What do you do with all the bee wax that you get from your bee hives? For me, I save it up till I have a nice pile of it, and then I melt it all down. It's a slow process, but when it's done, you wind up with the prettiest, sweet smelling, chemical free bees wax around. Check out the way I do it here at Saint Joseph Abbey. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

I added the cocoons and rubbish from the process to the garden...makes great soil conditioner and chickens love to dig it in...my guess is there are other micro nutrients as well...

How do you break the clump of cocoons apart. That thing is as hard as a rock? There are chickens at the abbey and I'd love to put it in their yard with the compost pile. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Jeff Horchoff Bees I have been watching quite a few of your videos on beekeeping, actually! I find them very relaxing, and I always appreciate your very human approach to working with bees (such as relocating the colony safely when they need to be removed.) I also appreciate the respect that you have for these amazing animals, and are very thorough with honey extraction and wax rendering, making sure that the amount of waste is kept to a minimal. After all, they did work very hard for them. Keep up the great work, from one Mr. Edd to another Mr. Ed.

2 quick questions: how many hive boxes did you need to collect all that wax & how much does a 15 pound block of wax sells for?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 6 жыл бұрын
I really don't have any idea how much wax was collected to produce this much refined wax.....it was a LOT. It was more than 7 months worth of collected wax. Rendered wax can sell from $9.00 a pound to up to $ 35.00 a pound. It depends on the purity of the wax and also the source of the wax. Because I have treatment free bees, therefore treatment free bees wax, it would sell for for about $ 15.00 a pound, but I don't sell wax as I need it all for our bees. I give it right back to them. God's peace. Mr. Ed

We get about 4 pounds of wax from the cappings from 6 or 8 medium honey supers. Have been using a big canning pot on a turkey fryer. We harvest around 30 pounds of wax a season off approximately 40 colonies. We use it to coat new foundations and make some candles. The bees will work on the new foundation and get it drawn out into combs much faster if you give each foundation a nice coating of fresh bees wax from your own hives.

I just finished rendering my wax yesterday from the frames we harvested from the honey inside my kitchen with a small kettle pot. It's kinda messy to filter inside the house with a ladle and a strainer, but worth it! I was able to get roughly 2 pounds of wax so far just from the honey frames we harvested. I keep my wax and I'll turn most of it into candles for us to burn. This has been our third year as beekeepers in the upper Midwest.

Excellent video! Just a question. On another video, the guy mentionned that the reject material could be turned into fire starter. Is that the case? What if that reject material was remolded in - say - an ice cube tray, would the stuff light easily and burn?

Glad you liked the video! The refuse makes great fire starter, the problem is as soon as it strains, it hardens. Putting it in a mold would be difficult....at least for me. As it is, I just break some off and it works real well. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

What a beautiful beeswax but kindly sir I have suggestion how about putting a parchment paper or something in the bucket first and then add the melted wax. This way you can easily get it out of the bucket.

I never considered using parchment paper, the wax when hardened comes out easy enough. Thank you for your suggestion and for watching. Stay safe, God's peace. Mr. Ed

I loved the video, it shows that you placed a ton of work and time into creating that block of wax. What would that block go for if you were attempting to sell it, or does all your potential profit come from what you can create from that block of wax?

I am working right now on another wax rendering video and I have at least 2 ays of work into it already. The process is really cool, but the value of the wax is not a monetary one as the wax goes right back to the bees as you will see in the video link below. If you wait a few more weeks, you will see the new way I use the wax for the bees here at the abbey. Thanks for watching. God's peace Joel. Mr. Ed kzbin.info/www/bejne/onncoYKod66Hg80

Thanks Jeff for sharing. I got interested over a year ago, and have exhausted many of the videos online, because I tried to order bees to late last spring. Not this year though, had planned on starting with one box...which became 3, then 5, and now its 7 boxes and queens on order. Locals asking for hives set at their location, paying for their bees. Good thing I built over 400 frames and 52 hive boxes while it was -20 and colder out, a head of time. So, when I have bee's to take a photo of, you bet I'd love to share them with you. Between waiting for bee's to arrive in April, and getting married in July...the anticipation in waiting is building my excitement....woot!! ps...not many swarms in Alaska, unless about a million acres starts to burn, that forces them to move to places one can actually find them.

I would love to see the pictures when you get them! You really keep yourself busy and productive even though the weather does not give much thought to creature comforts. I am very impressed with the mind set of Americans that choose to live in such an untamed environment, you are truly a breed apart. Then, on top of that, you are getting married in July, congratulations! You can reach me at oscelata@gmail.com when you have pictures to send or other comments. Stay healthy and warm. God's peace.
