About Fat Cells: It is true that fat cells do not disappear but can only shrink or expand. According to research published by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, the number of fat cells in the human body remains fairly constant throughout adulthood, regardless of weight fluctuations. When you lose weight, fat cells shrink as they contain less fat, but they do not go away. Similarly, when you gain weight, fat cells can expand to accommodate more fat. However, it is also noted that about 10% of fat cells die and are replaced each year, regardless of an individual’s age or weight. This turnover of fat cells may offer potential for treatments targeting fat cell regeneration as a way to manage obesity. In summary, while the total number of fat cells remains relatively stable, they can change in size based on fat content. This is why weight management can be challenging, as the body tends to maintain a stable number of fat cells even after significant weight loss.

I paid particular attention to your first and second points since, almost exactly one year ago, I started taking the gym and bodybuilding seriously and methodically, as the months prior I was doing a dreamer bulk and at my worst became 296lbs at 6’0” tall. After watching your dieting made simple series, I am now 227lbs and today am starting my third 3-month cut to ~200lbs. The thing is, I am interested in participating in an amateur bodybuilding competition one day, and the point you made regarding permanently affecting the quantity of fat cells you have was particularly poignant to me in light of the facts. The best part of learning to reduce body fat while training hard is that you can document all your set-weights and repetitions you managed for the past x months while giving your highest % of performance, and while you enter caloric-defizit and loose substantial body-fat and train under restricted energy levels you either learn to give more than your maximum % of known workload-performance to hold on to your achievements or give them up slowly. The struggle is awesome, after the challenge you reset your weight and mostly uphold everything else and after 3 weeks of caloric-maintainance you regain your strenghtened metabolism to push even further this time. After repeating this 2-3x times for 2years you already stronger & more aesthetic than 95% of the (natural) gym-goers.

He’s not joking about the fat gain part, be it via bulking or just plain old being far too fat for a prolonged period of time. The permanent effects are no fun. And even then, Mike’s case of ”just” having love handles and stretch marks is on the better end of things. You could also end up in a situation where you’ll never be able to get truly lean ever again, messed up proportions, and still get the unatractive parts of leaness like a gaunt face. It can really mess with you mentally. Yes, you can be one of the lucky ones that end up with no permanent effects on your body (at least not any visual ones). But I for one wouldn’t risk it; it’s not worth it.

I lost over a hundred pounds since last year, going from 287 to 179 as a 6t tall male age 39. I came off of the diet about 4 months ago and am already back up to 196. I never stopped eating the good foods I used to lose the weight but I kept adding extra, believing that my metabolism would adjust to burn more (gain more). I work very hard in the gym lifting weights and cardio. Obviously, it didn't work. If you start adding cheese to your eggs, you'll blow up again in no time. I will say, however, that I'm making consistent gains with most muscle groups faster than ever before. It doesn't feel the same when your gut rolls over your lap while doing low rows. It's quite embarrassing, actually.

It’s surprising how underrated the book You Are Stronger Than You Think from Cryptic Lore is. It covers everything from mental toughness to boosting testosterone naturally

Unfortunately Dr Mike still seems to be in denial about the mistakes he made to come in 6th place in his bodybuilding competition. I wouldn’t listen to him for diet advice when he can’t properly condition for a show or even admit his mistakes. Watch the coach Greg videos for the true story.

Would be great if you could quote or link studies that back up your claims. Not that I do not believe what you are saying, but for some claims, especially when you directly address certain studies or scientific development, it would be great to look that up. Imo its just part of a scientific presentation. At least if you want to stay in the realm of scientific inquiry. Otherwise, even if you do not do that, you could literally fabricate anything and people would believe you.

Great video as always. It sucks for me because I’m stuck in a conundrum. As a rugby forward (those who play will know) I HAVE to be on the bigger end. This means being anywhere between 20-25 percent fat to weigh enough to not get bullied in contact. That being said, this last offseason I dieted down to 18 percent body fat and looked and felt great. Fast forward to the first preseason game and I literally felt like a boy amongst men. I was giving up 30-40 pounds to opponents as opposed to my usual 10-20 pounds before. I prioritize performance and have gained back about 10 pounds most of it being fat. It sucks because I loved how I looked leaner, but I guess I’ll just have to accept I need to be on the fluffier end until I’m done playing rugby.
