You're one of the best Mike! I'm down now 131 lbs! I went from 311 lbs to 180s depending on the day. I reached 12% BF and I'm pretty proud of it. It's taken me nearly 3 years. I never put a time table on when I would be "done".I fell in love with the process! I found you afterwards but the constant reminders of how I got here. Along with now chasing body recomp goals. Before watching: Im part of a trainer group and they all increase their clients calories because “YOURE NOT EATING ENOUGH SO YOUR BODYS HOLDING ONTO FAT” I have always believed that the reason some people see results when they finally add calories into their clients diet is because now the client is actually able to adhere, and they weren’t doing so before on their starvation diets.

I feel like that’s the target market for this myth, people for whom dieting means slashing calories and balls-to-the-wall workouts every day. Is it literally correct, no. But if it gets them onto a more sustainable plan, it’s probably worth it.
@jadetice875
@jadetice875 Жыл бұрын
In some cases this is true. I have clients who continue eating the same amount week after week while on a training program, in turn, their energy levels decline + their training is impacted negatively, so they actually miss training sessions and become more injury prone from being sedentary all day after our sessions or working around their home.

As Dr. Mike says at 9:00, it is true from a certain point of view. Lots of dieters think they need to go on a severe deficit, which can lead to cycles of bingeing and restricting. A more moderate deficit that promotes better adherence is going to be more effective.

To be fair: one of the first diets I was put on by a coach (and RP's diet did the same thing subsequently) did actually have me eating significantly more volume of food than I was used to, but it was the switch away from calorie dense foods that caused this.

For me this has been true in practicality, but that’s because I was losing weight on too steep of a deficit and it wasn’t sustainable so I rebounded and ate all the donuts. Now my calorie budget is larger & I exercise more and I’m not in a rush, feels way better and I’m not stressed out like before

This is true for me as well, but I don't think it's because I'm actually eating more. I think I replaced the bingeing with good quality foods and put more emphasis on activity, like you mentioned. So Dr. Mike is definitely correct and so are you. I think this saying was originally all about the perception of how much someone is eating with nutritional density rather than the actual caloric amount and it's been misconstrued now in the diet industry.

I may be an edge case but every time a trainer has worked with me to reduce my calories beyond a certain point my body was putting on fat like crazy and would stay that way. They would scratch their heads and try to drive me to more restrictive diets which I followed religiously. Tracking absolutely everything, maintaining a strict diet for months at a time. My body fat would not drop and on the more restrictive diets I was going insane with hunger pains. I maintain a high amount of strenuous activity in my routine, training to stay competitive and strong in my activities. Every single time that I increased my calories (in a healthy and balanced fashion) to a certain point, my body fat would drop significantly and stay down. After many years of finding the right amount of calories for me, I realized that dropping too low does have a negative result for me.

The mistake I hear constantly with these people are if you eat 600 calories, you will lose weight. Yeah but what weight, to keep it off you need muscle. Which is why when you increase calories the body builds muscle immediately and burns fat. You now have a faster metabolism to work with. Now losing body fat is much easier. Playing the long game and not crash dieting is the only sustainable way to keeping it off.

Oh yeah, had that phenomenon of gaining weight while in a deficit after being on a diet for 2,5 months. I gaines weight, my definition kinda got worse, everything got REALLY flabby etc. I was downing diet soda in gallons haha. I got stressed out more sp I gained even more water weight. And then, after 2 weeks I dropped like 1,2 kg over night.

11:00 I’d probably adjust that 500-1,000 range to something like 15-30% of your current intake. Cutting from 2,000 to 1,500 is already tough, but going to 1,000 would be brutal. And some populations - I’m especially thinking of ladies who’ve been on the diet treadmill since puberty - will push the high end of whatever range you tell them.
@richardmiddleton7770
@richardmiddleton7770 2 жыл бұрын
People mistake weight gain and loss with FAT gain and loss, that is what is going on here. Your metabolism will slow as you reduce calories further but also your likely to move less or at least less intensely so your muscle mass will reduce and every little thing you eat will most likely be stored as fat as your body is not only burning less but is also in a stressed state and fat gain is a survival mechanism.

