Snap on makes a special deep socket for the studs. They also make a magnetic shalllow 12 pt socket for the bolts that hold the gear in place so you dont drop it in the gearcase and turn a 4 hour job into a 3 day ordeal

Deep socket S6200 snap on. Magnetic 10mm MFIMMD10 snap on as well. Just in case you haven’t found it.

My truck was in perfect condition went in for an oil change and I decided to do a valve adjustment, when open , notice the camshaft was all scratched up, mechanic told me to replace it, so I did, after he replaced the camshaft and adjuster led the valve the Truck smokes the whole block at idle and running, and also runs with no power and jerking the lost it goes is 5-10 mph, it’s a 14L Detroit 2006 with egr delete, could it be out of cam?

I need to do this on my 07 Sterling. Im concerned about installing a new one correctly. How would you line up the timing on a new one with no marks on the gear? Or would there be a top dead center mark? Thanks for the video.

So there is a hole in the cam gear housing that lines up with a hole in the cam gear. I’ll look in my book tomorrow, I believe it is 3/16 of an inch. Whatever the size is you can put a drill bit that is the correct size to like the gear up. And there is a hole on the crank you can Insert a pin. As long as you have both of those lined up for TDC 1 as described you will be in time. If you re-watch the video I explained where those holes are. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Okay. So you would line up those hole with a drill bit and then set the assembly in place? Do those caps need rtv or something? I saw that seal on tge 1st cap, is that the only seal needed? I saw some other videos, I think they were on the 12.7, and they had to use some sealant on the corners of the end caps? Are you around SC, I see your hat says Christopher truck? Thanks again.

@@CP-qm9do Correct. The cam is keyed to the gear so it’s orientation will stay the same as long as you get a stock cam. And as long as you pull the cam with the engine in the TDC 1 position. One rotation of the cam is two of the crank. So you have to make sure when you pin the crank the holes on that gear and housing are lined up. Not 180 degrees out. Also I suggest getting an actual Detroit pin. Not a screwdriver lol. And you want to put the Detroit special sealant on the corners of the front and rear cam caps where the front structure and rear structure meet the block. So just on the corners of the caps. And a thin bear around the diamond seal. No need to put any on that small oval seal you saw in the video. And yes I am located in Greenville SC

@@CP-qm9do also there is a little o-ring under the rear main cap you must replace. It gets crusty and sticks to the block. Make sure you clean it well and replace with new.

Is this the same procedure for a 12.7? Don't remember seeing the front cover split like that.

It might be but I know the 14L cam comes assembled with the front cover. The cam usually don’t get sold separate from it
