Actually, dashcon was the catalyst for how tumblr is perceived now. Back then it was a more wholesome and comforting place.

One of the founders of Dashcon, who immediately got pushed out of any ownership status by the eventual owner (who screwed up everything and scammed everyone) is Lochlan O'Neil. She was 15 at the time of the con, and she made a video talking about what happened. She said she was the one who came up with the ideas for it, and claimed it was her fault that any of it even happened, which is commendable, but at the same time she ultimately had no say in what happened. The actual adults running the whole shitshow would rather pretend that everything was out of their hands instead of taking responsibility. Like heck, Lochlan ended up being the one passing over the badges, and not even allowed to go to the toilet. Then she got locked out of her hotel room.

5:10 There is kind of an explanation for that. Apparently, the Dashcon organizers sold the "We need $17000 right now" thing by claiming that the hotel staff were a bunch of bigots who hated the con-goers so much that they suddenly jacked up their fees out of nowhere. So, everyone thought that they were taking a stand against hate, I guess. Still stupid, but in a different way than it looks.

tumblr consists solely of fandoms and lgbtq+ content. The first mistake the organizers made was believing that they (a bunch of normal folk) could afford to make a convention suited for that audience.

And trying to get A - listers to attend the con, like- What? Granted the ones who started it were teens, but the ones who ended up taking charge of it were adults who just ran with it. Basically conning people, and the people they did invite (Welcome to Night Vale cast, etc) got screwed over too. After the failure these adults also decided it's a good idea to run another convention. People found out, and they shut it down not long after.

My last year of primary school had a school president run and they actually managed to fund and build an outdoor play gym with slide, monkey bars and everything. Problem was we as the oldest kids didn't get to play on it because we graduated to high school. It's still there twenty years on.

There was alot more going on behind the scenes that Sarah Z covered and wow Basically one of the volunteers was significantly younger than the others and about 17 or so at the time maybe younger But basically this minor was with these adults thinking she would get good experience , she worked for free - big mistake. She was excited at first but then the other members of organising the convention dropped their part of the workload on her when she was originally going to be an assistant and they basically lied to her about alot of stuff. She was overworked and stressed thinking this is the worst work experience in her life and then to make matters worse the other organizers were off spending money right from the start and also were making promises to dashcon fans who were planning to attend. To make matters worse she had to find this out months later by Tumblr not her higher ups so by the time she knew that they wanted these big names , she had very little time before the convention. Even worse on the other organizers was they blamed everything that went wrong on her when in actuality she was the only one giving a shit and trying to salvage it. Welcome to night vale were meant to come to the hotel and be paid , but someone took that money and pocketed it so they didn't bother even showing up because someone else leaked that they wouldn't be paid before the convention. That fundraising thing for 17,000 ? Some of that cash came from the what was promised to the other volunteers. The teenagers working for free and the young organizer included basically they came back to find their hotel rooms hadn't been payed for or in some cases weren't even booked in the first place. But the main organizers made sure to pay for their own suite and that also meant meals for the volunteers were cancelled because their food was meant to come with the hotel rooms. People slept on couches of generous participants of the con but there wasn't enough to go around because the people who payed for tickets with the hotel included didn't get their rooms either so it was just people who booked separately who had actual rooms for the con. Eventually people get blankets , coats and whatever they could to sleep , some even talked to staff for a chance to sleep in the lounges near the reception but that meant they had to be up before checking in reopened in the morning. Infact whats worse is some of the tickets advertised with behind the scenes VIP shit included acts that weren't even emailed to ask if they wanted to come to the event because even using the email of the event was locked behind the highest up in the group of organizers.

As I understand from poking around, there's a much deeper story to the dysfunction in the leadership of the con, which tells a story more of... incompetence, and mind-numbing hubris that, kinda makes it seem like it couldn't have been an out and out scam. There was too much going on behind the scenes... some, wrongly, really thought they could make it work... and the rest thought they were smart enough to run the perfect con then did literally nothing to help it.

I'm gonna be completely honest here.
