I've drilled out lots of rivets but I've never removed rivets from a machine plate. Great tip about the slot and the impact! I figured they'd be soft but man looks like those things are heat treated or something. I couldn't believe it when you showed the shattered rivet piece.

I would have thought they would have been much softer as well

Watched dad in days of old with hand impact driver. He removed door hinges from a ‘57 Chevy that way. I think the cordless impact is what put you over the top. When you had screwdriver on it I was telling myself you needed a wrench to turn the screwdriver blade. You thought of that too. There’s just too many things to hold and apply force. Impact driver for the win.

I thought about that and use my impacts drivers all the time, I was just a little worried about it sliding from the impact onto the brass tag but I’m sure it would have worked as well

I like these types of videos a lot! Never tried a vice grip on a screw driver… the little things…

Tip when using electric die grinders for extended time when they get hot enough that you need to let them cool. Use some pcv or abs pipe fittings to make holsters for them that you attach your shop vacuum to. This allows you to holster the die grinder and turn on the vacuum to pull the heat out in 45 seconds to a minute depending on how well you have designed the holster. I used to do a lot of cylinder head porting. The electric die grinders were cheaper than my air compressors to run the air die grinders

That is a very interning idea, I do use mine pretty often so will look into that for sure, thank you

That is a slick idea, stealing that for myself. Thanks much

Hey Adam, When do we get the shop tour???
@smalltownmachineshop68602 жыл бұрын
This coming Sunday or Monday, as you can see I was working on my workbench in this video which I could rarely do before, I have the shop about 90 percent organized now and finishing it is this weekends goal

I suppose I misunderstood the question. I thought the goal was to save the rivets as well as the tag. Why not just pop them off with a cold chisel? If they are hardened, it will be easier

Was trying to find a way from possibly scratching the plate, I knocked on off like that on the other and when it broke the head off it scratched it pretty good. Not a big deal for what I’m doing but was trying to be as gentle as possible

Dang I don’t think those are normal rivets. Did they have threads on them?
@smalltownmachineshop68602 жыл бұрын
They had a slight twist on them like a quarter turn

Good luck drilling. Perhaps if you are able to drill it maybe tap it to give you something to grab.

I’ll use a carbide drill bit most likely heat the broken stud first to anneal it a bit
@jeremycable512 жыл бұрын
Hopefully there through holes and you can punch it out from the back I don’t think I’d try to drill it to likely to walk out

No the lower two are blind, the upper to went all the way through, I have some smaller carbide drills or I may try and shatter it. Or since it’s cast I might heat it with the torch to anneal it a bit to soften it up
