Ren is probably how most would act in a scenario of being transported to a world that looked like a video game. Even though, he's well-intentioned, he's still very self-centered and tries to be the cool main character, and many believe their Player Character to be.

Out of the three. He's the only one who has anything close to a second dimension. He's stubborn, prideful and even arrogant at times. BUT out of all three, he's the only one who even wanted to give Naofumi a chance to explain his position and that he seemed genuinely remorseful of his actions (or lack thereof) unlike the other two who seem to, for the most case auto-pilot on "I'm a thoughtless twat" mode. That being said, he also went along with BS that Naofumi went through without so far as talking to the man himself. The only other negative thing I can really say, is that the writer kind of, in both the anime AND the LN, shrugged off any growth after the 'church arc' and regardless of what was shown, went back, with the other heroes, to their one dimensional selves. I know that later they begin to develop, but I feel that such hints at development should be nurtured and allowed to grow slowly, not just tucked away and then pulled out whenever it's convenient for the plot or our MC.

Thank you, that is my problem with the writing. All of the characters should be developing, not just the ones on screen. Them being double crossed by the Pope at the very least should have lead to a lot of talks. If not between the heroes themselves, which would be the obvious tactic as they were forced to fight together and thus couldn't fall back on their obvious bad habbits and even then that almost wasn't enough even with how strong Shield Hero was. But if they couldn't manage that, then at the very least there should have been talks with The Queen and the heroes. Maybe have her give some insight into how she sees them and maybe her and Naofumi talk about ways of getting them stronger. All in all, it seems like there were lots of ways they could have been advanced as characters, but they were stagnant for a long time and then suddenly developments because the plot demands it.

I remember an argument I had with someone who compared Naofumi to Kirito. Naofumi is the anti Isekai lead, and Ren is an allusion to Kirito. Naofumi entered the new world by reading a book instead of his life ending in tragedy or playing a VR game. Ren literally mentions he played a VR MMO similar to their world. Ren is basically the closest to a Kirito clone in Shield Hero.

the interesting thing is despite how much he trains he is surprisingly weak. where as kirito overlevled himself and became OP from the start. I know part of it has to do with his fighting style. but regardless he should be stronger than itsuki and motoyasu at the very least. enough that glass shouldn't be able to 1 shot him.

@@psionx1 his weakness is meant to showcase how wrong he is for choosing to act that way. It’s almost a blatant callout to kirito as a character who, let’s be honest should never have become strong. An mmo doesn’t allow for what kirito became and in real life people like him suck and never progress. But the two characters were understandably written with different mindsets so there’s that. Kirito is a wish fulfillment self insert protagonist and ren is a narrative jobber to make naofumi look good until his character development kicks in.

I feel that Ren can possibly work with Naofumi if he wasn't so stubborn. To me Ren is one of those people that would have to learn the hard way that this new world is not like the games he's played in the past and his actions have consequence that affect the people around him. I like how you compared Ren to Kirito in a sense that both of them have that typical isekai protagonist character design. (possible spoiler) I also find it interesting that the Bow, Sword, and Spear hero were isekaied via reincarnation while Naofumi was just summoned there. Maybe the reason why they won't work with Naofumi is because they are afraid to put their live on the line so they treat the new world like a game to forget their tragic ending.

Ren is the hero who I am the most excited for to reach the epiphany that even if this is a game, the lives of the NPCs are as valid as the "real life" simulation we could theoretically all be in. I bring this argument up when talking about literature we read in school like Wuthering Heights. The lives documented, even if they are fictional, have value as they move our emotions. To treat every story with the same respect gives our existence so much more colour than to consistently sort out what should or shouldn't have any emotional investment.

