Looking for a used Renault Clio RS? - carsforsale.com.au/renault/clio
The French have an incredibly rich history of creating some of the best hot hatches the motoring world has ever seen. Simultaneously, though, French cars have quite the poor reputation for longevity and reliability.
That’s why the Renault Clio RS is such an interesting car to review. Is it worthy of the hot hatch hype? Or is it another in the long list of forgettable French cars?
Head to KZbin to find out!

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

Phase 2 220 Trophy european owner here. Engine is bulletproof, just service it under 10k km and put the best fuel you can (98+) since you don't have a replaceable fuel filter. EDC gearbox is way better in phase 2 (after 2017), buy you should change it's oil every 30-50k km, it's not much like ~2L of oil and quick job. Invest in good tyres, Michellin Pilot Sport 4 for summer and w/e you pick in winter. Good upgrades if you have some money to spend: Bilstein B14/PSS coilovers will fix most of the harsher ride, due to better shocks for the bumps, a set is about 1.5k euro and front Brembo 4 pot calipers for about 800 euro (they are Gen 3 Clio RS ones).

@@alexanderdanielsson6049 yes they are good for spirited daily driving. Only issues to look out for are wiper linkages are common for seizing and snapping, lower radiator hose clamp corrodes and bursts due to sitting on the subframe so keep an eye on coolant levels or replace the clamp straight away. Boost pipe into the throttle body is plastic and prone to snapping but airtec do stainless steel replacements. The cars are good with a map from a reputable tuner that knows how to tune these cars but the clutch pack is the limiting factor when it comes to power as can't get an uprated one

I am so glad you did this review 👏 I remember back when this came out, I thought they looked superb in liquid yellow. I was shopping it against the Polo GTI (both were unavailable to test drive at the time) The Fiesta ST was manual only and I really wanted something with paddle shifters. I thought both Clio RS and the Megane RS were great value on the used car scene. But dam I see they have their quirks too...But as for the Megane 🔥🔥 I am almost willing to live with it and learn to drive manual properly 😀

Thanks for the review guys much appreciated! I test drove one recently the sport clio rs 2015 and I actually thought the suspension was surprisingly comfortable.! Also I know you mentioned there are more sensible alternatives but assuming your after an auto theres really only this and the polo gti in the mini hatch segment and the polo gti of similar year from reviews was said to not handle as sharply, doesn't sound as good and has firmer suspension (although it has a nicer more logical interior!) Also Fun fact there appears to be this hack that if you plug a cable into your obd theres like a way to unlock android auto even in the earlier models 2013 onwards on the stock infotainment

Thanks for the good review. I've a 2014 RS200 Cup Premium which has done 85k km's since purchased in 2015. All services through authorised Renault dealers & I've never used the launch control or tracked it. Notwithstanding that this car is so much fun to drive around the burbs and the recent discovery of the Clio V6 soundtrack has added further to my enjoyment (Nissan GTR soundtrack was OK for a while, but got boring). Other then the occasionally clunky & slow infotainment system and a gearbox that has gone missing a few times (less than 5 times over ownership period, and then it just needed a turn off and re-start) there's not been a problem. No squeaks/rattles. No sunroof. The car is firm riding, not hard (or crashy), unlike the Ford Fiesta ST which I was going to buy until I took one on an extended test drive. I almost needed a kidney belt and new teeth. The RS200 was a godsend. Vive la Clio!

Always thought the French could design a lovely looking car, usually nice to drive but built to a budget. I always found French cars do not take hard high mileage well and tend to need things like wheel bearings, drive shafts and steering racks sooner than other Vehicles in the same price bracket from say Korea or Japan. The Megane RS is a weapon, Peugeot have always made a nice fast hot hatch. I think French car unreliability is greatly exagerated, Italian or English is far worse 🤣.

I can only talk from limited experience, but I owned an espace that went 350k km without any problem (obv some parts like belts and other subjected to use were changed) and I have a panda with 29 years on the back still with her original clutch. Now I own a Clio RS3 and running smoothly so far. I think the reliability issues are mostly concerned in 20+ years old car, nowadays I find them pretty reliable
@nk53nxg
@nk53nxg 2 жыл бұрын
@@micheledallalba8950 if you have a 29 year old Panda on the original clutch that probably says more about your driving style not being hard on the vehicle. I have had vehicles that have done very high miles/km on original clutch because I lived in the countryside, if I lived in the town with lots of stop start driving I would need a clutch much sooner. The French always made interesting design vehicles where as the Germans were usually quite conservative. English and Italian cars are lovely to look at and drive, but just tend to have shocking electrics and expensive to fix.

Completely agree that reliability issues are greatly exaggerated. I've owned a number of Renaults over a period of about 20 years. Apart from a scenic requiring a new electric steering motor and a Clio 172 developing a a bit of a 3rd gear crunch after years of being driven hard, I've only ever had to replace maintenance items

60k in my phase 2 RS Cup, no issues whatsoever. High quality servicing at good prices and great warranty. Managing 5.8ltrs / 100 on average. One point of note is that the 1.6 turbo engine is actually a NISMO built one and very robust. Brilliant quality to the paint finish and panel gaps as new also, so anything less than perfect would be a big red flag.

