What's the location of the crankshaft sensor?

It depends on the type of engine your Clio has. My is on the side of the engine facing the battery and the fuse box.

Without an OBD 2 diagnostic reader you are just guessing as to why the car won't start.

Not exactly. In case of broken sensor You don't have a spark and there is no injection. Pull out spark plug with coil to check if there's a spark. And in case there's no smell of fuel ejected via spark plug port it's almost for sure crankshaft sensor as it gives the info about position when to inject fuel and when to create spark. Without it's pulses nothing happens. Resistance of coil of good sensor should be in the range 240-300ohm. Usually if sensor is broken there's open circuit instead of coil.
