This video is a step by step review of how I uninstalled my Milwaukee m18 still chuck and how I installed the new one.
Unfortunately the installation was very difficult.both the screw and the chuck were very stuck. I struggled to get the screw out, which in this drill was a T40 bit. After getting that out I had to cut the chuck off with a Milwaukee 12v and 18v band saw.
From what I’ve heard, not all are like this. But some are harder than others. Definitely let me know you got yours off.

Unfortunately, you literally screwed yourself. When removing the reverse threaded retaining screw, you tightened the chuck around the allen wrench. So as you loosened the retaining screw you also over-tightened the chuck. Next time, don't crank the chuck down on the allen wrench until AFTER the retaining screw has been removed. Remember, the retaining screw is reverse threaded and the chuck is standard threaded.

That’s exactly what I said as soon as he tightened the chuck. After seeing a mistake that obvious it was hard to trust this guy as truly knowledgeable about the tools he’s addicted to lol. But in all honesty, he may have dealt with the same s*it show regardless of whether or not he accidentally tightened it the way he did. Once those chicks seize up the can be a bear to remove.

Had the same problem, even with the retaining screw removed prior! Had to put the chuck through a few heat/cool cycles, then slide the end of the allen into a hole in a STATIONARY sheet of steel and torque the drill with everything I could muster. What a BIT**!! Always seem to have one issue or another with Milwaukee tools.

The chuck should open up eventually. I don't understand why it behaved as if it was welded. Any way Milwaukee tools are not repair - friendly. but they give good service before getting faulty.

Although your video is 18 minutes long, it only took me 10 minutes of watching to realize it’s easier to just buy a new cordless drill. I got more than 7 years of good use with my Milwaukee, so I call that a win.

My chuck was stuck with 1 of the 3 jaws sticking out further. I beat on it with a hammer and PB Blaster. I worked it back and forth till it finally loosened up a little. I then took a phillips #3 bit in my M12 impact and backed out the screw slightly. It wouldn't come out all the way. I then chucked a large allen wrench in the drill and whacked it with a hammer. It came loose. Thanks for the video. it helped!

Just attempted this. Get the first screw clockwise with a t45 and heat it to break the loctite. Im now stuck on chuck and managed to break a 8mm socket on a 8mm allen key. I think the last one is actually a t50 will be cutting it open as im pretty sure i did the wrong direction and its now stuck to point where the drill is actually flexing. If you are attempting this, do your research. And the correct info is hard to find

Good sharing. Nothing hidden. anatomy of the chuck 😂 Milwaukee make excellent tools that survive hardest environment. Just see the plastic body which was not broken during wrestling. Metal of chuck gave tough time to rugged saw during cutting operation. This video increased my faith on Milwaukee M18 tools. I am hobbies wood worker and collected DIY tools required by me. Eventually got mine off with chuck locked on to long end of 3/8 allen wrench, short end in the vise while hauling on the body of the drill. Found the issue to be red locktite on the threads. Not sure if that was factory installed but I was getting really close to cutting it off myself Watching some other vids that does not appear to be the case.

I just found this video after deciding I was gonna try to just cut the chuck off below the jaws but above the screw/thread, so it's good to know I was on the right track & other people have resorted to this too. I've also been looking at what I need to get the new chuck on afterwards, and found that a threadlocker is recommended to stop the screw from loosening with vibration from the drill. I wasn't sure whether to go with the purple (low strength) or blue (medium strength) thread locker, but decided I'd go with purple cause it shouldn't need much to stop it from vibrating loose. The red loctite is the strongest one though, it's intended to not be removable with hand tools. If someone used the red one on the thread in your drill, that would have to be part of what caused you a problem in the first place.

after painfully watching this video till the very end, i must say i actually thought you was going to cut your hand off by the way you was holding your cutting tool with drill and the battery still in that drill lol, health hazard was just screaming at me! literally watching you get that chuck off after 14 and half minutes and considering when you said that "took an hour in half" i must say impressed you managed to take the time to even keep on going after that, but next time considering that drill has been banged up please use a vice lol and also when you take an allen key don't use the long end use the short end as it should fit snug in the screw holding the chuck and then once its like that then you make sure its secure and THEN hit it with a hammer or a mini single hand sledge 2 to 3 hits should do it then once done just take it off it should just unscrew after that, hope that nasty cut on your left hand healed up ok :)

