Fred again is a British EDM artist. Fred was Ren’s favorite artist last year and actually just won a Grammy. Ren took 5 different Fred again songs and pieced them together seamlessly in this acoustic mashup. He poured so much emotion into the performance, especially at the end. His friend Josh Stiles filmed the video and did a great job! Ren was very involved in setting up the angles and the flow of the camera work. Ren has so much attention to detail. The setting was meaningful - this is Ren’s apartment in Calgary where he’s been getting treatment for over a year. So it makes the “I’ve been lost for so long, but I’m really trying” lines even more impactful as he glances out at the Calgary skyline so far from home. Yesterday Ren released a video on his Patreon showing how he did the mixing. He does all of his own post production work. The vocals were left relatively raw intentionally. As you pointed out, it adds so much to the performance. Ren will be releasing a lot of new music this year! I’m excited

Something that stood out to me in that glance over his shoulder is how it echoed some of his performances with The Big Push on the roof of his apartment in Brighton. I don't know. It's hard to put into words, but it created even more distance for me, a greater sense of being lost.

It really makes me miss vinyl records -- the crackle and other noises are unique to vinyl -- you can't smooth it out in post, because "post" IS imperfect. Physical is different than digital, and live is different from auto-tuned. Great reaction. More Ren, please.

I totally agree with you - the mere concept of "perfect" art is oxymoron for me. A machine can make a perfect object, but art is subjective, open for interpretation. An actor will never be able to be the same in a play or a musician to hit the same note twice and that's the beauty of it. Ren's live performances are my favorite! Great reaction, thank you!

Glad to see you back. Love your analysis. Just watched the BTS on this ! Great to see the process. Ren added no guitar or voice to whst he recorded. He did use several EQ programs and reverb programs to add depth or "sparkle" yo areas. I loved how he took off reverb on voice to create intimacy and then added it to create ambience. I believe this was experts from 5 Fred Again songs with Fred's lyrics. Ren said the "Ive been lost " lyrics made him cry during the concert he attended because it perfectly described the last 10+ years of his life. He sure did a great job turning edm into an emotional Rollercoaster. I love this song. Over and over again❤😂❤

The interesting thing is that Ren is absolutely a perfectionist and wants every detail exactly right. Just think about how many takes he will take to get a live one shot video right (I think his record was 183 for Money Game part 1 😅). However, Ren understands that perfection can mean raw and vulnerable because that is what makes it resonate so strongly with other people and makes it so valuable as art. Perfectly imperfect. Also just obvious from these live recordings that he refined his art on the street busking. Ren makes music for people. And who else can take EDM tracks and mash them up into such an emotional performance? Ren is special.

Ren said he changed up the beat intentionally in that one spot. He doesn’t seem to do anything by accident, and is extremely diligent in the sound mixing of his songs, which are usually done by him alone.

"Fred again" is a EDM artist and this song is a mashup of 6 different songs of Fred again. There exists a Tiny Desk concert of Fred again. I recommend having a listen. It is great and it puts into perspective how much Ren has adapted those songs to fit for a classic guitar. It is brilliant 😂 Glad to have you back 😊

Nice reaction, pretty accurate and yea I feel the same as previous comments Ren feeling a little melancholy on his recovery journey. Missing his mates and his Mom. I imagine so much support with his fans that he would never accept.He projects so much emotion makes everyone feel like so much more then just a fan ! Hey there, LOVED this reaction, even though our musical tastes don't always align, when they do, I really enjoy your reactions. Not to gush, but I think there's often more negativity in the comment sections than positive, so I like to balance it out when I can...... There are very few reactors, I mean I can maybe count them on one hand, that I never fast forward through their commentary/pauses, and you are definitely one of them. Your ability to describe the intricacies of a performance, and point out the human nature, and subtle nuances that make an artist or their ability special or noteworthy are astounding, it's like having an itch you can't scratch, then hearing you're assessment is like being handed the worlds best back scratcher...lol, it's truly a gift that most don't possess. Oh yeah, I'm pretty good at reading people (27yrs as a paramedic) and have seen enough of your reactions I'm pretty confident with two suggestions for Ren songs, whether you react to them or listen on your own, I think you will really enjoy them..... "Humble" - Ren featuring Eden Nash (female singer w/ amazing Island/calypso sounding voice), there's only one video, lyric video, the thumbnail has pink background. "Bongo Bong" (Manu Chao cover) - The Big Push (sans the drummer) This is the band Ren is in, live performance on a rooftop, great harmonizing, a verse in French, and a ukulele is involved, what's not to love!!? Only one video for it, thumbnail shows Ren holding a guitar. Ok, enough of my rambling, too much coffee too early, take care! ✌💚

This song is an amalgamation of around 4 or 5 different songs from one of Ren's favourite artists called Fred Again. He is an EDM DJ and when Ren went to one of his concerts recently, he suddenly just broke down in the middle of the dancefloor bc he just resonated with the lyrics so much.
