the concept of maintenance phases between diets was a revelation. id just hit the 10% weight loss mark on my diet and since it was a week before christmas i decided to go ahead and do a 10 week maintenance based on the info in one your previous lectures on the topic and it has been such a good decision. i hadnt even realized i was starting to fatigue on my diet until i eased back. now i'm eating at maintenance and putting that extra energy into my training and feeling great. ty for these lectures, for someone really new to the science side of fitness and nutrition like myself they are gold!

I love you so much for these videos. I’ve had so many people around me that follow the wackiest diets, insisting that they’re the way humans MEANT to be eating! Fad diet after fad diet, touting scientific “facts” that don’t hold up to basic common sense scrutiny. I’ve lost noticeable weight twice in my life. 15 years ago, I lost 33 pounds. Then this past spring I lost 20 pounds, because I had gained back 20 pounds over the intervening years. Everyone asks what magic trick I used. Calorie deficit. But did you cut out this or this or that? Calorie deficit. Did you change when you ate? Calorie deficit. Are you working out more? No, I’m already active. Calorie. Deficit. No one believes that that will do it. And no one believes me when I tell them how many calories they are eating. They insist they eat 500-1000 calories less than I see them eating! I was just now getting frustrated, because I lost the weight by March, then maintained it until a month ago (July). Then 3-4 pounds crept back on. But, I feel better hearing you explain the “lose weight, maintain weight, lose a little more”. So, I was subconsciously doing that. I had maintained for a few months, but got complacent and started to creep back up. Instead, now is when I should be working on that last 5-10 pounds, and then maintain THAT long term. Thank you for explaining that so well!

I wish everybody could be able to hear all the stuff you talk about and be so much more educated as well as entertained. Maybe they’ll be confused but I’ll be laughing at all the analogies that really do the job of painting the picture of what you’re explaining. Thank you Dr Mike

2 years late to the vid, but discovered it at the perfect time. I just spent 5 months unemployed, living off my severance package while I studied. In that time, my only active hours were spend weight lifting, so my diet was catered nicely to that. But as my finances started to dwindle, it was time for a new job. And this job is incredibly cardio-centric, loading and unloading delivery lorries with furniture, beds, mattresses, etc, trying to meet deadlines and quotas. It goes without saying that my calorie intake needed to increase to sustain my energy levels, but the convenient food and drinks are in the form of pepsi, redbull, crisps and chocolate from the vending machines (the warehouse is in the middle of nowhere), or the bakery food van that comes by at lunch. Not only are they not ideal foods and drinks to choose, but they're fucking expensive too.... So I've started to bring rice and chicken and gfuel to get me through the shift... This video is exactly what I've been mulling over these past few weeks, and it's a great feeling knowing I'm intuitively living by RP doctrine. Big love

Great video! Time lose some sustainably. But I need to comment about the "mistaking thirst for hunger"-myth, because there is a hint of truth in it. But it's not the hunger people mistake thirst for, but it's desire to eat for pleasure. I myself have experienced this often. I wander around my apartment and end up opening fridge and eating something small. Actually just nibbling something. But not because I'm hungry but because of the desire to taste something good. And here it helps to drink something instead of nibbling. I always keep water bottle in the fridge and if I catch my self opening the fridge and I'm not hungry or it is not time to eat, I drink some water. And the urge goes away for a while.

A little correction on the battle of Marathon: the Greeks did win against the Persians. One person, Phidippides, run from Marathon to Athens (approx. 42 km) to tell the Athenians (not the King, Athens was already a democracy!) about the victory and to warn them that the Persian battleships were heading towards Piraeus (port of Athens). He died because of the fatigue from the battle combined with the running to Athens afterwards.

Also, the distance we know today (26.219 miles/42.195 km) was set at the 1908 London Olympics and didn’t become the standard until the 1924 Games. Prior marathons varied according to the lay of the land and were just meant to be somewhere in the 40-ish kilometer (25-ish mile) range.

