This helped me ALOT! Watching this video made me realize I do not brace... At all.. I keep a tight core, but I do not actually brace. I've gotten used to breathing during squads, but I would be so out of breath or get dizzy, and I had a hard time increasing the weight. Last session I actually braced properly for the first time, and I ended up with 22lbs extra on the bar, and feeling much less fatigued. Thanks doc!

I used to squat 400 pounds for 10 reps with a belt till I had a umbilical hernia op. I gave up the belt and eventually got to the same weight and same reps. The belt can be a great help, but it can also hinder your progress as well. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thank you so much. This is EXACTLY the video I’ve been needing. Literally search “Renaissance Periodization on Lifting Belt” the other week because I don’t trust any other content creators as much as RP. I am an endurance athlete (cycling/running) that’s transitioned to lifting after multiple injuries. Currently dealing with some sort of stabilizer muscle issues around my L4-L5 (previously fractured my collarbone and L5 in crashes). I’m 5’10” 163lbs and can do sets of 8-10 reps at 320lbs on squat and deadlift without a belt and I’ve been debating on wearing a belt moving forward as 410lbs is the next goal. After watching this and reviewing some of the clinical studies, I’m going to start wearing one for higher load (both weight and volume) sets for all of the aforementioned benefits but keep it off during lower weight sets so I can focus on mind-muscle connection and continue to try and strengthen the stabilizer muscles.

Good advice I am one of the people that didn't ever use a softer fabric belt I just went straight to a super thick single prong powerlifting belt. I was still hesitant to use it the first few years because I thought it was important to be strong without a belt, but my spine took some injuries and now I always wear it when deadlifting 155 lb and up. I do that to get the form down while wearing the belt and so that I don't tire my lower back before the working sets. It's gotten me to a 530lb deadlift.

I didn't realise how important ab strength was untill after doing legs and deadlift after abs. My abs were shot and I just couldn't brace properly at all and struggled on the first rep when I normally do 8. Knew immediately that I needed the belt assistance.
@milancvetkovic16014 ай бұрын
First thing, people should never exercise abs before the complex lifting and especially not before heavy lifting. Core muscles stabilize your spine, that’s the major role. When performing like this, you are putting yourself at high risk because those core muscles are exhausted and like that you will be exposing your spine “naked”.Putting weight belt so you can do 8 reps should never be done, only at 1-2 reps max if you are experienced and conditioned lifter. Abs workout should be done at the end of each workout or you can do in one session in this order, lower abdominals than obliques and at the end rectus abdominals. Only athletes that are really good conditioned can perform abs before or during major complex lifts, and I have seen only few that can do that, and never wearing a weightlifting belt.

Thanks for the advice! I had been squatting around 100kg but always felt the fatigue in my lower back before my quads would ever come into the equation. I'm 6'6" and pretty mobile so felt that the depth of my squat was causing pelvic tilt that put strain on my back. Tried a belt and not only did the added IAP help keep my lower back neutral and supported but I also managed to bash out 5x 130kg reps and next day actually had DOMS in my quads for once. Same with my deadlift. Still to experiment with a belt on OHP and RDL but experiencing amazing feedback so far! 💪

I would still recommend belts for beginners whenever they are squatting, cleaning or deadlifting. The risk of injury is just too much for my preference. You can still go full ROM and not ego lift as a beginner with a belt. So if you need to learn to use a belt and get proper form with the belt, why not just start off with a belt if it is going to yield the same core strength over time; it's going to maximize local fatigue; and it will reduce the likelihood of injury.

Phenomenal video! Very comprehensive and detailed. I think a belt is a very good idea for those who are training at home and don’t have access to machines and don’t want their core to be a limiting factor. If someone is doing back squat for quads hypertrophy as the main priority then it’s a good idea to wear a belt and make quads the limiting factor as much as possible. The same can be said about bent over rows for upper back and stiff legged deadlifts for hamstrings. If you want to train your core through those movements then don’t use a belt but if you’re doing other exercises for the core like direct abdominal work and direct spinal erectors work then a belt can be extremely useful. 💪

I don't agree with everything here. I've been lifting for many years with no belt. However, I'm not as young as I used to be and my body doesn't always respond the way I expect. Also, someone who has been lifting 1+ years isn't a beginner in my view. Someone who has been lifting consistently for 1+ years with proper technique is far from a beginner. That said, beginners can benefit from a belt while they learn proper technique.

I saw the scariest reason against wearing a Velcro belt at this year's Dubai CrossFit Championship: watch Moritz Fiebig's first C&J. His belt flies off and lands behind his foot. During the split jerk, his foot narrowly missed stepping on the belt. Can you imagine having 150kg or so overhead and your back foot slides on a belt? I was SO glad it worked out ok, but I will not wear velcro for anything overhead.

I am familiar with leather belts as my dad used to beat me with it. Can I just use a powerlifting belt right away?
@BigBlueJake3 жыл бұрын
You could. These days powerlifting belts come in 10 mm and 13 mm thickness, and I've seen 4 inch wide belts that are "single thickness" like the Oly lifting/bodybuilding belts. Pioneer also makes 3 inch wide belts for women and people with short torsos and 2 inch belts guys mostly use to keep a bench shirt in place. "Knockoff brand" power belts are really cheap compared to competition powerlifting belts, so experimenting won't take as big of a chunk out of your wallet. You could start with a 10 mm, then move to a 13 mm if you decide you really want to lift heavy or compete. Some lifters like the 10 mm for deadlifts and use the 13 mm for squats. The 13 mm are the "bulletproof" ones Mike was referring to - I've got an old one you could pound nails with!
