Read where Richard Wilkins stated that when Renee was in a coma, Paul Kelly & friends went to see her just before she died. “They sang songs including ‘Heading in the right direction’ and doctors were amazed, her vitals went to perfect for a moment” Wilkins said. He said she felt the love in the room ❤

Singing "Heading in the Right Direction" to someone lying in a coma in a hospital (hence dying) is just so so wrong on so many levels......it is even more wrong that person is Renée Geyer....it is not the kinda direction you wanna head towards.

@@TheProtestantPope she had inoperable lung cancer. Heading In The Right Direction might b the most appropriate song. I don't know if she was the "let go, let God" type but perhaps it was comforting believing she was going 2 a better place & had that support from her mates. Or Maybe it was 1 of her favourite songs. Whatever the situation I think ur overly harsh saying how wrong it is on so many levels. Says who? u? That's not ur business. Just going by ur name I might assume u believe in "Gods will" let's leave it there. RIP, RG X

I was with her then....I brought the boys up to her room, Paul K, Charlie Owen; Yuri, Jex, and Paul Hambrook...very confronting for them to see RG so vulnerable ...so sick . They played Difficult Woman,Foggy Highway, Midnight Train, and a couple of others. As I left them to have that time with her, the doctor pulled me aside and said, " Look at all her numbers ...they're perfect right now" It gave us so much comfort to think perhaps she heard it...they say that hearing is the last thing to go...it really was a magic moment. I was leaving a message to say thank you to this KZbinr for playing her stuff and really "getting" what a great singer she was....even some of her BV's are incredible...like in Sting's Let's get Together...her bv's really make that song. So please keep playing her music so her legacy lives on. I was her Manager and Tour Manager for the last 25 years...I was with her at the end holding her hand....still can't believe she's gone. ❤

I hit the LIKE button before I started watching, I just knew it was going to be special. This is a master class for young singers and musicians. Sure, you can impress everyone with your vocal gymnastics, and Renee could have done that, but she also showed how to hold an audience in the palm of your hand with a song's subtle and poignant notes. Thank you Nick for giving these singers a world wide platform. RIP beautiful lady.

I was fortunate enough to see Renée live on so many occasions in clubs around Melbourne, I lost count. I just loved her from the first time I saw her and followed her from the mid 70’s right up until her passing. I have a tear in my eye even saying that. Best soul singer male or female to ever come out of Australia. If she was born in America, she would have been up there with the greats, like Aretha. That’s how good she was. RIP Renee, you are very sadly missed.

Over the years I reckon you could listen to a dozen or more versions that Renee did and all of them would be different.... it depended on how many times she'd done it that week... or how she was feeling at the time... she was the Queen of inflections and she was very very special to us. I don't think I've ever heard anyone similar unless you know of Kerrie Biddell... Unfortunately there isn't a lot of content for Kerrie on the net... some live albums with very dubious quality... but she was also one of our extremely talented vocalists....

Rene was "the truth" the most underrated singer ever - she spent several years in LA in the 90's, we were label mates on EMI publishing and were put together to write, one of the first songs we wrote together went Gold - We became the best of friends she was like a big sister to me, we ended up living in apartments in the same building - she was family!! I had a dream yesterday about her and thought, I should check in with her, it's been too long, sadly I discovered she has gone. I am gutted. I took for granted we'd get together and record together again someday. What a great loss, for me she was another level and I've produced & written for "Singers!!!!" The Temptations, Cece Winans, Whitney, Al Jarreau, Ledisi, Frank McComb to name a few - Rene was "mind blowing" on every level and she was a sweet soul. I Love you Rene, I'll always sing your praises - you should be in the HALL OF FAME next to Aretha and Nina and Donnie Hathaway where you belong . RIP

Consummate performer. Renee smashing it out since the 1970's, as a teenager. She had a reputation for being sometimes abrasive, but she had class and style to the max. And she surrounded herself with brilliant players, the chemistry bringing the best out of all. Peter "Lucky" Luscombe on drums here, you'll know him from the "Rockwiz" band. There's another massive Aussie voice he worked with, at times, the legendary Australian blues man, Chris Wilson. Also departed and sadly missed, Chris had the voice to die for, and could play the harmonica like someone possessed.