Was feeling super proud of myself for sticking to a slow and steady approach but was freaking out because the weight on the scale wasn't moving, and I just looked about the same if not worse. The water weight totally makes sense and I did start drinking like 6 diet sodas a day so I'm betting this was it. I'll keep trusting the process and moving forward. Thanks Dr. Israetel

Along the same lines as “5 day deficit, until you crack and eat everything” but more subtle, lots of people have little nibbles they don’t really think about and so they don’t get tracked. A pinch of granola, finishing the kids’ uneaten chicken nuggets, getting something to eat while you’re waiting for your food to cook, stuff like that. Then when you’re hungry, those little things get bigger.

The only thing I maybe think could be at least added to the “grains of truth” section - if you go into caloric surplus to build muscle, the more muscle you have increases your maintenance calories, which then makes it easier to lose weight. So if you really stretch, you could maybe say if you eat more it can help you lose weight.

Amazing advice, I was cutting calories and increasing activity with hardly any result. This was discouraging … so I decided to hop on a diet break and I broke through a plateau after 2 days. I dropped 4 pounds, and now I know it was because of hormone and salt intake! I suspected salt was an issue, so I started salting my meals during prep only to keep it consistent for the week. However the break made the difference, it shifted my hormones, and I just dumped a whole bunch of water. I think hormones really have a big impact.

This explains a lot. Gained like 2 kg despite feeling like being way below what a smart person would (80 kg male and clearly below 2000 kcal, often decent breakfast and one bigger meal, a snack at night). Felt tired and malnutritioned but was bad at keeping to good meal habits - eating too rarely, not enough veggies even though the meals weren't that big and not bad nutrition by any standards. Very low activity outside weights though. Been gaining noticeable shape (core was always small, legs too, now more normal), but I suppose part of it is water in the muscles from hydrating better than normally when training/recovering. Sometimes even added some salt for drinking too much water. And obviously stress and messy sleep. Not surprisingly feeling cold goes away when you eat enough often enough. And you're right, even when you order something decently healthy when you were too tired to make proper food for not being eating enough, it might have wrong balance and too much salt. Or even if you grab some half-prepared or ready meal from the store. We're guilty. You tend to forget those cases and it might be the extra for a couple of days even if you were eating way too little before. Really good advice in this video. Sleep, eat frequently enough to not feel empty and fix your plate model regarding the greens, because we know most of us don't... And cut those fries etc that you're taking too much. It's all confusing and perhaps difficult unless you do it right and don't try any shrotcut tricks. And with stress you might want to treat yourself with something special every now and then or treat it with some alcohol. Whoops, tons of unnoticed calories. I wouldn't rule out doing 200-500 kcal deficit diet either. Super easy to execute, doesn't kill you mentally and still gets the job done. But people watching RP probably take the phases seriously and try to stick to bulking and cutting effectively, which 200-500 probably does not. The best part about training relating to food for me is that it makes you more hungry, more energetic and lowers stress. Combined it makes me want greasy and salty foods less, it almost makes me crave veggies instead and being more energetic and eating more makes it easier to prepare proper food and eat it in time. The result being still eating less than excess, but better ratios and can commit to it.

I should do a video to demonstrate how drastic water weight gain can be in a short period of time. I have Addison's disease, so my body doesn't produce the hormone aldostorone which works to regulate the fluid balance in the body. The HRT isn't perfect so my body is always in salt wasting mode, just constantly purging salt from the body through excessive urination. To counteract all of that I consume between 5500-9000mg of sodium a day, and drink between 1.5-2.0 gallons of water a day. My weight fluctuates 5-7lbs throughout the day, and I go from being fairly shredded in the AM, to kinda bloated by midday, and then back to looking lean by bed time.

I’d also say it’s technically correct in terms of food volume. Within a given calorie budget, you can eat a lot more on a whole food, protein-rich diet than you could on a diet heavy in convenience foods.

I think it applies more to long term. If you eat at a slight surplus in tandem with lifting to build more muscle, BMR raises. So you'll burn more at rest. Then when you do cut, it'll be on a higher number of calories than your previous deficit.

