Try to imagine the amount of pain this dude was in. 19-26. Bed ridden, body and mind in absolute anguish for 7 years and no way out. Then think back to when he said he carved a hole in his chest just so he could feel. If you can’t go there in your mind then you can’t understand where he’s coming from. I don’t think he’s trying to glamorize it, he’s just being truthful about what happened and give a glimpse into why he did it. This song is about hope and not giving up. He came close more than once to giving up but he came out the other side and feels like it’s his duty to relate to people who may be experiencing a similar situation currently and give them hope to keep carrying on. This song was written for those people.

Great reaction KSO! Ren is currently living in Calgary, Canada while he still receives treatment from the residual brain damage that the Lyme disease caused along with some other autoimmune issues. One of them is called MCAS (Mass Cell Activation Syndrome), it's an autoimmune response that means he is currently allergic to like 95% of foods and sometimes chemicals, and can only eat like a low histamine diet. He experienced anaphylactic shock once so he has to be very careful about what he puts in his body. So he's basically been eating the same thing every day for years. Lyme disease untreated can wreak absolute havoc on your body. It buries itself in the body causes all kinds of damage, potentially organ damage, damage to the mitochondria in your brain, hallucinations, heart problems, effects your joints so you're in constant pain and MANY other symptoms. It's extremely important that it's diagnosed as soon as possible, if you catch it quick you just need to take a two week course of antibiotics and you'll normally make a full recovery, but almost 8 years misdiagnosed it's extremely hard to completely recover from that. It's been 13 years now, the stem cell transplant gave him some lease of life back at 26 but he still experiences a lot of the symptoms to this day, this is why he is still in treatment. The UK has very little understanding of Lyme disease and so it's not normally checked out at all. In Ren's case he had to go abroad and find an infectious disease specialist who diagnosed him properly. I think with self harm, specifically in Ren's case, he had no control over the absolute hell his body was putting him through, the way it was going there was no way out of his situation. There's something to be said about personally having control over what's causing you pain, instead of experiencing pain you have no control over. He was numb to everything. When people feel that numb and that depressed, sometimes it feels like dying with your eyes open, you'll do anything to check you're actually still alive. His 8 chapters goes into everything that happened from the first day he became sick, up until the stem cell transplant where he got some lease of life back. It's very informative but it's an incredibly tough listen, as it will go into detail about certain things you may not want to hear about, but if you want to hear his story in its entirety, you'll find out a lot about what happened to him. I hope this helps. Anyway, I look forward to the stream later tonight!

Hurting yourself usually comes from such a psychological pain, that hurting yourself physically feels relieving. -As physical pain takes your attention to it - It's an evolutionary thing, it has to do so in order for us to survive. So that means the attention shifts away from the psychological pain. It also gives a boost of energy (endorphines) to do what's needed to save yourself. And sometimes people get addicted to that. "Pain releases endorphins in the body. Endorphins are hormones and neurotransmitters produced by the body that reduce feelings of pain and increase feelings of well-being."

For me this is a song of acceptance. Ren has (mostly) come to peace with his past. He's looking forward now and seeing a future which he thought was lost. A lot of the music Ren put out in the last year was actually written "during". We are now getting the "after" music. Ren is becoming a bright light, but his music is getting better even when it isn't about his health or his struggle so I can't wait for whatever comes next.

As a therapist in training I know there are a lot of reasons why people partake in self harm. So many do self harm for many reasons, but to put in perspective of controlling your pain … is it also to focus your pain on something else other than what you’re feeling. Especially if you suffer from anxiety with pannic attacks and depression, the feelings are very confusing. The whole body and chest hurts without one part actually hurting and it is hard to breathe although you can’t stop hyperventilating. So if someone is hurting so much physically and mentally, and it is happening all over your body, self hard provides that sense of control as well as focus. Especially if one is cutting while depressed, when they cut, they can at least feel a different pain than what they have been feeling, visualize it and pin point it on their own terms. Also if something worst comes from that, some can tend to think at least this pain, or decision was mine… and I had control. At times it also is a cry for help or attention. Which I would always hate when people would say “ oh they’re just doing that for attention “ ….. because even if they are, the person clearly is wanting someone to notice that they are hurting, and care about their pain .

Rain has been up in Canada for over a year getting treatment for the Lyme disease and the Damage that it's done. He suffered brain damage and nerve damage and is only about five foods that he can eat without getting like horribly sick. But Ren said in July he's finished with his treatment up in Canada and then he's going to go back to the UK for about a month to play some shows, hang out with family and friends and then after that he is moving to the United States. He said he wants to live on the east coast somewhere, either Connecticut New Jersey or New York because he knows this is where he has his best chance to expand music career and collaborations to make a bigger name for himself. And he'll only be 2 hours away from his doctors up in Canada if he needs them!

