I have been battling bulimia for years now and it's living hell. This information here is absolutely essential for breaking the binge - purge cycle, this is exactly what every single expert on EDs say and what my psychologists have told me. Sorry for how much you’ve had to struggle❤ I’ve had plenty of body issues, binged & restricted plenty of times, thankfully never went to purging but I had considered it many times. I’ve majorly overhauled my relationship with food over the last year and I’ve had very few binges, fewer and fewer as the months go by. Just keep working on not feeling that “this food is bad” or “I’m bad because I ate this or too much of this”, all diets work the same when controlled for protein and calories. That means ALL foods can be consumed in moderation within a diet to lose weight or just within a healthy maintenance lifestyle. That fact alone has helped me a ton, hope it helps you too!

I hope you are doing better and I am glad to hear you are seeking help and finding it also in this type of stuff. I always learned that the body digested most calories by the time it was down. Like 60%. So if a person binges they often come out in a surplus. Or people that do it with laxatives are digesting around 80%. I know the mentality goes beyond what science says though. This video, and also the "Getting Motivated To Lose Fat Through Dieting" video have been extraordinarily encouraging. These videos have been extremely relatable, and I find myself enjoying myself watching them because Dr. Mike just seems like a wholesome funny guy who wants to do good, the levity he brings to pretty complex and daunting concepts for someone especially my size makes me feel like it's gonna be all OK, like he said multiple times throughout this video "That is OK." About two months ago I began my journey to get into better shape for professional and personal reasons, I was 316 at my heaviest and I am now 308. It's not much but it's something, which is awesome. I work at a Sports Therapy clinic so I have access to a pretty amazing fitness facility and have been going for at least an hour for 5 days of the week. Hitting the weights mostly and also cardio. After reflection on my current eating habits, I'm probably around stage 3 Rough Macros, I have a range of protein I try to hit every day but don't pay SUPER close attention to total caloric intake. I've been eating healthier and less processed foods but.. I'll admit sometimes I still do ie eating out at a junk food place with the missus. My relationship with food still needs work for sure. I'll be starting the 1-3 month recommended / typical duration for this stage starting today and see if I can graduate to stage 4 by late July / early August. Great stuff Dr. Mike and cheers to everyone going through this process too. You got this.

This channel is pure gold! I would point, from my experience, that most of my eating "irregularities" and "diet fatigue" is directly correlated with my, at this point, chronic sleeping disorder (nobody to blame for it other then myself just to be clear) which not only creates irregular times when I'm hungry and want to eat, but makes me mentally weaker and I want junk food more. When my sleep quality is good, any decision in my dieting is easier (whether I'm cutting calories, increasing physical activity or just trying to generally eat healthy and in average maintenance). In 2 days my vacation starts.... I will use it to relax from my diet, get good sleep so to start my next macrocycle fresh and ready

Any restriction is probably just going to mess that up. I'll just stay the course unless I find my weight rising sharply.

I was struggling with what I thought was an eating disorder, which I had never struggled with beforehand. But understandably going from weighing all of my food out for years and being shredded, to not having a kitchen or fridge and gaining weight was a mind fuck and my body was fighting me. I was obsessed with food. I hated myself for not being able to follow my plan and having these intense urges that my mind was unable to control. This protocol gave me the tools and forgiveness to ease myself back into healthy eating by listening to my body and going with the flow. I recommend this video to any of my bodybuilding friends that are struggling with the reverse after an intense dieting phase. Thank you Dr Mike! 🙏🏼

On a less severe note, I like to take a couple weeks off from tracking every so often. Even for a nerd like me, tracking and accountability create some degree of stress, and it’s good to let that go now and then. Watching this video I realize I naturally did this for myself over 2022-2023, now I’m finally back in a full blown fat loss cycle. At my start I was 30% plus body fat, I cut down to 11% in 2020, started a bulk and then cut phase by 2021 and I was just sick of it all. Ate whatever the fuck I wanted 2022, tried to get back in to dieting but it just wouldn’t click for me. Worked out here and there, did cardio here and there and started structuring my meals better. By mid 2023 I finally locked in on the training and started loosely tracking, dropped from 279 in may to 245 in October only doing basic workouts in an apartment gym. Now I’m back in the real gym on a fat loss phase Dec - Feb and I’m hype doing my meals and lifting real weights. I’ll be ready for my first maintenance phase by March, that was the missing piece in the past. I just dieted with no end till I couldn’t stand it.

I wish this concept was more widely known. I originally found this with Stephanie Buttermore about 4 years ago. At the time that I found that, I thought there was something wrong with me. I had an extreme hunger issue, binge eating disorder, and the thought of dieting sent me into a tailspin anytime it was brought up. I used to be a personal trainer and while I'm certified in fitness and nutrition, I don't have a degree in the field. I followed everything I learned to the letter, and cut back my calories to 1,400 to 1,500 trying to lose the last bit of body fat while also lifting very heavy 6 days a week AND doing cardio an hour a day. I was exhausted all the time and frustrated with my body for not showing any progress. I ended up in an office job and stopped training and all those eating disorders just destroyed my body. Doing this to fix my issues with food and dieting saved me so much. It took two years to reverse what extreme dieting and overworking my body did to my relationship with food and to my metabolism. I really love that more people are talking about this.

I was bulking and trying to consume 4K calories a day on a 5’4 frame weighing 140lbs was very difficult. Force feeding every day made me miserable. Thx for ton of knowledge dr Mike.

