That's what I do, in addition to beef jerky. For the quest/legendary stuff I takes advantage of GNC sales and the occasional Amazon sale. I'll buy jerky in bulk from Costco. The Oikos high protein/low calorie yogurts are also incredible and are sometimes a dollar each at ShopRite.

Filming is “quick” it’s often editing that takes a long time. I don’t know what an industry average is now but a bit over a decade ago when I edited sports educational content it was about 20 hours of editing for an hour of content. DVD mastering was then another fun aspect of that time 😂. Even with props and whatnot we could film three features in a long day. Editing and production was a couple work weeks after that.

I'm glad that he brought up how your body is feeling this time. He usually says "diet 12 weeks and then maintenance" but just like anything else, it's better to listen to your body's signals. Just think of every week you diet as a rep, and do what you can. Are you still losing weight? Are you doing ok at work? At the gym? Are you sleeping ok? How do your joints feel? How many "cravings tips" have you used in the last week? All of this is more important than the calendar. If you're losing weight and feeling ok and not too sore at the gym and sleep is fine and your joints are good and you've only used a couple diet tips in the last week... KEEP GOING. Lose those easy pounds while your pantry is full of protein and you've already cleared out all the snacks. You're 20 reps in reserve, don't stop now. Finish the set. Yes it's hard. You know what else is hard? Squats. Bench press... All of this is hard. Do it anyway. Then check in again next week. "Am I doing ok or am I tired? Why am I sore? Am I even still losing weight? Did I really need to pound 4 sixpacks of club sodas this week to keep going?" And when you get to that point you have to be honest with yourself and figure out how many "reps" you have in reserve. And the biggest thing DON'T GET UPSET ABOUT FAILURE. Failure isn't a bad thing. When you're doing a set of squats and you fail at 8 reps, do you get upset and say F this and never squat again? No, you rack, you rest, maybe adjust the load if you're not hitting your targets and do another set. Or if you really overdid it, you rack, rest, and come back next week and do another set. Your squat didn't fail, you squatted to failure. Your diet didn't fail, you dieted to failure. Breathe, drink some water and a protein shake, and start again when you're ready. It's so interesting to see a group of people, bodybuilders, who will "train to failure bro, then do another rep bro, then do partial reps bro, then drop set bro" But when it comes to diet they just give up "I gained half a pound last week, total failure bro" No, stop. Rack, deload, eat maintenance for a couple weeks, and go again. Or just let it ride. "I only lost half a lb instead of a lb last week" GREAT drop-set. Do another week of that and then you'll have coasted right into maintenance without even trying.

Great advice! I do feel like some disturbance in sleep is to expected at the tail-end of a heavy deficit and push performance will almost always suffer regardless of how well you manage stress and sleep but I agree with everything you said. Take a break and go at it again is probably one of the best ways to go about it for most
@JC-fj7oo
@JC-fj7oo Ай бұрын
@@pierrea3094 that's just it, it's always going to be hard. If it was easy everybody would be shredded. That's why it's so important to use other things as a gauge. If your muscles sore, good. Sore joints are usually a bad sign. Tired at the end of the gym? Awesome. Exhausted halfway through the work day? Probably need to change something.

One thing ive learned on my weight loss journey is to not deprive myself. Be aware of your daily calorie intake and keep yourself in that deficit. I have no issues shifting my calories around for the day if I got friends that want to eat out but be aware of calories you're bringing in with that meal. I look at the labels on everything now and make myself very aware of the serving sizes that can be deceptive.
@chocolatebear333

@JC-fj7oo Ай бұрын
@@bennachtigall4784 not eating when you're not hungry is huge. I hear that one so often: "I only have 800 calories for dinner and she wants to go to Olive garden" Why did you only leave 800 calories for dinner? "I ate a whole bunch of XYZ for breakfast" Are you hungry in the morning? "Nope" If I'm not hungry for breakfast I don't eat it. Get hungry before lunch, have a protein bar, protein is filling. With just a little bit of restraint on lunch, I can end up with 1500 to 2k calories to maintenance on dinner. Heck I'm having breadsticks, lasagna and a glass of wine or two.

@@JC-fj7oo i did 2 hours of cardio, when i really wanted to lose fat. + single slice of pizza from most fast food places is like 250 not 500 lol. If its 500 its likely more filling. @8:08 "is your family intellectually deficient?" yeah, kinda. one of the biggest hurdles is understanding how 1 meal can ruin a weeks worth of work, calorically. MANY people do not understand this. on top of, many people are not very good at taking in new information. which isnt to say theyre stupid, ignorant, or incapable. theyre just in a cycle of habitual autopilot and arent very good at learning, as a skill. so the question "cant you just have one cookie?" becomes very difficult to make people understand. with all that being said, it becomes time to teach them. but overall, definitely still annoying.

