34" Glow beauty dish for my favorite Bowens mount modifier because it has nice soft light but with nice contrast too. And the Godox AD-S85S (known as the 33.4" Glow ez lock) for my 300 Pro. Connects to the light without an adapter and is very portable.

Fantastic tips and tutorial! Question: in your Gear Recommendations you list the Kase Clip-In ND filter. Have you switched from STC Optics?
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 2 жыл бұрын
Both work great but the stc optics take longer to get and cost double. The Kase filter is a little more difficult to attach and detach to the sensor of the filter but performance is basically the same so I recommend it more.

Yes, either you use a tripod to move the light yourself OR you can kindly ask the subject to remove the light. Sounds funny but I wouldn't mind doing that.

Hey man, great seeing you and these very helpful tips and tricks 😊! May I add something? To summarise your 2 reasons for getting the light close we can say: (1) Quantity of light - with the inverse square law taken into account we know we loose light with distance, and (2) Quality of light - we want large, hence close, light sources to produce soft light. But, the inverse square law also has an effect on Quality of light! It creates faster fall off and that lovely contrast on the subject (that your portraits all have as well). I was sure you were gonna say this but you didn't, so I had too 😃😉 cheers!

How do you manage when you don’t have a lighting assistant and don’t have a tripod?
@fjhphoto

There is something I couldn't understand! When you masked the top layer, the one with the light, you were revealing the layer underneath, the layer with no light... but, it came out with the same light as the top layer... I'm probably blocked, but I didn't understand... I know how layer masks work, but here I didn't... Thank you in advance!
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 2 жыл бұрын
The layer on the bottom is the photo with the light in the way. The top layer is the photo without the light. That top layer was hidden behind a mask so I painted white to reveal the parts of that image without the light. Doing that "removed" the light from the bottom photo.

Guys, this is definitely not the way to do things unless you really have no other choice and by that I mean turning up unprepared. . Please learn the Inverse Square Law properly, there are predictable tables and you will be able to "calculate" the size of the light modifier and power of the flash you will need so that YOU CAN move your lightstand out of the shot and still get soft light. . I'm a 25 year high end commercial fashion photographer so trust me, start doing things properly and you will remain the photographer and not become a "retoucher".

So you calculate the exposure for the background, such that the subject drops into silhouette and the BG is subjectively balanced for the subject exposure under strobe.
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 2 жыл бұрын
Yup! But the ambient/background exposure isn't always going to mean the subject is a silhouette. In bright conditions, most likely a silhouette. But in lower light then not really.
