This must be the most understated, yet most sophisticated group in the world. Each song is a work of art, while their concept albums are legendary. Despite the changes in personnel and sad loss of its its founding members - barring the truly exquisite Annie Haslam - whose 5-octave voice is the closest one may get to heaven - its a testament to their musical genius that they’re still touring and performing in this millennium. I’ve listened to them from the 70’s - and still do - and their music is a wonderful inspiration and remains as fresh as ever. Long live Renaissance who brought so much of joy to many of us.

My God! I almost burst in tears when I found this restored video, a great, great English band from zillions of years ago. When you listen this marvelous way of make music you just can realize the abyss on wich music has came down after almost half of century. I guess never has been happened something so disturbing in cultural history as the shittty music many made today. In comparison, this is like arrive to the Everest of music knowing you are all alone and no one arrive to make you company. I still have the original Ashes are Burning vinyl album from 1974, a masterpiece of beauty and balance, and later on I buy the double CD wich includes Prologue and Ashes are Burning. Thanks for share this musical jewel!

In my opinion, the best Prog rock band to have ever assembled. I know that's controversial, and most people would disagree with me, but I am STILL listening to them all the time. I recently sold most of my LPs and CDs. I kept all of theirs though. 🙀

Good for you. I'm okay with that claim. Not my favourite band, but definitely in my Top 10 - and, considering who the other bands are (you might guess), it' still an honour to rank there. I'd keep all of their albums too - as I told someone recently, they're "one band whose music I couldn't live without".

@@MikeFlood-oe3tu That is an interesting question. What is my top 10? I suppose it depends on my mood and the day you ask me, but off the top of my head right now it would be (not necessarily what I think is the most important, but what I personally over time still listen to the most): 1. Renaissance 2. Jethro Tull 3. ELP 4. King Crimson 5. Rush 6. Marillion 7. Moody Blues 8. Led Zeppelin 9. Roxy Music 10. The Heartthrobs

Takes me back to younger days of my youth. First time I saw them was in Carnegie Hall 1974. I never heard of them before (never heard much of anything. I was 18). I fell in love with them instantly. The rest is history. Thank you for the comfort for the past 50 years. Every tune became part of my life. With love❤

I fell in love with them from that concert - on a tape that a friend brought me. I had a bunch of people over (I was 15 and my mom was out of town, of course!), and he popped that little cassette into my tape player and said "You're going to like this...." I wound up leaving the party to go listen where it was quiet, elsewhere in the house... and 50 years later, I'm still listening to Renaissance. In college, as a voice major, I could sing right along with Annie - every high note. That's gone now, as it is for her too. We saw her in concert maybe 7 or 8 years ago, in a small club venue. Even with vocal changes, it was still wonderful.

I could watch this over and over. This band is as good as any prog rock group and better than most. John Tout should be ranked up with Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks etc. I prefer listening to this performance over the overly orchestrated CD versions. What ever happened to beautiful melodies and harmonies? BTW - I've had a crush on Annie for 50 years!

"Ashes Are Burning" always gives me goosebumps and my hair stands up when Annie belts out in an other worldly voice " Imagine the burning embers......Ashes are burning the WAY!.." The very best music band in the world... no other band comes even close. Each of them were 100% genius, including the song writer that the majority do not give attention to Beth Thatcher. After living and traveled to 60 countries, I never found one that could match. The first time I listened to them was in Sept 1979 and since them they did not leave my heart... I listened to their perfect songs (with a few exceptions) over 10,000 times and never get tired and only after the first 2 or so decades I was able to start learning some of the secrets which normally we do not realize. If there is perfection is popular music.. they are THE ONE!

Wow! What treasure! What a wonderful video, great quality of image and sound. I've enjoyed their music from 1976 on when I bought Live at Carnegie Hall and started searching for all their albums from then on. Great band at their peak. Great songwriting. Love it! Many thanks for posting this video ❤️

At first, thanks so much for sharing this great footage of one of my favourite bands. I discovered them not earlier than in 1984, so it was after their heydays. Being a drummer I find it remarkably Terry Sullivan obviously playing a silver sparkle 70s Gretsch drumset, as later on he switched to Slingerland. Another special thing is the smaller cymbal on the right hand side of his ride cymbal - it is a Paiste Sound Edge bottom hi hat cymbal, normally not used as a crash cymbal. I have always liked his light and swingy drumming style. I wish I had the possibility to see them in those times...

I noticed the sound edge hi hat as a crash too. I’ve got one, I might try it out!

In the epic version of 'Can you understand' live at Carnegie Hall (June 20, 21, 22, 1975) I love his drumming supported by the NY Philharmonic Orchestra and Jon Camp who holds the bass figure. They are amazing. One of my favorite all time rock songs.

This video is amazing and gives me morale for the inconvenience of not being able to attend Renaissance in the cancelled Night of the Prog in Lorelei (Germany) this year and also in 2020 (also cancelled). The interview to John Tout in the introduction is fantastic, explaining why he was considered a soft spoken and well-educated legendary keyboardist. There is a surprising cite to Franz Listz as favorite musician. Not to Prokofiev (as in his shirt of the back cover of A Song for All Seasons) or to Rimsky-Korsakov (for Scheherazade and one of the last movements of Things I Don´t Understand). Probably because Michael Dunford was mainly involved in the selection and composition of this music and he was very interested on Russian composers.

There are traces of Debussy's compositions in his work too! John was an amazing pianist, he had "the touch", an incredible feel in his playing. All members of this great (an unique in its style) band were marvellous musicians. This is the way most of their gigs were played back then: no symphonic orchestra (like on some greats tracks of their studio an the "Carnegie Hall" albums), no tapes running... just them with their instruments. It's curious how they managed to play many "orchestral parts" just with Annie's voice and John's piano and (later) some synths. Great work! Thanks for posting this video.

Great document ! 32 minutes of happiness... and for once I hear them talk in my native language... The late John Tout is speaking quite OK in French. Thanks a lot for uploading this. The quality is really good for a video that is really old. and the filming is good too.

Thanks so very much for sharing. Now all we need is some footage (if not a full concert) of the classic lineup with an orchestra. It's a shame so little concert/performance footage of the band exists but I'll take what I can get. :)