I would add that you can bulk prep incognito healthy snacks for them to keep in the freezer, which you can sub in for a meal in a pinch if you’re short on time. This also gives you something to reach for other than your kids Doritos when you wake up starving at 3 AM.

@@ykonratev i don't think you understand how food waste works my guy. If you have your meals planned out, your food is prepped and you're all set for a week -someone randomly dropping off enough food to feed a small army is not only counterproductive to your goals, it also means that a whole lot of food is just not getting eaten and will ultimately have to be thrown out. i know that it's coming from a place of kindness, but again, it'll either sit there, tempting you while you're hungry as fuck, trying to watch your food intake and it's getting thrown out, or it's setting you back on your goals to try and live a healthier life and it's not like i haven't talked to her about it. i did. multiple times. all she has to do on her end is just not do it

@@critterstewart How consistent is this? If it's literally every week start planning around it, means you'll be eating roast every weekend and won't waste as much food. Or try and pitch it to your mum as food waste, ladies around mum age tend to care about that stuff a lot. Even if she doesn't stop (maybe she really enjoys cooking for her son which very sweet and I don't know about you but I couldn't take that away from my mum) she might give you a bit of a heads up so you don't have to waste food :)

Calorie budgeting and actually reading labels is what worked for me. I never realized how bad those 3 oreos can mess up your budget for the day. How many calories a bag of chips actually has. How bad a bowl of cereal at night is. Is the thing I'm eating worth the calories? No? Then don't eat it. I dont really deprive myself of anything. I eat pizza sometimes. I'll eat a burger sometimes, I'll eat fried chicken sometimes. But I will eat much less during the rest of the day to make sure I can indulge when I want to. And instead of eating 4 slices, I will eat two. Instead of a full cookie, I'll eat half. Instead of a full scoop of ice cream, I will eat one or two spoonfulls. It's enough to satisfy my cravings and allows me to reset and focus on clean eating the rest of the week. From 224 lbs in January, I'm down to 180 lbs yesterday. This is the second time I've lost this much weight. The first time was easier because I was single and didn't have kids. But I'm optimistic that this time, I have a much healthier approach to my diet so that I'm not starving myself and able to keep it off. Edit: be wary of DRINKS. Do not drink your calories. And sauces. They are killer

Not sure if you will see this Mike but just wanna say your podcast on semaglutide has changed my life. I’m currently taking tirzepatide privately in the uk and your right. My bandwidth to do things is so much higher because I am not thinking about food all the time. Because I’m eating the same relatively healthy foods each day and being able to get enough protein in because my fats and carbs from uncontrollable hunger aren’t too high. My life has changed. My energy from my new healthier diet is so good and I’m finally back in the gym. As a prison officer working sometimes 13 hour shifts having this has changed my life and given me so much more of an ability to control my hunger and cravings. Thanks Mike hearing your testimony to it helped me so much. Mitch.

PRO-TIP OF THE YEAR: For maintenance get yourself a doctor's scale. You see them at goodwill or whatever for a song, check ebay, do what you need to do to get a sliding scale. (Or just make a sliding object with some kind of craft supplies and move it manually) then what you need to do is take two pieces of tape. Put one at the lowest weight you want to be. Put one at the highest weight you want to be. See where this is going? When you weigh yourself every day yes, just do it... The sliding weight will give you a visual representation of your weight. And actually moving the slider up and down means that you will see and feel the direction of the weight change. IF you're pushing it up and it's getting near the high tape, it's time to cut back. If you're getting near the bottom tape, up the calories a bit. Then you don't have to track and log your weight. You can physically see where the slider is and move it. It doesn't matter what you weighed last month, if you're between the tape lines, you're happy. If you're near the tape lines, fix it. More calories, less calories, life isn't that complicated. That doesn't mean it's easy.

