have to hold them like seen in the vid. Don't forget the spacer! Put the bolt through the bearings and frame like the spindle, washers on and then screw them in slowly. You need also 2 screw nuts obviously. :)

Thanks! I did learn this the hard way as a teenager. I scratched up brand new frames. I have even bent brand new framed. I still do it this way today, even though i own a repair stand now.

Can you just use the same center spacer that was already in the bike or you have to cut the new one down

Depends if its too short or too long for the new bike. I have a big spacer and about 3 small spacers in mine. Whatever fits right works!

So when installing a new bottom bracket, the center spacer should be a bit loose in between the bearings after they’re installed? I measured my new spacer to the old one and they’re the same size but I don’t remember the old one being loose like that in between the bearings.

No. It should be tight. If the spacer is a bit loose, when you tighten the crank arms down it will put pressure on the bearings and they won't spin right.

Im trying trying change out my lodged barings at the end of winter in my state. If their frozen and rusted on. Would it help to take a blow torch an lightly heat up the baring and surrounding area. Would the loosen up the old frozen grease?

i would try a Penetrating lube like "PB Blaster" first. let it soak a few hours or overnight. then try again. I hope this helps let me know if it works.

Measure the diameter of the spindle or the inside diameter of the bearing

My bmx have american bottom bracket and the cup that pressed in won't come out eventho I used all my force. What should I do ? That bike is very old about 20 years +

Try spraying the cups with a penetrating oil like pb blaster and let it sit. Then Try again. I hope this helps.

It still didnt come out my bike is very old probably the bottom bracket cup stuck with the bb shell maybe welded ? No movement even tho i used penetrating oil.

Hi I'm sorry bcoz it finally came out!! I used to punch it by myself but then I tell my dad to punch it bcoz it very stuck. My dad punch it very hard and it came out. I thought it was stuck or welded but its not. Maybe I dont have some energy lol and also I'm still teenager. I'm very happy rn cause I just change my bmx crank from 1 piece to 3 piece about 2 hour ago :D :D. sorry for bad english btw 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Notice how he edits out @ 1:14? He ruined the existing bottom bracket and rather than show that just says that he preferes to replace them if he "feels it has been compromised." It is almost impossible to not ruin a bottom bracket if you choose to use the center sleeve. I recommend not using the center sleeve if you ever want to replace bearings without ruining the rest of the bottom bracket. It just really ticks me off how every time someone makes a mistake, they edit it out. That was the most crucial and hardest step in the video and he edited it out rendering this video not "step by step."

You could try spraying a PB Blaster or a different penetrating lube in between the bearing and frame and waiting a bit. I, personally, am impatient and would beat them harder and end up replacing the bearings.

No, you will need specific sized bearings to fit your spindle. If your spindle is 19mm, you will need 19mm Mid BB bearings. If your spindle is 22mm, you will need 22mm Mid BB bearings. When changing out chainrings, they usually come with a spacer that will help a 22mm chainring fit a 19mm spindle just fine. The dame cannot be said for bearings (at least I have not heard of anyone doing that). Hope this helps!

Have the bearings been in a long time? Try spraying some wd-40 or something similar in between the frame and bearing and let it sit for an hour. Then try again. Worst case scenario, you will have to beat the bearing pretty hard and destroy them and replace them.
