Removing Duplicates in Excel 2010.mp4

This 5 minute video shows you how to remove duplicates from Customer Data in Excel 2010 using a Customer ID number as the basis for duplicate removal. It uses two techniques - the first the 'Remove Duplicates' button in Excel 2010 and the second using a formula which allows you to see the duplicates individually before removing them. Hi Dale, sorry to hear that you're finding the audio difficult. I think it was the headset microphone - I have purchased a new one since. Hopefully you've found a new video that helps you. Basically two main ways to do it - one is the 'remove duplicates'' function in Excel 2010 (on the data menu). Or sort by a unique column and use this formula to flag duplicates: =IF(A2=A3,"Duplicate",)

Great video although by now I'm sure you're on to other things as Excel has been updated a few times by now. A crash on my main computer left me no option than to use 2010 and I couldn't recall the steps that you've explained. Just wanted to say it's still relevant and thank you. Just one question? Where in the #*!@ is the "Control Down Button"???

Glad it’s still proving a useful video. Ah I can see the confusion - when I talk about “control down” I’m holding down the control button and pressing the down arrow which will take excel to the last cell in your data - or at least what it thinks is the last cell, it will actually stop at any gap so it’s worth scrolling a little past to check it highlighted your full data set.

I was half joking about the Ctl-down button, but when I do it, excel will go to the bottom but will not highlight the columns. Like, putting A1 in focus, scrolling to the bottom & using shift+enter. Or, was your example for Ctl-down to ONLY get to the bottom? Again many thanks. Do you have a website for things like this, {tutorial), video?

Hi Fares, I used Jing (www.techsmith.com/jing.html) which at the time allowed you to create up to 5 minute videos for free. I now have a paid for version of Camtasia that allows for longer video recording and more features. As per previous comments, the microphone quality was the main downside to this one and I've since invested in a better microphone to improve sound quality for future videos.

Good question Sindrom, this post solves that one I think: www.techrepublic.com/blog/microsoft-office/use-formulas-to-find-multi-column-duplicates-in-excel/. If you have duplicates in both rows and columns - then my instinct would be to create duplicate rows for the people (e.g. 4 phone numbers = 4 rows) in order to create one master 'Phone' column, then de-dupe that as per my video, then separate out the data. There may be a better way but hopefully these two options help.

I just took a real list of names and addresses and then made them anonymous them for the video by over-writing columns and mixing things up. You could practice on any file of address records - if you don't have any for work, just export your Outlook / Gmail contacts into an Excel file and try with those. Mary
