Two first tales are based on a true story. Violet`s tale was written two years later and sealed the drama into Shakespear-level tragedy.

That's extremely misleading though as virtually everything in the first two tales isn't factual, beyond the fact that a 14 year old boy killed a young woman with a knife. The woman wasn't 14, nor was she a prostitute, like Jenny. The boy was arrested, not shot etc etc...

The article that this is based off of ended with the quote "It's such a shame." She mentioned how the lyrics repeat; Everything repeats, Ren did that to point out that this stuff needlessly happens over and over in an endless cycle, it's such a shame.

That's misleading. Most of those stories are also made up by Ren. He read an article in the middle pages of a newspaper about a stabbing by a 14 year old boy with the headline "Such a shame". It resonated with him that it was so common that it was barely news.

I guess this is a modern-day version of how (a long time ago) a bard used to entertain, with only a 'voice talent' and a musical instrument: Telling a (harsh) story about life , and being true to the story that must be told to the listeners.. Great comments here, Elvann. 👍👍

Recently I read an article that said often minstrels (or bards) told stories that made fun of the nobility (including the king or queen) and sometimes got the peasants and townsfolk so riled up that they would riot. In other words, they were truth-tellers and--like Ren--"went hard" and didn't pull any punches.

I love that I’ve heard this song probably near 100 times and I always notice another small, key line or connection. When he’s talking about Jenny during the mugging, he continuously refers to her as stone like, first a stalactite and then a statue. Great first use of the imagery of a stalactite, and then the continuous connection to the blade that could “bite through steel and slice concrete”.

Jenny's tale was based on a true event of a young prostitute being killed by a young hoodlum. The report ended with the reporter saying, "It's such a shame". Screech was born out of that story as well but Ren fleshed it out some. It was a few years later that Ren finished the dark tragedy off if his coupe de grass birthed from his own dark thoughts on the issue. Ren has said that the "It's such a shame" saying was part of the true story that stood out to him since it's almost a throw away line today. *I* believe he decided to take that line and enhance it so much and make it so dark with the idea of generational violence, above and beyond just the recurring violence in one persons life, so as to bring meaning back to the phrase, "It's such a shame".

It was based on VERY limited info in a brief newspaper story, not a tv news report. There was nothing about 'it's such a shame'. The young woman wasn't 14, nor was she a prostitute, like Jenny. The boy was arrested, not shot... Basically, all the brief report in the paper said, was that a 14 year old boy was arrested for the murder of a young woman, in a knife attack. Apart from the time and place, that was it. Ren can be very convincing but people need to stop getting carried away ans spreading untrue nonsense and misinformation. If you don't know for certain, check first before posting.

@@Codex7777 OMG Karen much? I never mentioned 14 I said young for both. I did mention prostitute as that is what I had heard but even that is not specific in the Tales, it's only hinted at. I never said "Screech" was killed in the real story. You do know that they call them "news paper reporters" right? I never specified TV or print. I have heard Ren talk about the meaning of "It's such a shame" in live discussions. Even if it wasn't in the actual story that is PART of the basis of the story... how callous we have all become when we hear such stories. Your comment would have been informative (mostly) had you left off your last insult. So, again, stop Karening as you added, at most, two pieces of information I did not have correct in my retelling and then became condescending and insulting. Please do better.

Mm. Excellent reaction. I like your perspective a lot. I'm so glad for you that your mom took your concerns seriously. I know a lot of women who had similar backgrounds, but whose mothers, well... at best turned a blind eye to what their boyfriends were doing, and at worst, basically pimped them out to them. My sister-in-law has such a tale. She's still working on healing, but it'll be a life-long journey. My understanding is that Ren took inspiration for Jenny and Screech's tales from a newspaper article from around the time when he published those, in 2019. If you know that, then Violet's tale being set in 2005 makes a lot of sense, since the twins were 14. It also helps to know that in the UK, "Jenny" and "James" are the generic orphan's names, similar to "John" and "Jane" in the US. I'm sure most cultures have similar tropes. This is a song that gets darker the more you think about it. Like... Jenny. A "lady" in high-heeled shoes. Only at the end of Violet's tale we now know she was a fourteen-year-old girl. And yet she'd "walked this floor" (Brit for streets) about a thousand times before. What kind of fourteen-year-old girl is out late at night, looking like a lady, wearing high heels, walking her route for the thousandth time? Yeeeah... she didn't exactly have a great life either. Screech is just as much a victim as a villain. Richard is a victim, too. This is real life... the lines just aren't clear-cut like they are in most fiction. Also, Screech's girlfriend being "busy" and his buddy Patrick not being home when he needed him? Not a coincidence. They were together at the time.

This set of stories was from an article he read about a prostitute that was stabbed. Sreeches tale came a year later and Violet was years after that. He has a background in folk festivals from his childhood and that is where his story telling abilities may have been fostered. You can hear it in these tales.... or I can. There was a newspaper article Ren read about two youths dying the same night, it was a young prostitute killed by another youth, and a responding officer killed the youth, and indeed he was shaken. It was his commanding officer that was quoted saying 'they were so young, it's such a shame.' Violet's Tale was a way to bring the tales together and speak to intergenerational trauma, note the trauma response of the children mirror that of the parents, even if they didn't grow up with them. Given genetic predisposition and the same environment of trauma, a history repeating itself. These were produced about a year apart and only a year ago did Ren compile them in a single release, which is needed as in the very worst YT Reaction video they did Violet's Tale FIRST, and you can imagine how it wrecked the experience for them and anyone unfortunate to watch it.

