Crazy how he can make an American (me) nostalgic for a place I've never been. A master storyteller and lyricist

I like how Ren has made a lot of people who would never had listened to any kind of hip hop or rap are now finding themselves liking what they thought they never would 🤔😊

Good comment my friend I am a 67 year old great grandad born on pink Floyd and would never have thought I would love music like this but I think it's amazing what he does love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍 🌟😀😀 amazing 👍

@@jukeboxdave6026 Yeah, true talent just cuts through the crap and cannot be ignored for very long. Ren is at the forefront of this Ren-aissance revolution of actual real talent. He gives me hope that the future of music is not going to stay monotonous and mundane making the youth have mushy brains 🎶😊

I know that as a fan of Old Skool Hip Hop, I stayed away from what it became at a certain point. That's not because I'm an old f*ck now ( I am) but I'm still very involved in the indie music scene. I think too much current Hip Hop is unoriginal (unlike in its earlier days). IMO almost all forms of popular music haven't progressed in the last 20 years. That's a shame. I'm ready to give Hip Hop a new chance if more artists start using more clever wordplay, better rhymes, better bars, and showing skills with switch-ups. I urge people to have a look at Ren's song "What You Want. " It's sort of a love letter to Old Skool Hip Hop and a fun tribute to The Beastie Boys. If you think you could never possibly love rap, this might change your mind. BTW, stick around the end. If that doesn't convince you, go back to 1982's "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. It shows how many raps at that time were about social and community responsibility- when they weren't about celebration and pure joy.

It captures modern Britain very well. Makes me smile every listen and shows how versatile he is. Good reaction (as always)

The bass player from The Verve called him the morning the song dropped. He talked about it either on his channel here or on his Instagram. He was so psyched. You could hear his excitement in every syllable he spoke. I love everything happening for @Ren right now. He seems like a very humble and deserving guy. He's doing his thing his way and if you like it, all he asks is that you share it. It's refreshing. Particularly today, after watching the ostentatious exhibitionism that was the Grammys last night.

I gave up watching the Grammys a long time ago, even though I know other people find it entertaining. They're just like the Oscars, where lobbying by the music biz dictates who and what should be nominated. Then again, almost all mainstream music is based on money and influence nowadays. We're not liable to hear anything that doesn't make money, and the biz has shaped what people are willing to accept. I hope Ren manages to remain on the path of an independent artist. I shudder to think what Sony would have done with him if they hadn't dropped him. He's said that he wouldn't be writing the music he's been doing for a few years if he was on a major label. I'm a fierce supporter of indie music. It's the indie, DIY ethic that Ren's followed, working from the ground up, that has delivered his growing success. The more emerging 'mainstream "artists follow this example, the better the music we hear will become. I suspect Ren is a game-changer in how music how should be delivered, Its content, lyricism, and songwriting ability. He's set a pretty high bar.

@Dennis R. White I watched with the sound off and my headphones on because I was interested in seeing the ridiculous spectacle it was. I did unmute when Bonnie Raitt won the award for song of the year. I've always loved Bonnie and that is a beautiful, heart-wrenching song I didn't believe would win, so when it did, I watched, did a happy dance, clapped, cried a bit, re-muted, and put my headphones back on. I don't like a lot that has come with the modern world. God I'm old! One thing I do appreciate is that it is so much easier to disseminate independent music to a wider audience than it ever has been. Back when we were all trying to get "discovered " the only way to get attention was to huff it up and down the coast playing shows everywhere, making tapes, or pressing your own CDs and t-shirts to sell. It could get too expensive with very little return. Without someone behind you footing the bill, you could burn out quickly. It's great to see folks like Ren able to use the inter webs to his advantage, reaching a huge audience in the space of a month (in the case of Hi Ren). I hope he continues to pave his own way without any big machine behind him.

I live in the US but spent many years living in Britain and identify with it quite a lot. I return t for at least a month every two years and keep up with what's going on there on a daily basis. Bittersweet Symphony is an iconic song in the UK. Ren's retake should be just as iconic. It's a great summation of Britain at this very moment and shows the love that even the most-dissatisfied citizens have for their home even in hard times. The first thing I thought about seeing this video is that Ren walks down a sidewalk like Richard Ashcroft, the lead singer of the Verve, does in their video. Instead of Ashcroft's character showing detachment from others and knocking into people, Ren openly celebrates people. The original lyrics to Bittersweet Symphony are quite depressing. Ren's are hopeful.

It’s been 30yrs years since I moved from Oz to Britain for 6yrs yet when watching Ren, he makes me ‘homesick’. Gotta check out Chalk Outlines. Just one of his brilliantly crafted collaborations with Chinchilla. Their harmonic chemistry is so on point. Her voice is beautiful

"The Hunger" is a fun one, shows his crazy rap skills. Also Money Game 1&2 are really good talking about the government and other things in society failing us. But I would check out some his street performances where he shows off his singing and skills on instruments.

He uses "Bittersweet" as the basis for the lyrics, jumping from negatives to positives continually, a story of a night out and the walk home in the morning with his usual packed to the brim social commenting. A very "British" track with a lot of relatable terms and ideas that are a bit hard to grasp if your not from these rainy/sunny shores ;) The original verve lyrics were very similar in there message. On the face an anthem like upbeat track but leaves you with great imagery and needing to listen again. Ren must be a nightmare to react to.......he packs a lot into his tracks LOL

You never know what expect with Ren. Fully agree! Again a great take on the song by you. Here are my suggestions: If you are up for an upbeat rap with message, go to 'Power', or - less message but fun 'What you want'. If you are ready for something beautifully sung but darker, go to 'Chalk outlines'. If you want message, sung, but also upbeat, go to 'Humble', and I forgot if you did Sickboi yet, the follow on from Hi Ren that takes us to the beginning of the story.

I love the complete opposite take to the original, Ren is at home in the city, whereas Richard Ashcroft, was completely at odds with it in the original vid.

Nice work with your reaction. Ren's got a lot of great material. He's got a fantastic variety whether solo, with Sam Tompkins or with his bands Trick the Fox and the Big Push. I don't think you'll find anything that isn't at least very good.