@JC-fj7oo

@@TyaColo if you're having a erectile dysfunction, losing a bunch of weight it's actually a good way to fix that... I'm assuming you actually meant eating disorder. And no. This is actually how you treat eating disorders Telling someone just diet for 12 weeks no matter what, only teaches people how to starve themselves for 12 weeks. What you need to do is get them to learn how to understand their body's natural signals again. Because if someone is able to diet and they aren't affecting their work, their gym/lifts, their joints, they feel okay and aren't getting sick, and they aren't having to cheat or rely heavily on "tricks"... Then they don't have an eating disorder anymore. But if it's someone is dealing with a serious eating disorder or really any mental illness, then they just need to add "check in with a therapist/doctor/family" to that weekly checklist.

@@TyaColo It's actually how we treat eating disorders. By teaching people how to set a healthy weight range and give visual representation to how their diet is affecting their body so they can make gradual changes without needing to resort to dangerous crash diets and such. Plus I will add that if you have a severe disorder, you don't need a pro-tip, you need medical advice. And bodybuilding is probably the wrong sport. Just saying.
@TyaColo
@TyaColo Ай бұрын
@@JC-fj7oo I hear what you’re saying, but I still think it’s a valid concern to bring up because, as someone who went through this exact process, ultimately even if people with EDs should seek professional medical advice that’s not always what happens, and many will look online in places such as this for information and try to implement it themselves which, unsupervised could lead some to get addicted to the realization that they have the power to control their weight and swing too far in the opposite direction. So not trying to poo-poo your advice just trying to add a note that may be helpful for some :) have a good one

8:39 in the case of visiting family, lot of times that's holidays. Maybe don't plan your diet to go thru thanksgiving dinner. Plan your bulk for then, or plan to go into maintenance just before the first big get together then treat the big feasts as little mini bulks so you can enjoy the goods stuff and your not necessarily full up on proteins shakes and bars but your also not starving and actively restricting yourself cuz you're dieting cuz you decided to cut during sweater season any way 🤷‍♀️🤷🤦‍♂️

Mike said once that eating bland food helps you on a diet as it prevents overeating, but I find more success cooking delicious food as it stops me from craving more caloric food and the stuff my family keeps trying to feed me on a cut. It's a calculated trade-off. For me I don't overeat the food I cook, bc cooking is a pain and I'm lazy. If I eat all of it, I need to make more.

An issue I now have after successfully cutting last year and struggling to do it again this year, is that I never really stop eating the foods I use to cut. So I always feel like I'm restricting. But it's hard to stop because they are foods I can easily eyeball to maintain or eat at a surplus. I get especially sick of them while restricting. I go into a cut not simply removing fun or junk food, just eating less of what I already eat in my clean diet.

Couple of things I would add: 1. If I’m eating with friends family etc (I.e. having a bit of a blowout) I’ll usually estimate how much I ate afterwards and compensate by eating lower calories for the next 1-2 days afterwards - or reduce beforehand so I know I’ve got a spare 4-600 calories I can use to go over for that meal (still make up the difference afterwards). Anyway It doesn’t matter if 1 day is bad, the average intake over several days is more important 2. Eating out at restaurants - many (especially the chain restaurants) have nutritional information available (usually calories), either on the menu or website so you can make choices from that. I have been known to look at the menu online before going out... Also don’t forget to have zero calorie or low calorie drinks on the side - I’ll often have a glass of Prosecco to kick off and get in the mood (it’s 90 calories a glass) then switch to Coke Zero and black coffee for the rest of the meal… as beers and alcohol can quickly kill a diet… 3. Alcoholic drinks can ruin your diet (unless they make you throw up a lot)

I was 140kg, now I'm between 80-85 kg, dropped 40kg in the first year, 20 kg in the second year and been pretty much stable between 80-85 kg for 1 year now. The biggest struggle I had at the beginning was definitely saying "no, thanks" to family and friends whenever they offered me snacks, drinks etc. it took a lot of effort in the beginning but it definitely got easier espeically because now nobody asks me, they know if I want something I'm going to ask instead. The second biggest struggle was cravings. I switched from softdrinks to zero alternatives but you have to keep in mind that zero alternatives always increase your cravings, if you know that you can work around cravings a little bit. I learned that eating vegetables like broccoli and high protein foods (or just protein shakes) reduces my cravings. After dropping below 90kg I personally made the rule that I will eat more or less whatever I want whenever I'm invited to friends or visit the family because this just makes life easier. In our culture it's pretty normal to serve just normal seasoned (without sauce) chicken back(+wing attached) instead of chicken wings or chicken nuggets so it's usually not a bad alternative. Usually after I eat things that are not part of my diet it increases my cravings a lot for the next 1-3 days. In the beginning I really struggled with that a lot giving in to those cravings regularily but in the last 6 months I found out how I can fight against that. When I change to water instead of zero softdrinks on the very first day after "breaking" the diet I usually struggle way less and when the cravings turn out to be really strong I just drink a protein shake. Also, when I know I'm going to eat out on sundays I make sure that I go grocerie shopping on saturday and buy enough food that I won't have to go grocerie shopping for the next 4 days because going grocerie shopping while your cravings kick it definitelly makes you buy things. Gatherings with family and friends mostly happen in summer (basically every week) while in winter they mostly happen during christmas time, that's why I decided to basically diet all the time. During summer I either maintain or gain weight while during winter I drop most of it (gain a bit on christmas though).

