Our weekly vlog is looking a little different this week, because there are some new and SUPER EXCITING updates to United States passport renewal, and I was lucky enough to get to test them out! You can now renew your US passport online with a new program the Travel department is rolling out! I'm going to tell you how to renew your passport online in 2022, and every year after :)
There's a few requirements you have meet, but most people will meet them, and you can even renew your passport before it expires. This is a wonderful thing to be able to do, because you don't have to fill out the DS-82, go to the post office, or pay shipping fees. And! It's so much faster! You can do it in 20 minutes from your living room!

Online renewals are back now but only routine processing and there only be limited slots available starting in the mid day afternoon EST. Department of State will be monitoring renewal applications to see if there are any changes (if any) to be made for a broader launch in the future. Like the current online renewal system it will deactivate your old passport so you cannot travel while waiting for your new passport. Edit: No name and/or gender changes will be available using the online renewal system at this time. Passport cannot be damaged, mutilated or lost and only those living in the US can use the online renewal system.

It’s seriously such a game changer! Mark Alan’s original passport took forever because something was wrong with his documents and it literally said processing for WEEKS. Also, the fact that they’re plastic now is awesome considering if it were to ever get wet!

Everyone reading this do yourselves a favor and mail your application in versus the online process. I’m at 7weeks and counting now and the status is they haven’t even started processing it yet. The government certainly didn’t wait to take my money though as soon as I hit the submit button. Also if you try to talk to an actual human being at the passport office to get any information on your application you’d probably have better luck getting Elvis Presley on the phone.

You can’t speak to anyone to help you and I even sent an email to their “help” email ID two weeks ago and that hasn’t been replied to yet either. Nothing but trouble from my experience. 5 times I have tried. More than an hours worth of time wasted. One thing that I don’t see anyone talking about is the date format. On the passport it’ll say 11 January 2018 for example. But on this online application it says mm/dd/yyyy I cannot tell if they really want it like 11/01/2018 like the book says or if they want it like 01/11/2018. Why do I say this when it clearly says mm/dd/yyyy? Because when I do it the month day year, it haaaaaaaaannnngggggsssss until it closes itself out and you have to start over. Again and again and again. I honestly don’t know what they actually want!

I also had issue with the date the first time I typed in. There was an error message and it wouldn’t let me continue. The second time I used the calendar to fill in the date instead (mm/dd/yyyy) and it worked. Hope it will work for you too.

Only if your passport is about to expire. I tried, but did not meet ALL the requirements, which included passport expiring in a year or less. I tried it yesterday and could not go ahead with it. I have to renew by mail. My passport expired in 2022, so it does not expire in a year or less.

@Emmm Hi Emmm, I'm grateful I sent in my application in when I did, I think the process starts once they look at your application not when you send it in. About 5 days after sending it in I rec'd an email that the saw a shadow in my pic even though I followed their guidelines and the pic was ACCEPTED on their page.A couple of days later I had sometime to re-submit, so I took a few selfies and chose a new pic. I think it was a day or two later when I rec'd an ACCEPTED email. I rec'd it about 4 days later by FedEx - Signature required. I hope that helps

For the online renewal it will deactivate your old Passport. Right now only renewals by mail are available as the online Passport system has been temporarily put on hold (due to issues).

I did mine online. I've been waiting for months to get my passport renewal back. My girlfriend applied for her first ever passport the same day. She's had her passport for over 3 weeks now and my passport renewal status still shows "In Progress" on the feds website. No way to contact other than a phone number that had me on hold for OVER 4 HOURS!!! I still haven't been able to speak to a live person about it. I leave in 4 days for our cruise. So I'm going with birth certificate, D.L. and an expired passport. I guess we'll see what happens. Glad I paid the extra $60 for expedited processing...

I renewed mine online at the beginning of January and the status has not changed from received. I'm two weeks out from travel and now I have to schedule an emergency appointment, but I can't do that until Monday. I've called 3 times and each person has told me they are actively upgrading the system so the status may not be accurate. It could just show up any day, but I can't risk it.

I’ve submitted my passport renewal online. It said an email has been sent but after 3 days I haven’t received the confirmation email. checked junk and trash mails, nothing found. Today I login to confirm the status. Yes it went though, but that’s it! It won’t allow any detail reviewing or update once it was submitted. BTW, I didn’t see choice of “regular book” or “large book” during the application. No freebies ?😭

Have you filled out the first application from top because the second one for the card it down the the book one and they are both information unless you said same Information so they thought you did , depending on how much they charge you so you can figure out you paid for book and card together.

Very good video but not a good experience with the govt. process so far. I applied on line 1st week of Jan. 2023 and the status of my application currently only shows as “Received” on Jan 4th 2023. So just over 7 weeks now and not even in processed status yet. I call their help number to see if I can find out what’s going and their phone system gives me no option to speak to anyone. If anyone has had any success in speaking with an actual human being in the passport office I’d really appreciate you sharing that info with me. I’m now wishing I’d have gone the mail in route and don’t even get me started on how horrible their website is when trying to access your account. Constant performance issues and after 5 attempts and multiple emails later with access codes you might actually be able to get in to your account to check the status of your application.

No. You have to be a US resident. They’ll only ship to US addresses.

I just made an account today. I will upload and submit everything hopefully tomorrow (after my account is verified). I travel in exactly 7 weeks, and I live in Hawaii. Would this arrive in time if I pay the express fee but NOT the expedited fee?

I would go expedited as they increased the routine processing timelines to 8-11 weeks. Express shipping is not going to make the timeline faster. You can add the expedited fee if you have already done a routine application or you can wait until 14 days of travel to call the state department for an urgent appointment (preferably at 8AM EST) with proof of travel (24 days if a Visa is needed).

I submitted it on 1/11, on 1/23 I received a confirmation letter (via email) which said: “We are currently processing routine applications in 6-9 weeks and expedited applications in 3-5 weeks from the date you submitted your application. Access your MyTravelGov account to check your application status. Click on "Manage Application" to upgrade to expedited service and 1-2 day delivery of your completed passport, or change your mailing address. Please note we are immediately invalidating (canceling) your most recent passport and you cannot use it for international travel while you wait for your new passport” **** Was my application frozen for 12 days? Can the gov be more efficient ? Did they intended to prolong the process? Is gov doing service or business?

@@AshleyandChristian It just finally decided to work. What was really hard was getting a photo to meet their requirements. It kept rejecting my photo because of shadows! But I finally got a photo that was accepted and put in my credit card, paid my $160 and in a few weeks I should have a renewed passport. Woohoo!

No you have to go through the Embassy or Consulate in Germany for a renewal. Online renewals are for US Citizens that live in the US. Right now the online renewal system is having issues so the US Department of State has temporarily put the service on hold.

I submitted mine online in early January, paid for expedited service and haven't received an update yet. I did my daughter's by mail and she got hers within a few weeks. This is a total nightmare. I wonder if we can do another application by regular mail? So many people having issues. Using this online service shouldn't be recommended by anyone.

No I don’t think you can since you’ll be issued a new passport number as well as issue/expiration date. I’d definitely check on that though because it could vary by country!

You would need a new passport in person with a DS-11 form. Bring the old passport if you have it for proof of citizenship.

Yeah you get a 10 year passport at 16, so you’d be minimum 25 when you’re within 6 months of it expiring! Anything before age 16 is a 5 year passport
