Hot or not?
Robert spent a week driving the new Renault Zoe GT line R135 and he found something remarkable - it's faster than a Tesla… Well kinda.
Given a set of specific parameters, yes the Renault is a lot faster to charge, domestically, if you've got the right input.
But that's about it. Anyway, Robert gives the low down on his thoughts on this top of the range model. Is it really with being an ‘R’ model. How hot is it?
We couldn't keep making the show without our supporters, thank you all!

Thanks for a great video we got our ze50 gt line r135 lol . 4 months ago and done 6800 miles and love it ! Best we had out of Zoe is 256 miles on one charge on mixed trips and best I got in mid summer on flat 25 miles trip was 6.8 miles per kWh! Regularly get 220-240 even 230 miles on motorway in summer. Last week or so getting less about mid 4s to early 5 s and at 60_65 mph in wind and rain with climate control on 22c auto motorway trip of 155 miles and had 60 mikes left got 4.4 miles per kWh that was good I think.

Brake disc rust, so they need constant daily use to keep them clean and efficient, that means using them at least once a day, otherwise you risk failing stopping altogether, or at a much longer distance than if they were clean! That’s your lesson in engineering for today!

When I was still allowed out I was getting around 150 miles range from my ZE40 at night and 5-10 degrees C. In summer I get 180-190 miles range. I would hope the ZE50 would therefore be close to 240 miles in the summer. It does all depend on where you drive and how fast you go of course. The speed limits on my regular jouneys have all been reduced to the point where 0-60 isn't legal on them (dual carriageways now 50 mph limits to reduce pollution and other roads reduced from 60 to 40).

@@AngelKsiezyca bit late for me to reply, but just in case it’s helpful for you or anyone else reading this, you can heat the ZOE whilst charging, by using the preheat function (either keyfob or programme, but programme seems to last longer). GT Line is just the top trim level, you can get the R135 at other points in the range. Big advantage of the GT Line is you get the large screen included. This includes android auto/ apple car play which isn't included in the rest of the range! We were unaware of this when we put our order in for an Iconic spec Zoe and by the time we found out it was too late to change. It's gonna be a bugger having a brand new car without modern connectivity.

Thanks, Rob. Just got my RT Line. Told my wife I am self-isolating in it. Why? Because the Renault dealer handover went like this. "Please sign here. Thanks. Here are the keys. Goodbye. We are closing and I've got the sack." So, it's just me and the Zoe and the manual. All good as most things are intuitive. Can't access the My Renault app as Renault have screwed up unless you are in any country except the UK. Everything works! No preconditioning on the key fob, unlike the 40kw version. So, this is programmed from the very responsive touch screen but a bit of a bugger if you change your plans last minute from the set schedule. Otherwise, my nought to sixty was a good bit quicker than yours. And now I don't want to get out and mix with non-Zoe people. Merci.

I believe earlier Teslas allowed 22 kW charging on three-phase, but they stopped doing that, presumably to save some money. Here in Norway, everyone has three-phase, but our Leaf does not have three-phase charging, and it's kinda a bummer that it cannot utilise it
@KresimirKos
@KresimirKos 4 жыл бұрын
Other cars have separate chargers which take space and are heavy - and for three phases / more power they would be even bigger, heavier and more expensive. That's why they have 7kW charger max as a compromise (1 phase, 32A). On the other side, Zoe is using patented (so others can't copy) chameleon technology without additional charger: it's using existing motor and controller for charging. Since the motor is already three phases and controller can use motor as generator in regenerative braking - it's rather simple for it to use three phase AC charging. This is the reason why Zoe (and maybe Tesla?) can charge on full 22kW power of standard Type2 charging station.

Technically the older Tesla Model S had dual chargers with 22kW charging. There is an eco mode hope you wasnt in that mode 🤦‍♂️ Also you forgot to mention the new Zoe is made from mostly all recyclable materials, The older Zoe 22kWh did 0-60 in 13.8 the R110 11.5 and the R135 says 9.5 but as we know red light grandprix races most EVs win due to instant power and no gear changing. Just saying. You forgot to mention about its lane keep assist, 360 deg sensors, auto park, traffic sign recognition, led headlights, led rear lights, rear discs now, improved suspension, wireless phone charging, 4 USB ports, ota updates, A little more in depth instead of a drive would have been better we seen you drive this in sardinia would have like to see you do a more about the extras the new Zoe brings to the bigger picture.

