@mckenzie.latham915 жыл бұрын
No music works best in long dramatic scenes, horror and certain spots where you don't need music to push or control emotional involvement. for example the music of lord of the rings is supposed to be epic to match the grand and greatness of the fantasy adventure that is the material Jaws uses the music well to build up the suspense and fear as the shark is under the water and we don't see it that much, While there are several moments in Alien and Aliens where there is no music, which adds to the horror and danger of the atmosphere in the scene.
@thomasgrindol91247 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the idea that the soundtrack isn’t supposed to be thought about. Sometimes subtle works, like in Dunkirk. Other times the soundtrack makes the moment more intense like in Halloween or more awesome like in The Avengers or Jurassic Park.

To be fair this one should be at least 2 movies. The original crammed down the events from when they were kids and when they were adults and it didn't flow very well. Especially when they repeated the same beats over and over. A character is introduced, flashback to when they were kids, then show their first Pennywise encounter, he scares them and leaves, back to the present, rinse and repeat.

I think this might be one of his best reviews. While I not nescessarilt agree to everything, he makes his points clear and shows how to fix the things wrong instead of just saying they are bad. He didn't even ruin the scenes he didn't like for me by picking them appart because he makes so much sense. Fuck, he seems like he even really liked the movie despite its flaws. Also, the sketches weren't that over the top compared to other reviews, which is weird since this review is just sketches. Those lame jokes really started to draw me away from Nostalgia Critic at some point, and of course he made the lame ass gang bang joke. By the way, his portrayal of 2017 pennywise was amazing! He got so many mannerisms right Just one thing that I've been seein since the very first pictures of pennywise started showing up that the critic mentioned at the very beginning and never made sense, and that is that as a clown, it's supposed to be friendly at first and when you get your guard down it kills you. That's so wrong! The only part of the books where he does that is when it kills Georgie, and then it just shows up as werewolves, leeches, mummies or whatever, and when it confronts the kids as pennywise the dancing clown the kids already know it's after them to kill them, so he doesn't play nice anymore. Hell, in the movie even when he tries to make Georgie laugh with the Pop! pop! pop! line he goes back to being intimidating again because Georgie is starting to feel comfortable again and it wants Georgie scared, which I thought was really well done. I mean, even if you made a clown on the sewers friendly it's still going to be creepy as fuck, so I'm glad the 2017 movie didn't play too much with that. Second, the cliches he mentioned. Beverly wasn't a damsel in distress. Had it been any other character no one would have mentioned it, but just because she's the girl the movie is sexist. Fuck, she was the only one who wanted to fight it and stick with Bill, if anything she has more balls than the rest of the club combined. Damsel in distress goes beyond "captured girl". As red from overlysarcasticproductions pointed out, it's all about the mind set. She didn't give up and said fuck it I'm going to wait to be rescued, but she had no means of fighting back. She had conquered her fears when she stood up to her father and face him herself. If Bill or Ben had rescued her from her father's abuse, then I'd agree with her being a damzel in distress, but It capturing her is completely different. As for the "kiss of true love" thing, the kiss works because Ben thought it'd work because it's a cliche in movies, but here it works "in real life". That is a theme throughout the final comfrontation in the novel, and I'm surprised Doug mentioned that considering he's read the novel. The silver rocks or the battery acid on Eddie's inhaler is the book's way of showing that, and the kiss and the gun are the movie's. In fact, I think the kiss works much better than the gun, because why the fuck would Bill think the gun would work if it isn't loaded? Especially since Mike tells him that it's not loaded seconds before he shoots it. I think the movie didn't do the theme justice in that regard. As for his last point, he calls Tim Curry's pennywise funny, and Bill Skarsgard's scary, as if Bill's portrayal was just that. He pulled a lot of laughs in the movie, such as teasing Eddie about eating him, or waving the half eaten arm to Mike. That's funny in the creepiest way possible, and wasn't that what he meant by being both funny and scary? In fact, he calls Pennywise on that saying he's too goofy... That didn't make much sense. I agree on Tim Curry's portrayal though. Maybe because I saw it 20 years too late, or maybe because I had seen all the memes before, but he never struck me as scary, at any point of the mini series, I don't know. This point in particular seems like one of those "let's agree to disagree" arguements. He also called anthrax "silly music", what the fuck!

Doug kinda missed why Bill saw her in slo mo after seeing her initially. They’ve known each other since an earlier grade (when Richie was talking about them kissing in the play). As years went on rumors spread about Bev and Bill probably had his preconceptions of her. But in the pharmacy she was this kind, cunning and resourceful girl who helped them without asking for anything in return. Coupled with teenage hormones and his expectations being shattered he fell in love with what Bev actually is - and not what cruel classmates made her out to be. Was that really that hard to understand?

24:12 I both agree and disagree. A movie can work with a powerful soundtrack, and others cant. The soundtrack can be part of the action and not distracting. You can here only it watching something and it can still work beautifully. Best example I can think of it the How To Train Your Dragon movies, as the music is what drew me into that franchise. Yes, certain scenes and movie don't work with a loud soundtrack, but some do.

I enjoyed the references to the 1980's, like the New Kids on the Block and the movie theater showings. It makes a story seem more realistic and it helps to make the setting fit with the specific zeitgeist of a certain era. Also, that creek scene didn't seem so unrealistically saccharine. Many people surely enjoyed swimming in lakes or creeks in their childhood, especially if they didn't have a pool. And maybe Bill didn't really get a good look at Beverly until she was walking right towards hi, whereas in the pharmacy he was just looking at her from the side. Also, Stanley more than likely thought no one would believe him if he told them what he had seen (would you believe it?). But I do wonder why he didn't go to a hospital. There' a pharmacy, but does Derry not have a hospital? Was the pharmacy just closer? I also though the leper was quite hideous and deformed and ravaged by infection and that they did a good job with the leper. When Eddy drops his placebo medication and someone else comes out of nowhere from the right offscreen and starts picking it up with him, that is rather unsettling.

Pretty much spot-on - I'm currently doing something similar in a comic I'm working on, where there's a scene that flashes back to the main character's mother's childhood in the 90s, and... well, you can guess where it goes from there. And similarly, there's a scene that flashes back to 2020, when one of the kid characters was... well, a slightly younger kid, so naturally a few ç0v!d masks show up here and there.