Mate I wish I'd had the same experiences. I've personally owned a Peugeot 206 GTi 180, Megane RS 225 and 265 and all cost me a fortune in maintenance. All were incredible to drive but all were unreliable and cost substantially more than other (Japanese and South Korean) cars to maintain and repair. Plus with the amount of research we did for this video, even though I'm always tempted to buy another Megane RS or hot Peugeot, the reliability reports, customer satisfaction surveys and numbers from parts suppliers and Euro specialist mechanics don't lie. - AK

@@pastorofmuppets8834 The 206 was new, and was a mess of endless issues plus the after sales support was pathetic. 225 I was the second owner but the first owner was one of my best friends. That cost me nearly $10k in issues and repairs. 265 was the best of the bunch but even it just had disappointing problems from new. Trim falling off, drivers seat became rattly, some ECU gremlins, loads of small things, all resolved by Renault but compared to say an i30N, (which I've long term tested 3 of), the regular niggling problems became infuriating. All superb cars to drive and exude that French cool factor which the likes of Hyundai and Mazda can't match but honestly, an i30N is 99% as good to drive but unlike my French car experiences, they just refuse to break, and I've tried to break them! - AK

I have a 2016 renault clio GT that I absolutely fuck driving around the country here in New Zealand. She has a sunroof which doesn't have any issues and gets serviced often. Only run her on 95 or 98 and her engine and everything is fine. In traffic her gearbox when not in RS mode likes to upshift and try and rear end the car in front. I run her on RS the entire time and her fuel usage is terrible around 12L/100km in my normal driving but I get it for free so doesn't effect me. Such a fun little car and not too bad on the insurance side for a young driver. I just traded my 2014 Monaco GP and I'm missing it dearly. Every time I pressed the start button I would smile. After four years of ownership and 40,000 km a year I had no real problems - just a few weird things happen. Yes, RS Sport telemetry (and all Android on board entertainment system) can be laggy at times. I only managed to do one free update on the system and TomTom based GPS maps. The rear spoiler skin did let go at 100km/h too. Spotted it in the air in the mirrors and went back to luckily find it on the verge - completely intact. 3M body tape to the rescue. Black-out roof was poorly done (and on all Renaults from what I have seen). Soft pads and rotors are the only thing to watch. That is the price you pay for that incredible braking power. Not as bad as an RS3, but don't ever expect to machine the rotors. Oil/filter every 10,000 km and give it some welly every now and then and enjoy.

Ce n'est pas un croissant. I had a 2013 sport - the auto-changing modes were poorly calibrated: cruise mode was sluggish, sport mode would sit in 3rd at 50-60km/h, never shift up. I've got a phase 2 cup now - gearbox ecu is calibrated properly, can just cruise around town in auto-mode without having to touch the paddles. Ph1 blue tooth was a POS, seems to be fixed in Ph2.

#1 rule for not spending a fortune on a used car: buy a manual. #2: get one with less than 100,000 miles. #3: You're used car that has 70,000+ miles is going to have things that wear out/break. It is a fact of life with cars. Just make sure it isn't the engine/ trans. If you go in knowing these few things, plus make sure you check the oil after driving it, check the oil cap for sludge etc, check underneath for rust, check the coolant reservoir for discoloration, use test drive to check the clutch feel. Do these things and you're almost guaranteed to at least feel like you haven't been ripped off.

The RS Clio is a fantastic car. I bought a new Liquid Yellow Clio RS 200 cup in 2014 after 45000 perfect trouble free miles in 2018 i bought a new black with black pack RS 220 trophy after 4 years of trouble free ownership i still enjoy this real Drivers car it's practical for commuting/shopping or going for a blast down a twisty road. Use V Power and give this car a Remap and they fly, the handling and grip is awesome, the paddle shift twin clutch is the way to go, yes one of the first small hot hatches to use a twin clutch. But they are the way to go you have normal mode sport mode and race mode, where you can use the paddles for lightning quick gear changes up or down far quicker and smoother than an old fashioned manual stick box which these days are old hat. I took the Fiesta ST Peugeot gti etc out for a test drive, but for me it's the Clio RS. Just look at most super cars they are now nearly all twin clutch paddle shift Nissan GTR McLaren Ferrari Audi R8 rs3 Lambo Merc A45 amg etc.

That oil interval change is in kilometres or miles? I'm from Romania and work in Switzerland, and I want to buy a car from Switzerland, I'm a Renault fan and want a Laguna II in good condition, it's around 4000-5000 Swiss francs; the big problem is with the oil interval change, here is at 30-35 000 km and 2-3-4 years, man that oil interval is way too long, I don't know what to do, maby go to Germany and buy from there, or France.
