I have a vise like that with big peck marks in it. I filled them up with lead and filed it flat. Well, I fly cut it close first. It worked out OK. So that's something you can consider doing. It can really clean things up.
@smalltownmachineshop6860Ай бұрын
@@1pcfred that’s a good idea, I have tons of lead around as well
@1pcfredАй бұрын
@@smalltownmachineshop6860 If the dimple is just a dent sometimes the lead doesn't stick but if there's any wall to the hole it'll stick in there good. But if you put some little grab holes in the dents then the lead will stick. It doesn't look bad either. If you do it you'll see. It really gives you a flat support surface back. Cleans it up. There's a little color variation between the lead and the base metal. They're both silvery though. I was really pleased with the results I got. I don't even remember it being that hard to do. Lead is a great filler. Just prep the surface good. Clean and grease free. You might even be able to make some dams to fix the sides. I'd lamp black those. Like pouring babbitt. The vise I did looked almost as bad as yours did. It was sad.

If you spot welded and make a good puddle and stop for an hour or two you can fill up those holes and then grind them down and bring it back into precision that vise can be made 100% again. It looks like you're getting a shot put together pretty good.
@1pcfredАй бұрын
You weld on that and you're going to warp it. Welding heat is warping heat. So I poured hot lead on my wasted vise. That worked. Then when you peck it again it's not too bad either.

One can only hope that whoever is responsible for the state of that vise - has met their end by the merciless inertia of a large lathe chuck/shaft spider at some 240rpm... That is not a human being nor an operator worthy of the graceful majesty that machines are in their cold splendor... I suppose that the vise is still operational even at that state, but it is a damn shame... And while it can be filled out with bronze, nickel, lead or what have you - if you want to try to ameliorate some of the horrors - it is ultimately futile, as all of those will be just as visible as the original damage, and will offer 0 structural integrity along with potential distortion due to differential metal shrink rates at temp. delta - that and the fact that you had to flow that filler in at a certain temp, which brings it`s own concerns... I`ve seen people fill out old drill-press tables that have been molested, and the best it offered was a meager masking effect of the damage if you squinted, stood at the perfect angle and distance(like 30ft away) as to totally render yourself unable to perceive the colour change... Either way, nevermind my wrath - i`m glad that you snagged a useful piece and even moreso that you saved it from the crushers... It may be molested, but it still is a cool old piece that will bite down and into stock and allow the mill to do her work with grace... Best regards! Steuss
