And we all would have thought it was a simple job! That radiator was really buried. Great video as always Chris.

Watch Chris' videos on the other C4 he had. There's NOTHING "simple" about almost everything on a C4. LOL! Welcome to the "Busted Knuckle Society"! - Scott

So glad you been able to restore that elbow to the radiator! Keep up the good work.

Glad to see you used mechanics gloves to avoid a knuckle buster! Wow, could not believe they sandwiched the oil cooler, the A/C condenser, and the radiator all in such a small space! It’s a wonder anything cools down at all! For a car with the kind of power and torque that Callaway has, I was a little shocked the radiator was so small. I bet the new Dewitt unit will do a much better job. Thanks for the update, Chris!

They really packed those coolers in tight, last mount I replaced the stock radiator on my 85 Z51 car with an all alloy 3 row and an alloy shroud with twin fans. I also deleted the air conditioner condenser as I had never used the air conditioner due to the climate here in the south island of New Zealand (we have Penguins on the beaches) and mounted the trans cooler into the middle of the air flow thru the nose, the trans runs a lot cooler so no more cooked feet and the engine temp stays at 80 degrees C on the open road and the fans only come on if I am stopped in traffic for a long time. well worth the mods. Keep up the good work Chris

Chris, I am enjoying your channel. In the course of my life I restored several corvettes. I currently have a C5 and a C4 as well. The Calloway is going to be one neat Corvette. You won't see many on the road. That is a big project and lots of dollars as well. It will be great when you get it complete. Thanks for what you do. God bless. Jerry

That was quite a job removing those bolts, many don't realize how difficult working in tight places can be.
@tonysteppan84953 жыл бұрын
But wait there's more fun ahead ! putting them back in ! All part of the job, I like that Chris is taking one step at a time and not trying Blow through everything. I hope the new radiator is a good fit with the cover being as tight as it is? Seeing the water pump removed will be interesting. A glimpse into the openings on the block will also be interesting with the bore scope. That upper radiator elbow was kinda crusty, but cleaned up nice.. I was looking for Black paint for my 1990 vett . That Eastwood paint looks great. Not like the run of the mill high heat satin black.
@dukeman75953 жыл бұрын
@@tonysteppan8495 Very crusty indeed, I wonder if an acid flush is in order if the block and Head water inlets are fouled? Regarding those tight places, man, they are a pill to work on. I dread working on these hard to get places, matter of fact I'm thinking of deleting my emissions pump to free up space, however, I have been told this could cause problems, will have to research more.
@tonysteppan84953 жыл бұрын
@@dukeman7595 Not having to deal with emissions on my C4 yet. From reading the GM manual it seems a lot is tied in to the ECM, fuel management and so on. If you find away around all that without messing up engine performance that would be cool. I'm sure that where's there's a will there's a way. I'm sure somebody out there has gone down that road since the 90's.GOOD LUCK

been there done that for leaves cleaning purpose, from stock, the radiator "shroud", that's the way they call it, doesn't come with the cut out for easy removal where the trans oil cooler lines go into the plastic tank. So it's a pretty usual mod, when you arrive at that point, get the piece cutaway for easy removal the next time you have to mess with the radiator and condenser. Definitely, a pain in the @ss.If I was the engineering guys at GM, probably I would have thought about a radiator shroud top part bolted all around to ease the removal from the top leaving the lower part somehow attached...the Callaway design is even more complicated by the engine oil cooler stuff, definitely a tedious job even the second time you do it...great content as always Chris you rock! things are going serious here...hope you could come in touch with some good sponsors, you totally deserve it...

I cut a hole in the radiator cover when I put on a CAI on my ‘92 back in ‘99. I bought a new one to replace it when I went back to the stock filter and realized the work to put it on. Needless to say the new cover is still in my attic.

This is an especially interesting project, almost like archeology and advanced problem solving. It is intriguing how Calloway made things fit and work. Your project is the polar opposite of the simplicity of the flathead model A hot rods that are my favorites. You are doing things slowly and thoughtfully, when done you should keep this benchmark car. After this project you need an inexpensive change of pace. I would like to watch you do a C4 or a C5 with a body that is too far gone to economically repair, get out the sawzall and do a thoughtful Cart conversion. Thank you for sharing.

this car would not be getting restored if you we’re not doing it yourself, it would be prohibitively expensive. Did you look into the rad itself to see if it was all cruded up? Does the engine turn over? IE: a breaker bar on the crank pulley. Just to check the the pistons are not seized.

I would have thought the B2k option would have given you the "heavy duty cooling" (aka: a trans cooler built into the radiator) but I guess since it's a manual transmission, it wouldn't need it?

Hello Chris, I noticed that it has not the extra fan (B4P option). What does the sticker with all the RPO codes say?
@mycorvettelife3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, it was not optioned with the the HD fan.
@chumpvette22913 жыл бұрын
B4P went away in the 90 model year, as the fan assembly included to fans on the backside. Not the Earlier version of 1 fan on the back and the B4P option in the front of the assembly.

That is a zr1 oil cooler except flipped 180 a zr1 feeds out to the passenger side…. It holds 3 quarts….., while you can weld on a drain and a fitting so it can be refilled without pulling a fuse and spinning the engine to fill cooler
@chumpvette22913 жыл бұрын
The oil cooler is not a Callaway part. It is an Chevrolet part that was used in the ZR-1. The relays you were pointing out are the fan relays, not headlights. Keep up the good work.

It was added by Callaway since this was not a ZR1 when it left Bowling Green.

Hard to judge what one person perceives as hard, but as long as it stops normal and there is no vibration, it's probably normal.
