Certi momenti non si possono dimenticare, come quella sera in piazza a Orta con uno dei tanti miti della musica che volli sul lago per i programmi di "Lungaestate". Renè Aubry, Suzanne Ciani, Raffaella De Vita, Teresa De Sio e molti altri. Oggi per Orta si fa solo poco- e- male, niente o quasi. Improvvisazione lasciata al caso senza una commissione (come si prometteva in campagna elettorale) che scelga, valuti e decida. Tutto è lasciato al caso e non certo alla conoscenza o bravura della giunta. Che tristezza. Ancora due anni d'attesa perché questa giunta se ne vada. Intanto, come non dimenticare quella sera di trent'anni fa nella 'piazza salotto' di Orta. Io, giovane assessore al turismo, contro tutti e contro anche il mio sindaco di allora che temeva il parroco e i notabili, decisi che Mingus avrebbe suonato. E fu un trionfo. E sempre in quegli anni da non dimenticare non può passare inosservato il periodo in cui alla Regione c'era tale Ettore Racchelli cui molti, oggi, non riconoscono il vero ruolo ricoperto. Fu lui e la sua giunta a portare in Piemonte la grande musica internazionale supportando un Distretto dei Laghi che aveva linfa per funzionare egregiamente: Lagomaggiore Jazz fu una straordinaria avventura che vide arrivare in molti comuni (Orta compresa) i grandi come Ray Charles, Michel Petrucciani, Nicola Arigliano, Dizzi Gillespy, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Charlie Parker e altri ancora. Oggi questo non si fa più: come per Orta, anche a Torino si pensa ad altro.E la promozione dei luoghi è lasciata al caso. Che tristezza. Erano gli anni in cui, ricordo con soddisfazione, lanciai la prima Lunganotte italiana, invitando i direttori e gli inviati di molti giornali italiani ad assistere all'intitolazione (per una notte, ma loro non lo seppero fino all'arrivo) di vie e piazze alle testate nazionali. Grande Mingus, grande Lunganotte che raccolse consensi e proteste per il superaffollamento e, di conseguenza, anche qualche schiamazzo di troppo.
