As you say chains rust very easy in bad salty weather i use to clean my chain with white spirit, dry it with an air line then lube it really well,your doing a fine job with your videos ,ride safe sweet

My go-to chain cleaner and lube is just paraffin. Nice and cheap + effective, doesn't degrade O-rings.

Have a look at the MC Garage test on here a few years back, they left O-Rings from a chain in WD40 for a month I think it was - no ill effect at all. I think it was Bikesocial that did a similar test too, same result. Bike manufacturers recommend paraffin to clean chains, the biggest ingredient in WD40 in naphtha/paraffin I believe. I've used WD40 on my chain for knocking on for 30 years and never a problem. My current bike is a 2017 with a OEM D.I.D. Great tutorial. Have you ever considered using paraffin (kerosene)? This is what I use on my chain and it literally seems to melt away all the muck on the chain. Great advice regarding the clothes (seen too many who don't think this is important). Keep up the awesome work. Stay safe.

I havent tried paraffin, but I know a lot of people use it. My old honda manual even recommended it! And I have a light grey pair of joggers lying around covered in chain goop :( ever since then I wear overalls haha

Hi great videos 👍 a good chain and all-round clean is bilthamber surfex hd, it's water based and does a fantastic job, it's very versatile and is used at various levels of dilution depending on the task, I use it at about 10% concentration for chains so it's very cost effective, keep up the good work and stay safe 👍

Good stuff. As far as chain lube goes, try gear oil. A lot of D.I.D chains state to lubricate with 80w90 (pretty sure it 80w90). Bit of gear oil on a tooth brush and brush it in, a little goes quite a long way

Have you tried Maxima Chain Clean? I like it but I may just buy kerosene , the kerosene that is safe for chains not the other type. Seems like the idea is to get as much grit as possible off without damaging chain o ring. 100 different ways to do that and lube chain as well. I find it fascinating. I have only tried Maxima and Motul. Maxima was more heavy duty as a chain cleaner. Motul was very good too but a little less effective and more expensive but still fine. Good for road trip. Smaller lighter bottle. Doe the job fine. Maxima sells small can as well.

I havent tried it, but it sounds good. It's nice to have a gentle chain cleaner for normal cleans and something a bit more intense for heavier cleans / rust removal

Very good tutorial. Nicely done. Shame I'm a lazy bastard with a shaft drive though. xD One thing I would add, is that whilst getting wd40 on your tires is not ideal. Getting it on your brake rotor and then whilst spinning the rear wheel, saturating the brake pads with it... is definitely the bigger of the two risks. Tires can handle grease and grime... since they come in contact with it all the time. Brake pads on the other hand will take ages to wear down enough to rid the WD40 from themselves.

Good point! My brake disk and rotor is on the other side of the rim, so hopefully I protected and rinsed well enough. If you have two brake disks probably there's more to think about I'm definitely not jealous of those with shaft and belt driven bikes... 😉
