Jared. I have a C4S that failed in exactly the same fashion. It was frustrating as the engine was already a reman fitted by Porsche. Some pretty experienced techs were unable to explain what it was or how it got there. However I seized scavenge pump, stretched chain, lost timing and bent 12 valves. $8000 seems on the low side in my experience.

So the exact issue! I was speaking with THE head guys, and the late model m96 like what’s in this car has some major issues with valve guides and valve seats… head costs are going to be a bit higher than expected but they all are getting addressed and it will be built OEM++

@@TheQuestionableGarage my engine was a .03 build which was the last variant of the 3.6 M96. It had oversize IMS bearing and a host of other updates versus the early ones. It had only 19k miles on it when it failed. Mine failed catastrophically while driving with no warning. I have some nice pics of the foreign object in the scavenge pump. I recognized the drive lug sheared off the same as mine when you were first dismantling pump. Same exactly thing I saw.

Jonathan hit the nail on the head. I was an engineer for kia (manufacturing not design) and they were constantly looking for cost reduction to the tunes of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. It was actually a part of our annual performance review there. I won't say engineers are blameless by any means, but typically most problems can be traced by following the dollars 🤣🤣 Looking forward to see where this goes!

The most important or really the key thing to understand about cracked connecting rods is that you don't lose any material when the machine scores the edge and they crack the rods, if you CUT the rods with ANYTHING you're going to lose even the thinnest of surfaces and they'll NEVER perfectly fit back together no matter WHAT you do to them, you can only REMOVE more, never with a crack. A crack is a perfect break and they'll go back together as naturally as possible. It's a good thing.

I have some experience in rebuilding the very old air-cooled flat-six Porsche engines (the chassis number on my car was 901180, suggesting it was the 180th 911 ever built), and omigod, it's coming up on sixty years ago! It is unbelievable how *simple* that engine was compared to these new water-cooled, IMS equipped monsters. To think that in my naivete I thought I could just take the engine apart and figure it all out as I went... and I did! There's not a chance in the world that would work with these new ones!

On the cylinder heads, you could easily get the usable valves refaced and buy new to replace the bent ones, and then lap everything back in. German engines are great to simply repair as opposed to domestic engines where you often times have to replace everything. This is the only good thing about the typical German "over-engineered" cars. The only other thing I would consider is rod bearing replacement, and perhaps rings, but at 90k may be optional.

When Mr. Piston and Mr. Valve have a fight, Mr. Piston *always* wins. 😛 Fixing it is the right choice. Even if you don't go into it with whomever, you could always sell some vehicles to fund the repairs; presuming that doesn't overly break the ethos of the series. Or, do what most people in this situation would do: open another credit card, promptly melt it, then pay it off when the car sells.