I can't tell you how many times I had reddit tell me if I lost 2 pounds a week then my body would "enter starvation mode" and I'd gain weight and would be healthier doing nothing and staying at 30% bodyfat.

The pizza thing hit home, so did this video. I went down to 2000 calories this summer and tried to gain muscle and lose weight. It kinda worked bc I'm noticably bigger and a little skinnier but prob not as much if I just picked a Lane and stuck with it. Now bc of this channel I know to up the calories, build muscle (I got a belly now) and lose the weight on a cut after I properly gained the muscle first. It all makes sense for the first time in my life so thanks.

@@y2kvaporwave I actually took another approach from this channel doing 8-12 week blocks dialing it in for that period and then relaxing for a few weeks. It's slower but more sustainable than anything I've tried. I learned I wasn't ready for a full bulk/cut until I got better habits and scheduling down, but that's coming soon.

I don't think eating more calories would ever help lose weight, but I do think changing up my diet and eating better quality foods has helped me a lot. Whole grains, lots of greens, grilled meat or fish and plenty of water- even if you're not exercising you're feeling better. Dropping diet sodas is hard, though. It's truly garbage for you but the caffeine is a crutch. I managed to quit it for a while last year and I felt better, didn't even need caffeine then, but got back on it during a move.

It really worked for me, but the key was fueling my bike rides so I could ride more and burn more and then eat more and ride more and get more fit... It definitely wasn't just an easy cheat code for loss. It involved hours and hours and hours per week going up hills on bicycles

I had a cut where, every 2 weeks, I would slowly gain 2-3 lbs and then suddenly lose 5 lbs. It was maddening for the first few cycles, but eventually I learned to just trust the 5 lbs of water would come out when my body felt like it.

I’ve always enjoyed a good bit of salt, so I just figured that whenever I was cutting, I was just consuming the same amount of salt as normal, just across a smaller amount of food, but knowing that deficits lead to increased salt craving really explains why I always end up floating my rice in soy sauce. Thankfully I don’t seem to be one of the people that’s blood pressure is affected by sodium, or if I am, I must have deathly low blood pressure normally.

I was eating probably too little for my size for some time. As I'm eating about 500 calories more I'm actually in a pretty happy state. Glad to hear my change is right on track. I'm not really into the maintenance thing at this point in time. I keep track of everything - fitbit, and myfitnesspal, measure my food.

Damn, this answered a big question for me. I've been pushing probably a 1000 calorie deficit for more than 2 months and have barely lost a pound. Thought I was breaking the laws of thermodynamics because at almost 230 and being very active, my 2000 cals per day is barely covering my BMR. But I'm a big salt guy and have been pouring table spoons of celtic sea salt on my main meal daily. Have been justifying it because of my daily sauna use on top of exercise, but will definitely start reducing.

The biggest thing that helps me to lose weight is to food prep. I find it makes me responsible to myself. I cook everything weight and bag it and then stick in the freezer. I know each time I pull a bag out the freezer that its a calorie and macro meal with no nonsense. Luckily im far too cheap to buy fast food. Even if I was a millionaire I still wouldnt buy the stuff. Real food is so much cheaper!

This is obviously not what is being claimed in this myth, but one way in which I think (I say think because I haven't verified this other than through personal experience) you can lose weight by eating "more" is by eating more, lower calory density food (instead of less mass of food that contains more calories). You still get the calorie deficit but you feel less hungry if there's more weight in your stomach. Again, I haven't confirmed this empirically, but it makes sense to me logically and I was successful using that method.

It depends...on a daily basis you dont need to be in a deficit, but over a period of time you do...I run a 5:2 fast, and my TDEE is around 2900 calories. Everytime I end up in a situation where I am stuck in a range, the answer that works for me is to up calories and then I start losing weight again past the plateau. Effectively over the week I am still in a roughly 5K calorie deficit via the 2 fasts, but upping the calories on other days has had a tremendous effect on not only my weight loss overall but also on my body composition in favor of more muscle and less fat based on both tape measure and mirror/picture evidence. Also there have been studies that have shown that people who are in a caloric deficit for lengthy periods of time will lose significantly more weight over time if they bump back up to maintenance calories for a week or two before going back down every 6-8 weeks.
