“They took your story, something that meant SO much to people like me, and turned it into something trivial.” This line hurts. You feel how wounded they were by the process of achieving beyond their wildest dreams, of making art that changed the world, only to see the world swallow it up and move along.

All because the straight up-laced up world that most people know and are familiar with, didn't seem to care that it had been the trans-community that made the Matrix trilogy movies. And.....the OTHER world wasn't ready for it. Transphobia certainly had a part in that, but not entirely. Most people that are hetrosexual (the so-called normal part of the human nature that we already know, and have always known) certainly hadn't been ready to deal with it nowdays. It's still considered a major taboo in this country,in example. But not in Canada. No country on this earth is perfect, but Canada is better at accepting the LGBTQ community in their nation better than we in America are. Even though we're considered the strongest, most powerful (and supposedly wealthy) nation on earth.... But we're not. The Matrix trilogies had been a masterpiece and legendary all on its own, regardless. Despite of it all. Especially adversity. 😙

@@niRtywa_starcvntCanada is more acceptable to the LGBTQIH+ community than our country in 🇺🇸 (America) is. Hollywood doesn't want to admit it,but because the Matrix trilogies had been legandary all on its own, despite the little-known fact that it had been the trans-community that made it happen.... Most of us that are straight, hetrosexual, and are certainly acceptable in Hollywood, ironically don't want the rest of the mainstream media and society to let us know that.

The trans allegory is a very big part of the film, but another part of the film I found very compelling was its meta critique of movie reboots and sequels. The reasoning for the Analyst resurrecting Neo and Trinity (they are literally milking them for energy), and the fact that Neo's life experiences are reduced to a video game inside the Matrix world, is a commentary on how capitalism will take something that is sincere and personal (especially art), and will try to reduce it to a corporate product, killing its individuality and personality in the process.

Yes, this. In sociological sense, it's called "recuperation", when the politically radical ideas and images are twisted, co-opted, absorbed, defused, incorporated, annexed or commodified within media culture and bourgeois society, and thus become interpreted through a neutralized, innocuous or more socially conventional perspective. Very good observation.

There's really nothing meta about using sequels and reboots to sell sequels and reboots about the problems inherent ...in sequels and reboots.. seems like something you do when you don't really know how to make a good movie anymore.. that being said if a community finds inspiration in it and positivity more power to them

Very nicely written, that's exactly why I loved Ressurections. The fact that so many people missed this point and decided to bash the film in my opinion confirms this because most people have become the sheeple who willingly fall victim to consumerism and just want another regurgitated same story mumbo jumbo (which makes me love the film even more). It's funny too that people want more Matrix, which also confirms what Smith said in the Budget Meeting with Anderson "That's the thing about stories, they never really end". I think Ressurections will be another Matrix wine movie, just gets better with age. Thank you for posting this! Also reading the comments makes me glad that there are still a lot of deep and critical thinkers out there. Thank you all!

When I came out as Trans that happened to me. I was being bad at school and my adoptive mom wasn't happy about it. She sat me down and said that I wasn't leaving till I told her what was wrong. I was so upset I was crying, after like 3 hours of avoiding it I finally told her. She laughed in my face then yelled "hey honey come here, get a load of this" then she told my adoptive dad and he laughed as well. Worse yet I ran to my room after that, my adoptive mom followed and then told me she was sorry for laughing but I should know that if I was Trans no one would love me. Here I am now on my own finished my first year on T and I have a feuncèa that loves me. For all those young nd old Trans individuals out there you are valid, and loved. Great essay. My immediate thought after the first viewing of _Resurrections_ was that Lana should pull a Tarantino and release a novelization of the film. It would make a great book. Also: *Neo 1999:* The angry young Gen Xer vs Conservative culture & the corporate establishment. *Neo 2021:* The exhausted, existentially despondent middle-aged Gen Xer vs the tech bro in a world he helped define yet has no place in. I've loved the Matrix since Day One. I absolutely understand the trans metaphor. For me, as a disabled wheelchair person fully dependent on others for my care, I FELT the movie. I felt SEEN. I felt understood for the right to exist as ME. I have to hide my personality, my interests and my beliefs for fear of losing my care. Being disabled does mean having to be pleasing and diplomatic in order to "Earn" the "right" to care and autonomy. My authentic self is harder to hold onto when others don't literally like me and can punish me for being me by withholding care. I STILL have to be careful, but as I've gotten older, I've learned how better to manage the privacy and to not be shamed or afraid of it. Genuinely, not much has changed. But I care far less about what others think of Me. I loved this movie. It's a love story. It's a fight for freedom. It's a fight for autonomy and self actualizing. I've also watched the works of Lana and Lilly through the years, the change and the stories they've told. So I also see this movie as the happy ending they've learned through their experiences is possible. OF COURSE it's a different movie from the first movie and I think that is the majority of the complaints I've read (it not being enough like the first movie) besides belittling it for being a trans metaphor.