I think it's telling that Naofumi chose Ren to look into the Church's actions over the others, even with his distrusting nature. Still, pretty much anyone who wasn't a total prat would make for better heroes than the three. I like the Shield hero content by the way :)

I feel like Ren is the one redeemable character among the three other so-called heroes. The spear-hero is just a hormone-guided egomaniac and easily manipulated through his base urges. The bow-hero appears to be a tyrant at heart only pretending to be a good person. But Ren appears to me like he really wants to do good and help people, but is just bad at it due to an inferiority complex or something similar that he hides behind the cool-guy, longer facade as well as imaturity. If he managed to open up to others, I think he could become a true hero, unlike the spear and bow.

He also gets betrayed by Bitch before Naofumi manages to bring him around with the help of Eclair.

The Shield Hero's way of being a hero is to defend others. The Spear Hero's way of being a hero is to trust their companion. The Bow Hero's way of being a hero is justice. It wasn't said what the sword hero's is except that "he has hidden strenght". I have two hypoteses. First is that he's inspiring, although we don't really see it in Ren, second, however, is responsability, which we do see Ren do. He was shocked when he learned that not disposing of the dragon cause a plague and just started to walk to deal with it. Also, when Naofumi was away for an arc, he collapse of exhaustion from the responsability he felt for managing the villlage. (And the Hunting Tool Hero, I have an inkling it's about cooperation.)

I love the anime. I started watching it when anime news network and other similar websites effectively wanted this show cancelled, calling it misogynistic or some other thing and I started watching it out of spite for them. The Me-Too movement was still going strong but was now so overboard that anything that had people screaming "cancel" had me go "no". I love the fact that it is made clear that Ren, Itsuki and Motayasu all think the world is a game and they treat it as such. The see the people as NPCs and disasters as in-game events. Even more so during the 4 Heroes Council when they started telling Naofumi about everything the weapons can do, such as crafting or fast travel. They have no reason to think it's not a game when the weapons go out of their way to make all the game mechanics they know reality, but because they don't learn from each other and are too proud, they limit how much they can strengthen their weapons whereas Naofumi takes everything they said and applies it, adding on to the things he already does which are actually far more effective than what they do because he's so much stronger than them, and he gets stronger even more by default. I'm looking forward to seeing them get hit by the reality stick as hard as possible.

I actually started disliking much of the fandom for much of the same reason you like the series. The first episode didn't really turn it off and I just rolled my eyes at the idiots trying to get the show cancelled. When I skipped ahead to the source material and found moments, I should have felt catharsis I instead just felt tired, I realized this wasn't really the series for me. My problem is that, with maybe 5 exceptions like Natalie, most of the fans call me a SJW when I say I don't like the series which just makes me furious I'm being lumped with those idiots. No, it wasn't the first episode that turned me off, in fact I liked it more than I liked the first 50 seconds of the third episode! As you pointed out the weapons go out of their way to make the world seem like a game, yet some people relish the moment things go wrong because they bought into that very reasonable assumption. There are other reasons to not like the trio, even Ren, but some people use this is their sticking point.

@@alex_zetsu Besides, I don't like this show because I was sticking it to cancel culture or whatever, that's why I heard about it and decided to check it out. I like it because I love the characters and the story, and the direction that it is going. I can get annoyed with or hate the other heroes while at the same time fully understand where they are coming from. I can get angry at Vitch/Zlut (changed letters) because of her horrible actions while cheering later on over a feeling of justice being served. I feel there's pay-off for every moment of anger and/or frustration the show makes me feel I can feel confident that what goes around comes around. But as I said in my previous comment, if you don't like this show then that is just fine. Enjoy what you want to enjoy.

In Ren's defence, animals and monsters die all the time and their corpses are just eaten by scavengers and rot. A dead monster causing trouble in a village a few kilometres away never comes up again in Shield Devil and is almost unheard off in other stories. The only "corpse disposal" that ever comes up is Filo eating it. So the other two heroes were maybe acting recklessly by just doing quests, but Ren was IMO just put into this situation by the writer, who is clearly a Shield Devil apologist and makes the three Heroes look bad and incompetent just to make Shield Devil look better.