@Random-Person_
@Random-Person_ 9 ай бұрын
The further you dig into the lyrics the more the connections and layers you can find interwoven to the 3 tales! Jenny is walking the streets late at night, with rosy cheeks and high heels shoes, just like she's done a thousand times before trying to find somewhere to sleep....a prostitute at 14 years old! Her first reaction at being confronted is to freeze up, just like Violet (her mother) did all her life. Screech on the other hand is loud and egotistical and mean, just like Stevie (his dad) was. Screech panics when his friend Patrick isn't home and calls his girlfriend and goes off on her on the phone when she says she's busy (busy with Patrick maybe?) and then attacks the cops. The first 2 tales were written in 2019 so when Ren "rewinds the hands of time to tell Violet's tale" its 14 years earlier.....in London city in 2005 when the twins, Jenny and Screech, were born to Violet the night she died. We can then assume that Stevie went to prison for killing Violet and the twins were separated at birth until Screech unknowingly meets and kills his own sister while mugging her 14 years later! Masterful well thought out storytelling!
@stubyles1654

She was not a prostitute.....listen to the lyrics abit closer...."she was heading back home to sleep" and the only mention of Highs Heels is the line "she stayed as still as a statue in High Heeled shoes" implies the statue having to stay still not jenny wearing High Heels and screechs line "I will slice the rosy from your cheeks"....seems youve put a few separate lines together and assumed something that is not implied at all in the tale.

I’m not sure if you got the ending or if that’s already been mentioned, but Violet was Jenny & Screech’s mother. They were twins who didn’t know each other as they were raised separately in the same city, orphaned because their mother was killed by their father, who surely ended up in prison. It’s definitely a commentary on generational violence (Jenny had the characteristics of her mother, Screech of his father) and all came to the same or similar end tragic end.

Nearly correct. He doesn't fast forward like you think. The scale instead takes us back to the start of Jenny's tale in the hospital. The story of her brutal abuse just before the chromatic scale is also in 2005. Jenny's story is an evolving time line of her life up until the point of her death. It therefore doesn't need a fast forward.

WOW!!! You are the FIRST reactor I've heard that has mentioned the de-tuning of the guitar work!! Elizabeth (Charismatic Voice) alludes to it, but she doesn't say it directly like you did. I'm impressed! It was one of my first impressions with "Hi Ren." My theory (after listening infinity times) is that the guitar is TOTALLY in tune, or it would ALWAYS be out of tune a bit. Usually, he's right on the money, and perfectly in tune and with perfect timing. I think he is skilled enough to INTENTIONALLY detune some of his progressions. It's for effect, or impact. I suspect there isn't much he does by 'accident.' His genius plans it and guides, with the exception of some of his completely "in the moment" ad libs. Okay, for this song, your reaction is a two-fer. First time hearing you, AND the first time hearing this piece. I have listened to 'Hi Ren' around infinity times... for some reason your thumbnail grabbed me a few minutes ago after listening to yet another reaction to that piece. This piece is ALSO incredible. I'm not surprised by that, but I AM a bit stunned. His intensity is even greater here than in Hi Ren!

You need to do the Ren x Chinchilla collabs. Chalk outlines is more polished, but How To Be Me is darker and (to me) more emotional. Or do some stuff from his busking band "The Big Push"... much more fun, rather than introspective.

Ren has hugely broad influences I think - to me this is a 3-act Shakespearean play, a human tragedy glued together with the tragic irony of the ending plot twist(some people don’t get it the first time, nbd). The delivery, the roving story telling minstrel, sometimes talking directly to his audience, is reminiscent to me of those medieval entertainers. I can’t imagine either of those things are accidental. Neither is the almost baroque guitar. It’s brilliant and the social message is crushing. Another Ren winner.

It was a light bulb moment for me... "london city, far from pretty 2005" and the year that jenny's tale was released was 2019... We're told that screech is 14... The clues were there...

The tales are Rens masterpiece I’ve done a breakdown of all the main characters with my theories about how they all fit together on my YT but not all his music is as emotional as Hi Ren and the Tales you should look at some of his more upbeat stuff like “bitter sweet symphony “ a rework of The Verve’s song of the same name ,“ money game Pt2” is a fantastic lyric video or “ Genesis” it has such a good hook to it

The decending chromatic scale is signifying fast forwarding in time back to current day, appsoed to the ascending chromatic scale at the start of the song signifying rewinding time into the past.

Ren tends to change the tuning of the strings because they weren't making the sound he wanted them to make. So, technically it's not "in tune"

You were very lucky to have a mother that protected you above all else when it came to her love life. I wasn't so lucky in my experience. My mother hooked up with a guy in my early childhood and he despised me immensely. I was beaten mercilessly behind closed doors and without prejudice for my entire childhood while she was with him, which lasted for about 8 years. He used to lock me in the garage and take out his anger and frustrations on me without mercy, I used to plead with him to stop and that I was sorry for whatever he was going through but that used to make him even more angrier and it elevated his aggression towards me to the point where he beat me unconscious. I never did know why he hated me so much, after all I was just a child of 8 at the time when my mother first met him but it didn't matter what I did I was never good enough. That man broke me into a thousand pieces, and I have been broken all my life because of the hell he put me through.

Would like to see your reaction to Ren's Band - The Big Push - and them singing 'Swan Song' - or their Fatboy Slim cover "Praise You" (only band member missing from these two is Glen the drummer).