I think that the fact that Wachowski's real life experiences served as inspiration for the films is beautiful. I suspect that everyone has a 'splinter in their mind' and that is why these films are so powerful. We should expect that the 'splinter' is not going to be the same for everyone and I find it bizarre that one could devalue the story because they can't relate first hand to the real life influence. Also, if someone's gender is so important to you than maybe you should consider how free your mind is.

As a confused kid seeing the original to a queer, transgender adult, this movie meant a lot. it kinda stumbles with it's fight choreography, bombards you with meta-narrative and is forced to re-tread old ground. I loved every second of it. It was unapologetic about how open it was with its messages, and the sincerity that Lana put into the story was heart-breaking at times. I straight-up cried at several moments. And the queer coded subtext wasn't just painted over top, it was baked into its bones. This movie was -so gay- in just the best ways. the trans narratives really hit me too, I transitioned later in life so the concepts of being lost, wishing to be seen, thinking it's too late, thinking it's all in your head or it's not for you, or you can't, the weariness that comes with having to do it now after the world has ground you down, wow those hit home just so hard. Great review of a Great movie!

I rewatched the trilogy with a couple friends before watching resurrections. The best thing about the first is that it spent time looking at average life in the matrix, which we later find out was a false reality. The second and third we already knew it was a false reality and though the stakes were higher, the matrix felt kind of flat and fake, and we couldn’t identify with it as our world. The fight scenes dragged on in the second and felt lifeless. We all liked the third, it only suffered somewhat from problems in the second film. Resurrections left me with similar feelings of watching the first. Can’t tell what reality is, waking up from the matrix, trinity being “the one”. I liked the film a lot more than I'd dare hope. The original remains The One, the 'very meta' montage where everyone chimes in on what the Matrix really is felt a bit cheesy, but I thought it was full of nice little details and I liked how it doubled down on Wachowski's own reading of the original as on one level being about trans people's experience living in a gender-binary world. Also call it a stretch (but what's a stretch with a film so densely 'coded' like this) but I felt naming Tiffany's husband 'Chad' was smart not just because the role is played by real-life actor Chad Stahelski, but also because of how this 'Handsome Chad' is a Red-pilled/Incel stand-in for that mythical alpha male who get all the chicks. Thank you so much for this review. As a long time fan of The Matrix universe, including my character being written into the story of The Matrix Online through participation in its Live Events, I was apprehensive about this film. Having lost my father and several friends to COVID, Lana's writing about trauma, grief, loss, and recovery spoke directly to me, and this review is a refreshing change from the superficial thoughts of those who didn't like the movie because it wasn't a tired old rehash of the same old ideas and pointless action. The movie wasn't written for those who were only looking for violence and special effects, but for those who needed to hear that loss, pain, and grief aren't forever, and trauma can be healed. Sometimes we can get a second chance to be happy.

I was a closeted teen when the first Matrix came out. I identified with Neo and Trinity, his journey to authentic identity, her acceptance of him, their romance being the validation of Neo's identity. The next two films were fun-ish but the ending for both Neo and Trinity took a hard left turn and the went from speaking subtly on queer identity, and became typical western literature and mythic archetypes. Fun, if you like the mythic process I guess. Also, their fates at the end were the hardest part of the whole series for me, personally. Resurrections returned the series to its core of exploring identity. It's what really sold me on the first one, and yeah it was definitely beautiful here. And I'm glad that Neo and Trinity get to fly into the sunset together and change the world. Thanks so much for this video essay.

This comment contains spoilers. I wish I liked it. It dove off a cliff for me once it stopped being about Keanu navigating his crushing alienation and became a fairly cliched by-the-numbers heist movie to save the protagonist's love interest. My sense was that after neo encounters the new Morpheus and his boss turns into Smith most of the very cool hyper-meta narrative threads are dropped in favor of generic action movie plot twists. The meta stuff then ceases to be relevant critique and turns into self-description.

