So underrated by the music business. Renaissance was an amazing group. So many people didn't understand prog rock. It was such a beautiful experience that reached down to your soul. I'm glad to have been born at a time musician made music embracing artist freedom. There were stories being told through songs. Now, It's such a popularity contest and money, money, money. I could listen to Annie Haslam sing over and over. Thanks for sharing this video.

Long time ( since the 70s) Renaissance follower. This was the beginning of the end for them. The band had jumped Record Co's thruout the 70s like a rock skimming over the water. At this point Warner Bros wanted the band to go more Commercial to sell more records. In order to keep the band relevant they started writing more Pop oriented tracks. After signing to IRS they recorded these two Lps: Camera Camera and Time-Line as an attempt at appealing to a wider audience. Sadly it failed to do so even though the core of Renaissance was still somewhat shining albeit dimly. The departures of John Tout ( (Kybrds ) then Terence Sullivan ( Drums) and ultimately Jon Camp (Bass) basically closed a long chapter of a great group. Those later Lps did have several songs that had their moments, but the Renaissance that many knew , ceased after these releases.

Time-Line is routinely slagged, but the first side of it is really very good as long as you aren't expecting orchestral songs.

One of the highlights of working at our College radio station in the mid 70s was discovering Renaissance in the pile of demo records we would get from the distributors. Found Live a Carnegie Hall and was instantly captivated by the group and Annie’s amazing range. Found all the other vinyl as quickly as I could, and still have them all. Just superb talent all through..

One of my favorites by them, actually. Gotta love Prog bands and their literary references! But this was the last good album by them; the 70s Prog bands moved into the synth 80s and created poppier songs to survive.

Got a right to your opinion, Mark. I love all 11 albums I have, of theirs. The 1980’s music grew on me, in time. And they didn’t completely abandon the different time signatures, and other clever things with composing their 80’s music. Not like Genesis, in my humble opinion. That went from creating interesting 1970’s progressive rock, to 1980’s bad, monotonous, throwaway pop, that made them millions !! At too high a price, I think.

Thank you for uploading. :o)) I wonder where this footage comes from. I once owned tales of 1001 Night when all the albums weren't available on CD yet... but it's from Azure d'Or, that I finally found on CD. It's nice to see the band performing. I wonder where this was recorded... it's not the studio version, is it ? It seems to me that during a brief moment, around 1:28-1:29, the synth is out of tune... but If this is live in a studio, I wonder why the sound fades out at the end, anyway... Weird. Annie's in top shape. and Jon Camp does a great job on bass and backing vocals.

Thanks for watching! This footage comes from a DVD of the band filmed at Mill House & Bray Studios in 1979. The DVD includes mostly songs off Azure D'or, in a live "unplugged" style, such as of Forever Changing, Winter Tree, and Carpet of the Sun which are also available here on KZbin. This performance of Jekyll and Hyde unfortunately is one of the few ones off the DVD that was not recorded with live audio. The fade at the end of course is the obvious giveaway, and the audio track itself from what I can tell seems to be the same as the official studio recording. I think the out-of-tune synth you noticed is perhaps some kind of pitch distortion in the tape.

Azure d'Or last album of Renaissance classic line up. Not quite on par with such classics as Scheherazade and Song for all Seasons but still way better than two horrible new wavish releases from the eighties. I think John Tout's departure was ruinous for once stellar band.
@mikejzx2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, this was also the first of their albums to not have any of the longer epic/progressive pieces that the band was known and loved for. Tout's departure definitely had a huge detrimental impact on the band's future releases; he played such a key role in the band's greatest songs, and his classical approach to playing was a defining feature of their sound. It's such a shame what happened to this band in the 80s though!

Yeah, Renaissance released two albums in the 21st century Tuscany and Grandine. Decent works but below their prime albums between 1972-78. Bassist Jon Camp never reunited with them though (perhaps inner conflict?). It's a pity for me, cause he's great on bass and provided some good backing vocals to Annie.
@salrial7442 жыл бұрын
John Tout wasn't the issue, it was being forced to change with music tastes and the unionization of orchestras. Record companies didn't want to spend that kind of money (which the musicians deserved, imo), especially on a relatively unknown band, and they didn't want music that sounded like early to mid 70s. Members of the band have said as much. They didn't have a big following, so they couldn't dictate terms to the record execs. Those are the main factors. The change from orchestrations to synthesizers was a shock to fans of the earlier music and they couldn't cope. It wasn't as much of an issue with younger people like me and other people my age who discovered them a bit later than when they started. I loved the classical aspect of the earlier work, but it wasn't a make or break thing. I mostly liked Camera, Camera, although the sound quality was harsh. I will say I think Timeline was bad. The songwriting was a dramatic drop. But this is like music criticism in general. You like it, you sort of like it or you don't. Nothing will change that unless you appreciate music mainly on an intellectual level.
