But how do you properly remove it. I removed mine using a shovel, too, but it grew back.

I’m coming to this conversation 2 years later as I just found these videos. At 75 I’ve given up fighting and digging out vinca over and over it simply grows/creeps to fast and takes over beds. Decided at this age to let it do it’s thing and concentrate on how to live with it. Caution to others DON’T plant it … same with liriope!

My days of planting ground cover are OVER. It all spreads around everywhere creating a jungle look Vinca vine is awful and my summer project is to clear a large area across my backyard

Thank you for posting this. I have a problem with vinca vine, it has gotten very aggressive. In your video I was hard to see; did you take the shovel to get down into or under the roots? I ask because the roots are hard to pull out and if not all the way out the project is futile. Any suggestions or tips?

Hi Jennifer! 👋 Great question! Yes, Sean used a round shovel to cut a line where we wanted to start removing the vinca. Pushing the shovel down and then pulling the handle each time created the start of the removal. With either the shovel or a weeding fork (or other hand tool you prefer) you can start peeling and rolling the vinca almost like a carpet and get large portions of it. After this, there will be some parts of vinca that remain to still dig up. If it's still hard to roll or pull up, you can use the shovel to dig up sections of the vinca, like how sod comes only smaller. We hope that helps and thanks for watching and commenting! 👍💪😉

@@SpokenGarden I have been intimidated to start a massive vinca removal in our front yard. Thank you for the tips, I think I just need to get in there and get started.

Nice video, currently me and my wife are in the midst of an epic battle with wintercreeper euonymus. It spreads so quickly, and the root system is unmatched. I wish we were able to pick the top foliage... Not the case. These roots go down about 6-8 inches and have seen roots with dime-size diameters. Crazy for growing less than a year. Would love to see a spring update on this video. Cheers!

I'm currently in the process of removing a patch of vinca minor from the area between my apartment and my neighbor's patio. Just curious as to how deep you had to dig down to remove it?
@SpokenGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi Casey! 👋 Great question! We had to dig down about 6+ inches to get most of the roots. We started by running a line with a shovel to create our starting point along the edge where we wanted the vinca to stop growing. Then we started popping up the vinca long this edge to then roll it back, almost like sod, in mats to then pull those mats up. There were some stragglers 😲, but we got most of them and any that grew after that were easy to pull up. We would recommend doing the same with a shovel for your removal and also use a pitch fork or spading fork to plunge down into the vinca in incremental spacings to then push forward and pull back once each. Keep repeating this around and in the vinca you want to remove and this will loosen the soil and vinca roots to be easier to then be removed. Hope this helps and good luck! 😉💪

@@SpokenGarden thanks for the reply. I will definitely give this a try as I dont want to have to resort to using harmful chemicals to get rid of it.

Thank you for the video. I wish it was magic, but it seems no substitute for elbow grease. I have a yard full of it. If only it were edible.

Bull...not that easy.

Hello Edie. It's funny you say this because you saw us easily remove it in the video. It wasn't that hard to remove. For us, it just took some elbow-grease and patience, along with enjoying what we do every day. Let us know if you want some tips on how to remove vinca or other vines, like what we have in our garden. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Would love to see a follow up a year later now to see if it actually remained gone...