I watched the matrix resurrections when it came out in cinemas here in the uk and it just meant so much to me, the original trilogy itself had a huge impact on me both as a formative experience for me (having first watched the original when I was 12 and becoming enthralled with it), an amazing action series, an anticapitalist critique and as intensely trans series. Back when I first watched the matrix, I didn't even know what being trans was, yet when I realised I was trans it reshaped the entire series for me, it made it feel so much more personal and intimate, and watching resurrections for the first time felt like experiencing those moments all over again, like meeting up with an old friend and catching up with them, reflecting back on all those memories

@Sir Jeff yes in the best way possible. The movie is simultaneously very ironic, meta and cynical, especially towards the disturbing and grotesque state of modern capitalism, the film industry and art in general, but it’s also incredibly grounded earnest and heartfelt with the protagonists, the trans stuff and so on. It’s making fun of itself while also being extremely emotionally vulnerable and real. It’s wild, and so much fun because of that.

The great thing about Matrix 4 is how it’s a big rant against franchise sequels and the idea of another Matrix sequel, as well as the hundreds of fan theories and interpretations created over the years. And Lana Wachowshi is a romantic at heart, focusing the story on the romantic leads and discarding all the other actors.
@Viderii

Speaking as a Trans woman myself, the first trilogy of Matrix movies have a very special place in my heart for obvious reasons. And this movie did touch me in a similar way as well. It also made me want to rewatch the trilogy, then this, again. But I will admit that I came away from Resurrections thinking pre-dominantly that the movie was very clumsy. That is, it was clumsy on a technical level. The fight choreography was clumsy, the camera work was clumsy, everything felt 'bad' in a way that I find really hard to explain on that same level. But having had time to really think about the themes and how the story was handled, it was still incredibly blunt and clumsy, but I love it. For how much of a technical shitshow The Matrix Resurrections is, it stayed true to the vision of the writers; and ultimately created another movie that speaks to people who have lived an inauthentic life. And I do think there is beauty in that. A movie doesn't have to be elegant, graceful, or a technical masterpiece to have a point. Sometimes you need to shout to get that point across, which is a feeling I certainly understand from the perspective of someone who has had to fight to really be allowed to be myself.

Unfortunately Don Davis (original composer), Bill Pope (original cinematographer) and Yuen Woo-Ping (original fight choreographer) were not involved in Resurrections. I truly believe that had they all been able to assemble together to make this it would be close to perfect. Shame. But still a gift that we have Lana's vision of a Matrix sequel and not some mercenary hired by Warner Bros.

An interesting take! Personally, I expected a complete trash fire, and got a movie that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 2 and 3 never quite cut it for me--not that I think the ideas they introduced were bad, I just found them insufferably boring for the most part, and would have preferred to leave the story on the more optimistic note the original ended with. Resurrections, to my infinite delight, managed to recapture that uplifting feeling for me. One of the rare pleasant surprises of the necrophilic sequel/remake/reboot bandwagon Hollywood probably won't be getting off of any time soon.

"The Matrix Resurrections Is Absolutely Beautiful " and that's precisely what I was thinking while I was watching it! As a big, big fan of the original trilogy (I don't think I'll ever be able to elaborate on the overall impact it had on me growing up; I was 11 when the first film came out) I was more than pleased with this new film. The raw honesty, and the refusal to just phone it in and make something for a paycheck (even though she was/is struggling financially I believe). I believe M4 will become more and more popular as time goes on and people spend more time analyzing and unpacking it. I also loved the fact she included the "love is the genesis of all things" quote when it said it was dedicated to her parents. I lost my mom in 2020, and that resonated deeply with me.

I enjoyed the film and this analysis of it certainly rings true and deepens my appreciation of it. However in purely surface level entertainment I think it could have done better to engage a broader audience. I didn't mind it was largely a bit slower paced in places, I always felt it had something to say although I couldn't articulate anything like as well as this videos author. But the surface narrative felt a little confused in places and the action never really sparkled like it did in the original and even Reloaded with the excellent motorway scene for one. So I enjoyed the emotional core of the film and it kept my interest but could have done with a bit more polish. Also what awful timing releasing it a week after Spiderman.

