Paul Kelly wrote a great song about his friend Renee ' A Difficult Woman ' and she at first hated it , then came to love it as she accepted that it was indeed a good characterisation of herself. She had a very difficult life of ups and downs that kept the success, she truly deserved, from reaching it's full potential. However she was eagerly sought to sing back up for many famous American groups and artists on many successful releases. Though not pointedly acknowledged, she was much respected behind the scenes.

Chaka Khan was one, Sting Neil Diamond, she did alot of studio back vocals, there many many artist that just heard her voice and thought she was a black singer for sure. Loved Renee live, it was a year ago when I last saw her and she recognised me. I'd been coming to her shows for years, when I went up to her as I always did after her shows {when I could} to thank her she said you can come anytime and stop paying called her assistant told her the same we exchanged numbers emails and I never paid again. That's how generous she was. I have been so sad and gutted that we have lost her, she was so funny and kind. I have some great photos with her over the years. Vale Renee Geyer gone far too soon.

@@paintitblack6728What a lovely story & she sounds such a wonderful woman as well as an incredibly talented singer. I was pretty young when I first saw her & didn’t really appreciate the depth of her talent until years later. She really was a trailblazer re: the tone of her voice & the genre of music she did. She really should have been a worldwide superstar. RIP, lovely Renée! 💕

Just like our Aussie cousins, Renee Geyer is our Australian Soul Diva of Hungarian decent, "It's A Mans World" put her on the Kiwi's radar, "If Loving You Was Wrong" "Heading In The Right Direction" & "Stares And Whispers", solidified her Status in the eyes many Aussies and Kiwi's, "It Only Happens" became a NZ (Party) Anthem amongst indigenous Maori and is still a favourite sing-a-long to this day

As you well know by now, Renee passed only yesterday. At around 6:20 you talk about closing your eyes and hearing a black woman. When Renee was trying to break ground in the US market, with "Heading in The Right Direction", the radio promoters were very interested, but soon lost interest when she insisted that her face be on the cover of the single. They wanted the the audience to believe that she was black. It seems that the US was not quite ready for a white Australian, with, arguably, one of the best female soul voices in the world, black or white. Have a listen to "Difficult Woman", a song written for her by Paul Kelly.

Birth name Renée Rebecca Geyer Born 11 September 1953 (age 69) Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Confessions of a Difficult Woman .She described herself as "a white Hungarian Jew from Australia sounding like a 65-year-old black man from Alabama". She spent more than ten years based in the United States but had little chart success there under her own name, yet contributing to releases by Neil Diamond, Men at Work, Sting, Trouble Funk and many others. Geyer returned to Australia in the mid-1990s and her career has continued into the 21st century with her 2003 album, Tenderland, which peaked at #11 on the ARIA albums charts. Peace out.

I heard Renee tell how it was Quincey Jones who was desperately trying to convince her that it would be a huge mistake and she argued that he was just being silly.. I think she told this story while appearing on the celebrity music panel game show SPICKS AND SPECKS. She admonished her own naievity and proud determination in ignoring the advice of a huge US music industry legend whose advice she should have followed. She said something along the lines of ....So I put my huge big pink, stupid face on the cover and that was it!..... But she did manage a wry laugh about it. I'd say that Renee wouldn't have picked herself, her huge reserve of talent and her career up and forged ahead without that wry sense of humour and that proud determination.

Nick you’ve done a reaction to Renee twice prior to this one, with her solo Heading in the right direction and she also sang with Jimmy Barnes and co with Knocking on heaven’s door…..My favourite part of that song was when Jimmy took the microphone from the stand and san with Renee…. She is the epitome of soul. PS when she went to the US they did not want to put her photo on the cover of her music because she was white…. I suppose in those days it was mostly radio that would get a song out there so there would not have been the film or video with the release, and when the US heard her they assumed she was of colour and felt that her popularity would drop if they found out otherwise. Geyer refused the suggestion, and interest in her did fall. Their (US) loss though because she is our Soul woman 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
