Black Panthers like other Big Cats (like Mountain Lions) try to avoid humans, they are very smart and recognize us as higher than them on the food chain. Panthers are curious animals that are not interested in humans and do not view them as prey. However, human encroachment is the biggest threat to their survival. All you do is make yourself look as big as possible and back up slowly and allow the panther room and time to run away on its own.

I have to disagree when it comes to the panther story. Yes, the guys shouldn't have just started unloading their guns, but nothing they did in that situation was out of line. Dealing with animals is much different than dealing with people. If they waited for what they believed to be a panther to come out of the Bush and it was the panther that thing could be on top of one of them, almost instantly and that could result in anything from a hospital visit to a funeral.

I think you kind of have to play the odds though. A panther/cougar is a skittish animal that almost never attacks people. And while that black panther had a unique color, there was nothing to indicate it was any more aggressive than any other panther. Very rarely do they go into attack mode on people so the correct course of action is to keep facing it and back up. The reality is that the threat level of a cougar is extremely low. Unless you've got a small animal with you it's not deserving of any paranoia.