I cannot believe they skipped the 'everyone throws Ren in the ocean' scene. Perhaps it's because the anime is trying it's best to make Naofumi look nice, but then at that one scene with Rishia at the end of the second season they had Naofumi be so mean to her when he was actually impressed by her at that moment in the light novels. I really hope they don't fuck up the future seasons

Think of it like this. Let's say the other three heroes are drug addicts that believe they have their addictions under control and can quit at any time. But the people around them can clearly tell that there is a major problem but can't get through to them. So it takes something horrible happening to the drug addicts that make them realize that they need help and to change. It's a slow process but they do get better with time. The other three heroes will get their change. Just give it time and stick with it. :)

I just wonder if they are going to rush his arc like they seem to be doing with the Spirit Turtle? I will say I read the original web novel and not the light novel. So I'm not completely sure of what changed between the two versions. It's still a shame we didn't get to see the training arc and the duel between Eclair and Ren.

I'm up to volume 19 and that has never been mentioned about Ren's world so far - only that it has slightly more advanced technology. Itsuki's world is probably the stranger one... I'd heard the WWII thing mentioned before though, so maybe it is mentioned later or was in the WN but not the LN (apparently they're very different).

its possible that the people that get isekaied without traveling thru a portal or summoned to another world may have died either peacefully without knowing/reliazing it or being unable to accept how they died. isekai no isobi is an anime that had a spirit diety connect 2 worlds together thru a portal within a door. resturant to another world is similar to isekai no isobi. by the grace of the gods, wiseman's grandchild, 8th son are you kidding me, & reincarnated as a slime have to do with main character dieing & being reborn in another world. pokemon, digimon, yugioh, isekai cheat pharmacist, banished from the hero's party, saint's magical power is omnipotent, isekai cheat magician, world of leadale, 7 deadly sins anime, record of grancrest wars, granblue fantasy,aico incarnation, kong king of the apes, kabanari iron fortress, cagaster insect cage, dr. stone, log horizon, kamigami no asobi, shaman king, how a realist hero rebuilt the kingdom, huntik seekers & secrets, saint seiya & the zodiac knights, cyborg 009, misfit of demon academy, castlevania, food wars, goblin slayer, tears to tiara, infinite dendogram, magi nation arifureta, fairy tale anime are a small portion of the other interesting anime that have various explanations about their stories. sorry if i misspell any anime titles. have managed to watch most of these animes & possible some clips of others. if you search youtube for fantasy, action, adventure, horror, supernatural, zombie, cartoons of 1960's/1970's/1980's/1990's/2000's/2010's/2020's, & any other general genres then you will likely find plenty of other anime of interest.

When you say it's finished, do you mean anime or novel? If you haven't read the novels, I personally think the best place to start reading from is the first orstread encounter. And then finish the side stories and prequels. From there, Re:Zero would be a good choice if you haven't. Slime reincarnation is another good one, nothing like a manga pooping technique for abilities.

It seems to me that all three asshole heroes died from a specific deadly sin. Ren - Pride Itsuki - Envy Motoyasu - Lust It all stems from their behavior before and after they were Iseki'd and with each of them you see those traits come out when interacting with their respective parties. Noafumi was the only one who didn't die and was pure hearted from the beginning.

Yeah, I don't think their deaths really tie in with sins (except maybe Motoyasu) - the sins thing does come up in the story but Ren isn't associated with pride anyway and Itsuki isn't associated with envy anyway. Their deaths I think just show a bit about their personalities, Motoyasu dies because he can't seem to spot a crazy woman until it's too late, Ren died doing something heroic (but the fact remains he still died), and Itsuki died because he was thinking about his game and not paying attention to the real world around him...

Thinking about it more. Ren does act like a kirito. And that's bad looks. He really will need a reality check to get serious. I assume getting de limbed might do the trick