Thank you KSO… I feel that you understood pain just in a different circumstance but nonetheless you understand what it’s like being held captive and unable to escape your fate.. sadly Ren really had no choice that this happened to him. First off you are a human and when it all comes down to it you and we understand that this is not your everyday occurrence… what I am most proud of you is we have gotten to see a glimpse of the KSO that was underneath… thank you… when it is all said and done I appreciate you, I appreciate Ren and so glad to have you as a fellow human.. 🫶🏻

As far as self harm goes, it's more because you get to the point that you feel like you're not even real. And something about cutting and seeing the blood, brings you back to reality. Because you've gotten to the point that you can't even feel real. It's not healthy, obviously, but it's kind of like being stuck between ending it all, and just hurting yourself, so you do something small, that will hurt you without ending you. Because you don't really want to end. I've got a line of scars from my wrist to my shoulder on my left arm. I haven't done it in over a decade, but like Ren said, "the struggle was real." Shout out for mental health awareness.

That "Raw Thoughts" line was an ode to Chris Webby's Raw Thoughts - patiently waiting for their Collab - video was filmed in April in NY..... And waiting on the Ren and Prof collab that has been confirmed by both artists as well but I don't know if there will be a video and if there is a video if it's been filmed. Ren only mentioned the filming of the video with Webby and Prof has said he got Ren's verse and it was insane and that Ren said he had to tweak it a little bit and it's been almost 2 months since we heard from Prof about it so fingers crossed! I am dying to hear Ren collab with both of these rappers.

To answer your question about self harm, Ren goes into the circumstance behind his incident in his Chapters series. I won't try to paraphrase it here as I don't remember word for word. I will say that there are usually many different reasons someone might do that. Some have such an overwhelming numb feeling that they want to feel anything, even physical pain. Others, as you said, see it as the one thing they can control. Some feel like they deserve to be punished for some reason. There are so many emotions that drive that act. I appreciate your willingness to gain a better understanding. I know you have a specific stance on self harm and other more extreme things. If you've never felt it, you will never fully understand. I envy that as I would never wish that feeling on anyone. Depending on the severity of your compulsion, everyday can be a struggle for survival. But you are trying to understand better and I feel that is an important evolution in your frame of mind. I would give you the KSO award for that.

KSO listen to Fibro Mamadee Mercedes. I had my 1st symptoms of autoimmune challenges at the age of 4. The Drs had no clue how complicated my case would become. Gaslighted LT & RT… Labeled a hypochondriac, whiny, sickly, weak, lacking work ethic, etc… I worked for 32 years with multiple disabilities. I busted my ass for my family & my health deteriorated to the point that I was prescribed 2 nerve pain meds, 4 “narx”, 2 muscle relaxers, plus up to 8 enzyme pills a day to digest food. When you have to take 29 pills a day, and still barely functioning you start to lose yourself & live in a purgatory of pain. We went through struggles with my daughter for 14 years. Every diagnosis hitting slightly outside of the truth. So many treatments & terror & tears came from her multiple misdiagnosis. It wasn’t until I saw REN’s commentary on the bottom at the end that there were a few things I’d never heard of. My daughter had PANDAS… never properly diagnosed. She took her own life last July & this dropped the day she would have graduated from high school.

That's... a workable comparison. Yeah, punching a locker is not unlike cutting yourself. Both of those are ways of distracting yourself temporarily from what you are feeling. Or, alternatively, just... giving into anger or pain or despair. Sometimes it's about controlling your feelings. Sometimes it's losing control. Yeah. It's a decent enough comparison.

You don't have to understand how come someone would cut themselves, in fact, I wish you never do. For me it was an outlet for my frustration, at times I did it bcs I despised how I looked okay on the outside when nothing was okay on the inside. I hated that unlike a normal illness you couldn't see how I was suffering, it became a coping mechanism and an addiction spanning over 10 years. Addicted to the rush which felt like relief like Ren calls it

If you think about it, man, Sony dropped him so imagine getting signed by a major label and then not being able to perform at your commitments because of your health and you’re only 20 years old that’s got a mess with your head on top of all the other shit messing with his head, I mean it’s a miracle that he made it to 33 without well you know and it’s a miracle that he still grind it out and still grinding it out he’s gonna be a mega star I believe. He’s only about like 80% healthy. He still gets treatments in Canada but he just headlined the festival last week in the UK and I think he’s going to tour the states next year and drop another album probably up near New York so he can just be a quick plane ride to Canada.

If you ever practiced martial arts combat sports, like boxing or Muay thai you'd understand. Sometimes you do need to get hit in the face and feel (controlled) pain to actually grow both as martial artist and as person and re-humanize yourself
