Removing Porcupine Quills - Porcupine Attack
Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! In this video, Piper had a run-in with a porcupine. With over 300 quills throughout her whole body, we needed professional veterinary care. Porcupine incidents are very common with hunting dogs and can often be taken care of on the tailgate, but this was not one of those situations. Follow along to see how well Piper did with this procedure.

I had a Timber Wolf / German Sheppard mix that was actually the neighbor's dog that hung around our house. Every year he would come to me with a nose full of quills, tail between his legs. He would lay down and wait. My two brothers (big boys) would sit on him, and I would yank one out with the needle nose pliers. We would all jump clear, as he came up in full fight mode (he was 100+ pounds). In a few seconds he would stop, wage his tail and lay down so we could do the next one. He never bit us. He never fought us. He knew he needed help. He knew it would suck, but he trusted us to do it. Truly amazing, considering he adopted us.

I read somewhere that it’s best to cut the quills 🤔 please note I am in no way a professional in the veterinary area of any kind, this is just something I read/saw on KZbin 😊

Thanks for posting. I usually question what I hear/see in videos on KZbin BUT hearing information from the veterinarian was awesome. I have heard the thing about cutting the tips off to make it easier to remove and I’m glad the Vet addressed that. Great video.

My teacher had a dog just like that, and omg it's powerful dogs. Our class was on a weekend skiing trip in the mountains and i got to tie the dog around my waist to pull me and for like 6 hours on the way to the cabin we'd take turns letting her pull us and she never seemed to get tired haha

ouch. Pulled a lot of quills out of my dogs over the years, but never more than about a dozen in the nose at one time. I now live in south america. no quills to deal with. Just the yearly visit from the local skunk.

Thank you for NOT yanking the quills out yourself and providing her proper care with a vet. I saw a video years ago where the owners didn't want or care to take their dogs to the vet because it was about 30 minutes away and were yanking them out without the dog being sedated.

Everyone else would just do it themselves, and instead of using anesthetic they use the hold it down method. Saves $300 or whatever

How would you like if someone held you down without anesthesia which this dog didn’t have. It had light sedation. Other wise it would be intubated. (You dumb fuck) and have your teeth pulled out. One by one. Or how about you fall on a cactus and you are forced to endure the pain of removing each spine, one by one. Do you wanna test your theory out? Didn’t think so.