Don’t clamp the chuck down on the Allen key. My Milwaukee brushless drills have usually had #3 Phillips screws holding the chuck. I usually get the screw out with a screwdriver and pipe wrench with the chuck tightened just enough to hold the screwdriver straightish but let it turn. Once the screw is removed I get a hex key socket on my 1/2” breaker bar, tighten that in the jaws of the chuck and pop it off with the breaker bar. Either way get it done and one day learn why your chuck didn’t to want to come off lol. I’m watching this because I wanna see what the internals of that chuck are like

Don’t feel bad, I repair tools at the shipyard I work at, and many of the corded drills always put up a fight getting the drill chucks off when they wear out. I wind up cutting them much like you did, but mostly with Dremel wheels. Probably about Seven out of ten have to be cut, at least with the keyed chucks it seems. Makes me laugh when I see some of these guys make videos with what looks to be a new drill, effortlessly taking the keyless ones off. Let them try it with ones that have had a lot of use and abuse, and they will have to do what you did in many cases………

Looks and sounds like this guy is in Australia. I've never seen a torx screw or star headed screw on any USA Milwaukee drills or tools, they are all Phillips No. 3 or split headed with standard screwdriver slot. It's obvious the engineering is purposely different on OEM Milwaukee tools down under. Milwaukee half inch cordless chucks have been known to freeze up like this. I've never seen any tool maintenance instructions from them advising regular lubrication of the chucks. Seems like common sense but lots of tradesmen never lube their drill chucks, both keyed & keyless.

I think you should change the title of the video to How Not to replace your drill Chuck correctly.

Did I remove it and get the new one working? All I’m showing is how I did it. Never done it before. If you have some constructive criticisms, I’m all for it. Cheers 👍

@AddictedtoTools You did and I was just pulling your leg. After watching that I had to drink two beers... Made me feel the work you was putting in there mate.

Haha love it, we have all had those days when a relatively simple job became an whole heap of trouble, I hate those YT videos where everything runs smooth, makes me feel bad taking ten times as long. I would have used a large lever, put a pipe on it, a larger impact gun would of done it too.

I definitely don’t have smooth run that often. Especially as a lot of this stuff is new to me. Glad I’m not the only one😂

The way things are going, you will hurt yourself and end up with tennis elbow or even worse. Maybe tennis would be a good pastime for you. Leave those tools alone before you get hurt. Some of us make a living using those tools I see on the wall behind you; you should always treat tools with lots of TLC.

Well done with persisting til you got it done. But … I suggest you modify this video with a note, at the very beginning, that you were wrong in tightening the chuck on the Allen key before you removed the internal retaining screw. Without that correction, it taints your whole video.

However if he had managed to tighten the chuck further the screw should have been loose. Granted not the best move but I don't think it made thing worse here. I suspect the chuck was seized and the screw had a threadlocker. Cutting the two flats with a grinding disk might have been faster and added a little heat to break the chuck loose.

The only thing Milwaukee does right in the tool industry is marketing, their tools are shit. Heavy, unbalanced, ergonomic nightmares and the drill chuck are terrible.

So the irony about your channel is that it's called addicted to tools, yet most people that have experience with stubborn bolts/screws know that the best method for removal is leverage and heat. If you would have had a table vise and a pry bar that you could have used adapters to a torque/Allen bit, you could have saved yourself a huge headache and reduced the risk of damaging the drill. Most people strip nuts/screws/bolts because they don't use the proper tools and try to wing it with what they have. Aside from your approach, the video is informative on how to replace a chuck, I would just take a different approach.

Thanks for the feedback mate. I would have definitely used that approach if I had those tools. I could have definitely spent another couple hundred dollars on more tools to then get this chuck off, but would defeat the purpose in trying to change the chuck. I’ve had a lot of advice from others and may do it differently next time. Thanks again.