Have you tried a ze50 r135 ? You would be surprised at how much faster you can get upto town speeds or 50-60 mph than normal manual ice cars . I’ve beaten good bit more powerful car off the line .

This car has a lot of what's important to me in an EV: Range = 400 miles; price = less than $30,000USD. Charges much faster than a Tesla. I like the styling --- it looks to be fun to drive. I don't know how long the battery pack lasts, but if it's around the same as a Tesla, I'd rather buy one of these.

You just reviewed my next car, current car is a 2016 zoe 22kw and I have managed 119 miles to a charge, but if I can get the advatised range then I can get to anywhere I need to go in one stop not 4 like in my current zoe 😁 I like the understated looks, hopefully Renault will bring out the Zoe Sport with 4 wheel drive and be like the old clio sport to drive pitty the Renault dearlship and factory had to close (fully support though), will order when they open again

That’s how they sell EV’s you make them hot hatches people enjoy. Kids say to mums and dad’s approaching being able to drive take a whole new interest in mum or dads next car and try to influence. When I passed we had our second car as a wee Novo and then a Citroen AX. The AX had a spoiler from the manufacturer for god sake. Loved them both even when slow by today’s cars.

Hi. Very informative and cool channel. I have a few questions if you allow me. How much is the lift time of the battery? I mean when will I have to replace it and how much does the replacement cost me then? And the last question is that since I live in the middle of Iraq which has a hot weather sometimes even 55 C° in summer is this car safe to drive here with this hot condition?

Estimating range as you drive is more complicated than it seems, because every single action and circumstance has a direct effect on range. But to be fair, ICE vehicles have the same exact issue. I was in a rental (ICE) SUV once years ago that had a realtime MPG gauge and it fluctuated WILDLY as I drove up and down hilly areas, around curves, slow and on highways, etc. If it had had a range meter, based on that MPG and fuel available it also would have found it difficult to pin down a reliable number. Hook up a trailer and things get even more complicated...

I cant wait for a proper electric hot hatch. Similar pace to the golf r and similar size. So 0-60 around 5 seconds, with 5 doors and boot big enough for the family dog. And no more crossovers! Then I can finally come away from the hot hatch petrol car I have. I cant wait!

If Renault fixed the issue: charging from 230 V IT-grid, without barrier box. It would make a good option i Norway. If they added towing hitch with 750 kg (or more), I would suggest it to my parents. They hav IT-grid at home, restricting requiring a special adapter for home charging. Because IT-grid is so common in Norway, they would need a portable adaper as well. That is too inconvenient. If Renault just gave it a go, to solve those two issues, I believe they could double (maybe more) their sales in Norway

When Robert announced „charging faster than a Tesla“ I thought of 150 kW DC for a moment. 😁.........😂 But we still feel privileged with our ZE40 charging at 22 kW. That said, we rarely use it. Most of the time 11 kW is more than sufficient, and probably better for battery longevity.

Achenar Myst I believe charging at slower rate is the most efficient way to charge a battery, as forcing things to save time, often leads to costing more, both in the short and long in this case! But then people who have the mind set ‘money is time ‘ burning more money and often end up burning the planet! Just to get what they want rather than need! It’s called greed!!

Scary was going to Applecross in one of these - and watching the battery go down. As we descended on the other side of the pass, much of the charge returned. So we did get home without problems, but it was scary as at one time it looked as though we were pushing the limit on the round trip. The Zoes do become more touchy in cold weather. Also having the battery charged up fully is not a good idea for regular use, as this limits braking performance - best not to go above 80% - unless really planning a long trip - and equally also - not going below [say] 30%. Also unfortunately the Zoes have now been given black marks for safety. One other thing, in Eco mode, the accelerator pedal has a definite kick back at around 50-55 mph - which I find annoying. What I really want to know is whether a Tesla granny charger can be used to charge one of these Renaults.