It’s difficult for non-medical individuals to understand the ‘procedures’ that we in the medical community face attempting to provide each individual the care they need & want. Often it’s difficult to ascertain what the individual coming for help wants. It may be due to having been treated without respect. Some assume that all medical providers will treat them poorly & rather than “checking-in” become aggressive, argumentative to ‘overcome’ a perceived & sometimes non-existent resistance. Obtain help can be difficult 😞 emotionally & physically. Thanks for your take on this movie

Something i really like too is seeing how Neo's confidence grow as he gets closer to who he really is and by the end is basically "back" in full confidence he had in reloaded and revolution. Also, i wonder... who would Smith be in this vision ? There's so, SO much I love about this movie: the score, Groff and Abdul-Mateen's takes on Smith and Morpheus, The Analyst as a nightmarish synthesis of The Oracle and Architect, the subtle longing in Trinity's face when she meets Neo again, the manic desperation bubbling under Neo's surface right up to his encounter with Bugs, the cutaways to previous films that hit precisely the way flashbacks feel for me, Neo and Trinity reaching for each other (sometimes literally) with a sincerity we never got from the previous films... but what I keep coming back to is the afterlife of revolution. The way systems subvert and subsume resistance and reform, turn the weapons of defiance against the defiant. The perspective of the revolutionary on their legacy... Neo's immediate reaction was that he lost the love of his life and died for nothing, until Bugs introduces him to the Synths and then there's no ignoring the impact of his presence, hope wasn't lost just because revolution wasn't total. Goddamn I think I'm gonna go watch it again, maybe I'll get through it without getting choked up this time but I doubt it.

This was an eye-opening essay about the deeper meanings of the story, and I appreciate that. Unfortunately, I wish the other parts of what made the original Matrix so groundbreaking had returned as well, namely the fight choreography and innovative camera work. I went in hoping to return to that, but instead was disappointed. I appreciate the underlying story Lana was telling, that you explained here beautfiully, but I don't think it means I can forgive the subpar action and camera work in a franchise known for both.

Think the hallways scene in Oldboy vs Liam Neeson jumping ‘that’ fence.

This is purely my opinion. If you enjoyed the movie; I'm happy you liked it. Genuinely. The first Matrix posed one of the deepest questions, if not THE deepest question we can ask, "what IS reality?". On top of that it introduced a new, for lack of a better word, "genre" of special effects - bullet time. Which, in the 90's, was unlike anything we'd ever seen. It may seem quaint now but in the 90's it was literally jaw-dropping. Faster forward to today. We've had 20 years of bullet time. It's cliché, tired, and boring. Resurrections (much like 2 & 3) offered nothing new. No new deep philosophical questions. No new cinematography or special effects. Nothing. It comes off as just another drama about people trying to reconnect and/or rediscover who they once were. If the average viewer got some message that helps to more normalize trans folk, that's great. We need more of that. I just don't think the average cishet-non-twitter-brain-having-viewer is going to pick up on that subtext. Even if that was the writer/director's intent. As much as I hate the red pill chud discourse online, I cannot pretend I enjoyed this movie or that it was good.

Resurrection had an interesting moral quandary of "what if the system can just adapt to our revolution and make it meaningless?" it's a highly salient question to ask in our current world where corporations keep coopting grassroots movements for positive change and the general feeling of helplessness to fight back. And then the movie kind of doesn't really address that crisis and instead focuses on a contrived rescue mission/love story. The biggest thing about this movie to me is that, where Reloaded felt like a movie with a love story that supported the themes of the movie, Ressurection felt like a love story with a movie that supported the drama of the love story. Just isn't as interesting.

Maybe it wasn't for you. It was for people who ARE aware of the subtext. And it was beautiful.

This totally changed my view of the Matrix 4 (and the three previous ones). Thank you! I will rewatch it tonight having this new perspective.

This really speaks to the gap that often exists between idea and execution. One can be beautiful and sincere and the other can be sorely lacking. Both need to be present in equal measure to complement one another and create a great work of art.

Thanks for this review. I didn´t watched the movie yet because all my trusty movie review channels say it´s the baddest movie of the year. But all of them missed out these details you are talking about. Now i will watch it. With reseted expectations.

The Matrix Resurrections perfectly captured how much Lana Wachowski did NOT want to make another Matrix movie. It was basically a 2 1/2 hour middle finger to WB with some Old Man yelling at cloud in an incompressibly thick French accent sprinkled in for flavour.

Great to finally hear some positivity about Matrix: Resurrections. I've heard so many channels moaning about how "shit" and "awful" the movie was so it's nice to finally hear a different view. Love your channel btw. The ideas you talk about regarding history and politics is very well thought out and interesting to listen to. Keep it up 👍
