That's not even the issue. He was criticized because he went to Mexico while there was a power emergency in Texas due to the storms. His job is to represent Texas at the federal level, which has nothing to do with what was going on at the time. Had he been the mayor of Texas going to Mexico at that time, there would have been an issue. People need to learn how their government works. As for "colleagues from other states...working their butts off raising funds for relief efforts..." seriously? Again, that's not how the government works. Any fundraising was going to re-election coffers. They use taxpayer money for relief efforts and if the senate wasn't in session, then he could have been preparing or reviewing documents, which he can do in Mexico or even on the plane ride there. The optics aren't great, but if people understood how the system worked, they would see that it wasn't that big of a deal, either.

He can do the same thing AOC and Beta O'Rourke did, raise money to help with supplies and distribute them to needy people. Even if he couldn't do anything, the captain should go down with the boat--Cruz's bad policies contributed to the crisis, so he should have stayed and suffered like everyone else. Then maybe the next time he'd care more about his constituents instead of his favored corporations.

As a Texan, I don't have a problem with Cruz going to Mexico during the ice storm for a few reasons. 1) His trip had been planned for months. He wasn't doing it to escape. I wouldn't be upset with anyone for not cancelling a vacation because their neighbor's pipes burst. 2) He is a FEDERAL politician, not a STATE politician. He has absolutely nothing to do with setting state policy. Now if my representative in the state house had bailed, or if the governor had left, then I'd be upset.