@@carolcarol3938 Back in the 1980/90's I'd go to a little pub in Melbourne called the Windsor Castle on Monday nights to see Dutch Tilders, for free. Yep, no cover charge. Occasionally Chris would sit in with Dutch. First time I thought "this bloke could be a superstar." Like, Dutch was incredible anyway, but there was something about Chris & that massive voice. Found out he was headlining a gig regularly at the Station Hotel on Saturday nights, with his band, Crown Of Thorns. Went once, and was hooked. Saw so many shows, and they always left the crowd calling for more. I still reckon if Chris had been born in the USA he would have been a mega-star. His "Live At The Continental" album is one of Australia's greatest works of art, full stop.

@@wilks6 Yeah; I'd see Chris at the Elsternwick and other venues. He would have smashed it in the States. All the names that keep popping up ...Dutch Tilders😃. I went to Frankston High School and they had a "dance" on at the school hall .."the Big Fish". They had some amazing acts on that were in their very early days eg: AC/DC. I'm so glad I grew up in the music generation that I did. I feel sad for the mainstream music of today.

Not sure if anyone mentioned but when Renee’s version of It’s a Man’s World was released in the USA in the 1970s it was played mainly on R&B stations. It was one of those cases when she was mistaken as Black based on her performances. She did move to the States but other than doing back vocals, including backing Toni Childs and Chaka Khan, she didn’t break through. She moved back to Australia where she remained until her death.

It takes a great artist to pull off such a unique interpretation of a classic song. First time hearing Renee and sad to learn she recently passed. I will have to listen to more. Crazy listening to Nick's comments because they could easily have been said about Angelina Jordan who has already re-invented many classic tunes and even was able to copyright her versions of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "I Have Nothing". Angelina will take the world by storm when Republic Records is given the green light by her family to promote her.

An album to begin with would be "Difficult Woman". It's a minimalist album, produced by Paul Kelly, another legend. It's so good I had my first two copies 'mislaid. They disappeared. 2 of my friends toured with her as her engine room. She could be difficult. Definitely an individual. She backed some huge names early in her career, in LA. Fabulous talent.

The closest I heard Angelina reinventor song was what she did with Bohemian Rhapsody. Everything else she’s done yeah is there closely resembles the original or she’s doing a cover of a cover, I’ll cover that not everyone knows but then you look up and you see that it was done before. That’s not to diminish her talent, she’s very talented. But this lady here isn’t a class of her own in terms of completely reinventing a song.

@@Rosannasfriend Thanks for your reply and I am glad that I now know of Renee. Please check out Angelina's version of Suspicious Minds and California Dreaming. Yeah its strange that Rugby League player Matt Geyer pronounced his last name the way Nick pronounced it. Was always pronounced Gayer way back before it took on the other connotation.

Greetings from Oz and well done. On pronunciation... mate, think of two drag queens in a bar and one turns to the other and says, "I'm gayer than you." That's how you say her name. RIP for a epic woman and staunch performer. Edit: Enjoyed your reactions. Cheers.

Last name is pronounced Gayer. When she was in US they didn't want to put her picture on her records because people thought she was a black singer & the record company thought it would affect her sales if people realised she wasn't black.

I worked at The Basement for 3 years in the 80's. Renee preformed there. She was one of my favourite singers back then however incredibly rude and entitled. Enough said. Rest in peace Renee I was at a live concert 1982.Close to the stage. I yelled a compliment out and whistled .She stopped the band shone the light on me and called me a slut. She was pretty drunk that night or high. Anyway good soulfull singer. She WAS a difficult woman. My experience
