I remember when I could remove the engine from my 1966 911 in about 15 minutes with nothing more than jackstands, a floor jack, a socket set and a couple of end wrenches. Two engine mount bolts, two transmission mount bolts, one bolt for the shift linkage, one fuel line, about three wires, the big hose from the oil tank, then drop the jack and roll the engine out from under the car. That two liter flat six put out a mighty 130 horsepower, and you got to choose between holes in pistons if you ran hot enough spark plugs to keep from oil fouling, or frequently fouled plugs. I tried both methods.

Watching you pull that beast of a motor, I [somewhat fondly] recall the utter simplicity of the 1300cc motors that preceded it. Disconnect 3 bits of shroud, the gas, throttle cable and electrical leads for the choke and coil, disconnect the heat ducts, jack up the rear end, disconnect the 4 bolts holding the motor to the transaxle and drop it. Of course, it also made 36 HP...

Based on the engine teardowns Eric on the I Do Cars channel does, there's two levels of German. There's the positive kind where it's thoughtfully designed and relatively easy to figure out, like the venerable air-cooled VWs and Porsches. And for everything else (modern VW/Audi, BMW and Mercedes) the engineers are seemingly locked into a contest to make everything as clever as possible with no regards to any kind of practicality.
@tjroelsma Жыл бұрын
Even that can be forgiven in my opinion if they at least build a durable engine by using quality components. Modern BMW engines are being built with as much plastic as humanly possible and plastic that goes through constant heat and stress cycles breaks, you don't have to be an engineer to be able to figure that one out. The VW/Audi group isn't far behind BMW and even "good old" Mercedes, a brand that used to boast that they used at least 6 bolts where others used "only" 4 bolts, has succumbed to the "make it as light and fallible as possible while still getting it through the warranty period" hype that's been driven by ever greedier manufacturers.

Looking forward to seeing the fully tuned Ferrari in due time, I'm sure (Mrs.) Wizard is looking forward to taking it out for a cruise. I'll admit, Holley EFI wasn't the first system that jumped into my mind - just never seen Holley outside the usual American V8's (well, the odd American 6's here and there - but nothing really beyond those applications spring to mind). However, I'm glad it's installed and working. I do hope this will lead to more opportunities to see Holley EFI pop up more often, esp. in less traditional applications. 🙂

The condition of the engine will probably determine if the Porsche will be a runner or a parts car. The body and interior are in decent shape, and even if the engine is trash, the manual gearbox should be worth something, so lot of parts to pick from. If it wasn't a flip car I might have suggested that it be combined with the Tesla from a previous episode and made into an EV but I don't know if the result will have any resale value or not.