1) I tend to take containers with me to restaurants and prior to eating my meal, I dish out everything that's surplus into the takeaway box, leaving on my plate only what I consider a healthy portion. Leftovers just look better if they don't look all messed up and eaten out of. When it comes to the chips at a Mexican restaurant, I decided that 15 is my limit, so I pull a dozen out onto a napkin, allow myself all the salsa I want, and then I have 3 "just one more" chips I can access throughout the meal that aren't cheating. 2) My boss used to try and bribe me with Oreos ( yuck), until one day she introduced me to baby carrots - never had them before. After that, she would try and bring healthy snacks to see what else worked. I love a work situation where people want to treat their friends, but I think it would benefit everyone if the food was limited to a certain area or day so you could more easily avoid temptation. Something as simple as not using a glass jar for the desk candy helps. 3) This is why I hate telling anyone I'm dieting. I'm in the south so they expect you to say no at least 3 times when offered something before you finally take it. "I've got gum in my mouth/ just had a mint/ feeling a bit ick" usually gets them to leave you alone after just one or 2 offers, but if they know you're dieting, they take it as a personal challenge - "my food's so good and irresistible, I'll break her!" As for my spouse, I let him know it was his responsibility to help me, otherwise he was killing me. 4) see above, plus, become a master of the napkin removal. Family will legit shove food in your mouth unexpected. For seasonal family meals where there will be a lot of traditional favorites (as in, you know what to expect) plan that day's food accordingly. Eat very low calorie but bulky foods (veg) for your other meals. Ask yourself prior to the event what you are most looking forward to and what you can do without/get any other time, and plan your meal around it. You can also volunteer to bring a healthy option, but some people will avoid it on principle. 5) feed your kids better. As a former child of obese parents, please, give them some healthier options and teach them what healthy habits are. Teach your kids early how to cook and prepare healthy foods, help them make better choices, get them involved in making menu decisions. Best week of my childhood was when school taught us about nutrition and homework was preparing a balanced meal for the family. I say week, because that's about how long my parents tolerated a kid telling them how to eat right. 6) I'm 30 months into a health/fitness/diet journey and thought I was immune to burnout as I have never forbidden myself anything. From the start, I promised myself I'd not make any changes I can't live with for at least 20 years and while I do try to limit my calories, fats, and carbs, I focus more on reaching my protein and fiber goals and eating a large variety of vegetables. I've had such a rough time sticking to it this last month for no real reason, that I upped my calorie allotment just to keep me from cheating and not tracking. We'll see. 8) I've been measuring stuff so long, I can guess how much peanut butter is on the spoon within 2 grams, but every month or so, I remeasure the stuff I eyeball (mostly just the milk for my coffee) just to make sure I'm still accurate. Knowing the volume of your dishes is the greatest hack to avoid constantly measuring stuff. Many of my serving spoons hold 1/2 cup - perfect for sides - and my favorite bowls hold 1 cup when you leave room to hold the edge with your thumb. 9) Knowing why you want to eat something is the first step to controlling reckless eating, but even so, it's hard to avoid. 10) The one meaningful thing I heard in WW was "it's a lifestyle." Well their plan as a lifestyle sucks, but adopting a healthy relationship with food and a "diet" plan you can live with is my goal. As I said previously, I've consistently thought about "can I do this for the next 20 years?" whenever I've thought about my food and exercise. Obviously, I'm not at the end of my weight loss phase yet, but the fact I've been going strong for nearly 30 months before I struggled says I'm well on my way to developing a healthy lifestyle.

What broke me of it was Carnivore? Don't jump down my throat. Eggs and steak with butter and salt is pretty much all I eat. I swap out chicken when my body feels like it needs less fat. It is weird when you stop eating crap, how you can actually feel your body and how the things you put into it, effects it. Down 50 pounds. Best shape I've ever been in at 41 years.