At that height and weight, 3000-3500 would probably be enough - a 500 calorie surplus is more than enough to get good long term gains without much fat. In some situations you may want to have up to a 1000 surplus, but it's never necessary.
@ducdu41362 жыл бұрын
@@classypotato9255 i know you just basing that on my size and for most that would be true and good advice. I have a physical jobs that required me to work 60 hours a week and walk 12 miles a day plus i was working out 4 times week thats why my calories had to be that high to put on mass. I'm happy at my current weight 125lbs and no longer force feeding :)

Doing a reset currently, just started after seeing this video because I have been severely struggling with deciding what I want out of my diet and the relentless grief and stress its causing me is just too much to go forwards. I’ve dropped 90lbs, I think its time I give myself a little room to breathe.

Thank you for this video. I feel very uplifted knowing that I’m already in phase 3. I struggled with an ED and depression for a VERY long time. I probably should’ve gotten professional help at some point, but I’m in a much better place now and videos like this are really encouraging and educational.

This was so helpful and timely. Being an amateur boxing with no real off season and constantly attempting to get to a lower weight with no deliberate break, I can definitely relate to this level of diet fatigue. Looking forward do doing this!

Love this talk so much. This is exactly what I’m going through at the moment. I am training for a natural show (my first). My last stubborn area is the back of my thighs, and I know it’s because of my diet. I think God was on my side because I’ve been in a rabbit hole of information regarding processed foods. We all know processed foods are bad for us. They were created in a time where we were trying to stave off starvation through innovation. Then we adopted these GMO foods into our normal day to day diet not understanding that it’s not real food. I grew up on the stuff, and I attribute my adult ailments today to the effects of that diet. All in all, old habits die hard, but with a goal, an understanding that whole foods are what we are supposed to be eating anyway, we realize we are only cheating ourselves eating crap. Thanks for your channel. You really are raw in your delivery, sometimes to a point where I truly see your vulnerabilities. They are so relatable.

This is incredible content. I was a counselor working with some younger colleagues a few years back, and the camp meals were mostly fast food-adjacent crap, and I was getting salad and tuna every day. One of the teenagers I worked with asked me, “do you eat that because you enjoy it, or because you know it’s healthy?” I remember thinking about it for a moment and telling him, “I eat it because it’s good for me, and it makes me feel good, and because of that, I also enjoy it.” That blew him away while he munched on his chicken tenders.

Great great video. I have been sort of naturally doing this but my change to ability to diet came really abruptly. One day I stepped on the scale and felt so low all day because it had gone up. Then watched your motivation for fat loss video.. wrote out a plan (which correlates with stage 3 of this video.. 12 week plan.. 30 mins walking in the morning, rough estimate macros for 3 meals and 2 snacks, 5 days a week hypertrophy) 4 weeks in.. and have found it all almost a breeze ever since.. it relaxed me so much to know exactly what my plan is.. I discovered the relaxing nature of having a little structure, instead of making on the spot decisions..Thanks so much Dr Mike

I have inadvertently been doing this process for nearly a year now after being in a pretty rough space mentally with food. Took ~3 months to get through the first phase, and am currently at the tail end of the second/ maybe the beginning of the third phase. Feeling much better overall, both mentally and physically although I know there is still a ways to go. Just have to stay strong and remember that my worth doesn’t lie in how I look. Thank you for contextualizing this process Dr. Mike, and for your level of compassion around the subject! Your videos and other resources have helped greatly!

I wish I could have liked this video multiple times. The message is delivered logically, as it builds up arguments and facts to make it feel less and less scary to actually consider dieting. It's wholesome, it's great!

This is a phenomenal video, and the bit about seeing a psychological professional is a necessary caveat that so many people skip over. Personal experience: An unrestricted eating phase led me to gain 50 pounds in 8 months, despite it not feeling particularly like binge eating; I ended up with a diagnosis of ADHD at age 27. Turns out as a sober teetotaler i was getting my easy dopamine rushes from having food delivered (the excitement of a variety of food choices + looking forward to a delivery arriving), which led to serious financial and physical consequences. Once appropriately medicated I’ve been able to register satiety signals again and naturally get tired of unrestricted eating after a week or two, and it’s so refreshing to have a functional relationship with nutrition again, along with the energy to work out.

This video has made how i've been feeling for the past 12 months finally make sense. I did a very strict cut for 6 months and then completely went into "nope - fuck this" mode, constantly feeling wary of restriction whilst at the same time continually thinking I "should" be in a cut. Working with a coach we decided to go into maintenance mode which has been effective... but my mindset was constantly thinking i "should be" cutting... and i'm still feeling totally wary of anything that looks like restriction. Watching this totally validated exactly how i was feeling but couldn't verbalise. "the very act of logging and tracking feels like a psychological burden... it's almost like PTSD" 👈🏽 thiiiiiiiis. I can see now I went from total burnout, to phase 4 which maintained the underlying issue. Thanks so much for this Dr Mike you stud.

I needed this video. Negative body image? Check. Mental anguish from a highly restrictive diet? Check. I sat anxiously for an hour and a half wrestling the desire to eat a Crumbl cookie because I knew it was at least 500 calories (my typical meal is about 450-500 cal). I ate the cookie, but the fact that I immediately thought I should skip dinner because of it is not good.

I just discovered Dr Mike and I'm a recent subscriber. I absolutely love his content! Unbeknownst to me I have fallen naturally into this four phase system on my own! I went through a divorce over 2 years ago and as with a lot of big life transitions I kind of just said screw it and ate whatever I wanted to eat for about 12-18 mo's. Now I would say for the bulk of this year I have slowly been walking through this process and I'm happy to say that I currently believe I'm in phase 4. I don't think I've ever been this dedicated to a diet in the past, i. e. tracking and logging...I'm glad to say that after many years of binge eating and demonizing certain food groups that I now feel like I am in a psychologically better relationship with food and I'm excited to get into the next diet phase of my health journey!