Can being on TRT eliminate the need for diet breaks or alter their frequency/duration? If someone is losing weight steadily at 1% of their body weight per week has calculated their caloric intake correctly, or very very close as shown by the weight loss and is still energetic, happy, sexually functional, doing well with the exercise regimen and sleeping great, should they force themselves to *stop?* If they were not on TRT and all of those other things were true, again, should they be told _"OK, you've been at this for 3 months, you've done fantastic. I know you still feel good and the weight is still falling off while your lifts are going up or maintaining, but we are still going to take an August-October break."_ Would it be better to hold off and wait to see if they do start to stall? If they do start having lower energy/libido or going through any of the things that are so common when dieting for an extended period of time? Or perhaps hold off until the holidays if everything stays the way it is then suggest they take Thanksgiving through New Years off? And...what if they just want to pause for a few days on Thanksgiving and the few days that follow, maybe to get a couple of extra turkey and stuffing sandwiches down without having to worry about walking for an axtra 3 hours to account for the extra calories in one sandwich? Then They also only want to break from Christmas Eve through New Years Eve? What if they are doing incredibly well, again, 1% per week, nailing everything, and they say _"Nah, I can just fit my Thanksgiving season meals in with my regular calories. I'm good. Maybe I'll take New Year's Eve and New Year's off so I can get a trashed with the Mrs's and act like a high school kid then have a hangover breakfast the next day. Other than that, I feel really good and sincerely do not want to call this off for; *months?!?* Now if I were the client, I would feel like I was doing something wrong *OR* that there was a big disconnect between my dietician and myself. I am well aware that 95%+ of people who lose over 20lbs on a diet keep that weight off for 5 years, but that is on *ANY* calorically restrictive diet regardless of duration. I'm also aware that only 5% of the people who join a gym every year are still going 3 months later. I believe only 15% of Americans, in total, go to the gym once a week or more on a yearly basis, so simply going to the gym and getting in 2 or 3 solid days per week is already showing the discipline that 95% of US residents who signed up for the gym could not maintain. Staying on a diet for 3 months without going over on calories *once* or taking a _cheat day_ also shows some abnormal control *_imo._* Now I am bringing this up because I am obviously going through it as we speak and am not sure what to do. DO I say _"Yep, you got 2 extra reps with 205 past your previous best, lost another 1.8lbs last week for a total of 75.3lbs, but you have to take some time off even though you seem very unhappy about it and it is obvious it is putting you in a kinda shitty place. Man up and deal with it, and up your calories by 900/day."_

I am actually often not sure if i am thirsty or hungry, but i have pretty weak thirst and hunger signaling, i used to not drink for days and end up horribly dehydrated so i made drinking a habit by always having something to drink close by and just sip it even if i feel no need to. Hunger is similar, It takes atleast 24 hours between meals before i even get mildly hungry, so i often just eat because it is time to eat not because i feel hungry. So there are these times where i feel that vague physical discomfort and i am not sure is it thirst is it hunger? Then i eat a little bit and it turns out it wasn't that, so i drink and it was that and vice versa. Over time it got a little bit better by listening to my body better but the distinction and signaling is still not very good and precise.

How often should we weigh ourselves?
@Magic_beans_2 жыл бұрын
He mentions this in a prior video, I think Rates & Durations. For best tracking, he suggests at least three times a week. It’s one of those diminishing-return things: three is way better than one or two, but five is only marginally better than three. Seven is maybe slightly better, but if it’s an inconvenience don’t worry about it. One thing I personally would advise is to be consistent; if you’re going to weigh on Saturdays weigh every Saturday. Sometimes folks will want to skip days when they feel heavier or assume their weight would be up. I can appreciate why people want to do that, but it’s kind of hiding from the problem. In the long run I think it’s healthier to face up to it, to see those weight fluctuations come and go so it really registers that they’re normal and temporary.
