The elegant sleek engine reminded me of the Concorde jet, which passed out of use before I had a chance to fly on it. 😢 I thought the Spanish scenery was surprisingly appealing. I expected a flat, dry landscape, but the green agricultural fields and the various towns/cities were quite the opposite of bland. Overall you seem to have enjoyed a very pleasant trip! The last time I visited Granada, the tram was being built, and had hit some funding issues so was on a sort of hiatus. The station was also closed for the upgrades. It is good to see it all finished and working well

To me the front of the train looked like a dolphins beak. Long and sleek. I guess it’s very aerodynamic. It looks well designed and the inside lives up the outside. The only problem I have is with the roll down blinds is it can be annoying if you are sitting with others who don’t want the blind down. This is why I prefer curtains

Dylan, you really did an awesome report representing what Avant trains are for Spain. Fantastic trains, fast, BUT VERY EXPENSIVE, for what you get. In the case of Granada to Sevilla before Avant was launched there was an MD (media Distancia) train that connected both cities in like 3h 15 min, and was price was half of what you paid. What it is true, is that Avant trains will bring more people to trains in which in some cases the bus was faster. Other than that, yes, there are several stations in Spain, like Puente Genil that have never made sense, that are being put, just for political reasons, like the Andalusian government promised a station there, and it is being put. Others are located in the middle of nowhere. For example, Segovia, ave station is in the middle of nowhere and you have to take a bus like 20-25 min to reach the city center, Tarragona the same, and many many more. Fantastic video, once again.

Yeah, amigo; my brother commuted to Segovia and its city centre connecting local bus took longer than the Ave HST takes to cover the 100 km from Madrid. Now they're building the Ave network to Madrid Airport, imo for a minority market of rich travellers.

Great video as always Dylan, thanks. We've travelled on the SBB version from Milan to Basel. Even in 1st class I seem to remember it felt a bit cramped compared to the spacious classic intercity SBB trains - I guess that's because of the sloping carriage sides in order to allow for the tilt. But the ride quality is very good.

One detail about what you mentioned in a caption... All Renfe services subject to public subvention, that are, suburban conmuter services, regional services, medium-distance services (regionals with less amount of stops) and Avant services (high-speed regional with limited stops) are fixed-price, independently you book your ticket 2 months in advance or you buy it inside the station minutes before the departure. The only available discounts for single tickets (but you can get them even some minutes before the train departure) are round-trip (20% discount on both trips, but only regionals, not in suburbans, and you must buy or book both trips at once in the same ticket), under-25 youth discount (20%, you must show your youth card to get access to this discount), and special discount for being part of a large family (20% to 50% depending on category, you have to show your large family card to get access to this discount). There are also discounts if you buy a personal multiple-trip card for a fixed trip (i.e. fixed origin/destination) that is valid for a period of time (e.g. 10 trips to spend in a 45-day term, 10 trips to spend in a week, or 30-to-50 trips to spend in a 60-day term). However, in long-distance services, not subject to public subvention (e.g. Intercity, Alvia, AVE), you can get interesting discounts (up to 70%) if you book them in advance, depending on the dates and the occupation of the train at the moment of reservation

From my point of view, 47.20 euros full-fare, or 37.75 euros per trip with 20% round-trip discount, is an absolute rip-off, taking into account that the distance between Granada and Seville is about 250 km. However, Renfe offers an alternative (not shown in this video) consisting of Avant service Granada - Antequera, a train change in Antequera, and then a medium-distance service from Antequera to Seville, at 29.40 euros full-fare, or 23.50 euros per trip with 20% round-trip discount, which is a much more reasonable fare, and only takes 26 min more than the trip shown in the video

I visited Granada back in the 80's The Alhambra Palace is well worth a look. I bet your camera would have melted if you did a tour of Cordoba in July😂😂How can a vending machine not be stocked during a pandemic sheer laziness I think. Those table seats I just love with large folding tables. You can tell how new the whole setup is those stations were so bright and clean.

Another Brilliant Travel Report Dylan! First, I must agree with you on the truly sleek looks and livery, of these S-114 New Penolinos, so smooth running. I commented further down the comments, on the subject of filming complaints, so read there. I was amazed at no vending machines working, which is a bit odd, as even the NHS has vending machines in their Hospitals, for Staff and Patients, so a NO BRAINER THERE! Rail Travel in Spain, was always for the more affluent, donkey's and traps were for the rest. That was a very long time ago, but in Latin Countries, these thoughts hang on sometimes. Hot steamy buses, are hardly what your Travel Reports are about, we are boi's and boi's love their trains and designed comforts. Being stuffed into hot sweaty stinky buses in far away places, you could go missing forever and anyway, buses are more like public washrooms and as about as friendly :(

About the pricing; Avant is price fixed because it's subsided by national and/or regional goverments. It will be the same price if you book weeks in advance or if you buy your ticket prior to departure. The "commercial" trains (Ave, Alvia, Intercity and Trenhotel) (last one if it's restored) are the ones with better fares if booking in advance. Sad to see one of the iberian gauge tilting pendolinos (Class 490) abandoned in Seviila sidings. They were very similar to CP's Alfa Pendular, but in 3 coach formation. They were used on routes where the tiliting was not necessary (Madrid - Valencia in iberian gauge; before the AVE and then in Mediterranian corridor). The poor manteinance and later cracking bogies were the reasons for retire the entire fleet of 10 trains. Also, in high speed, the S-104, are also Pendolinos without tilting.

Very nice looking train, obviously styled after the Shinkansen. Interior looks nice, seats are ok for 2nd class. You are correct, the scenery is average, but I'd like to visit that castle. Downunder, we are still in lockdown but I'm looking forward to experiencing the latest iteration of our V/Locity sets on the Melbourne-Albury service after testing is complete and I can travel freely again. I can only dream of experiencing something like the S-114 New Pendolino as COVID is preventing ordinary mortals like me from travelling overseas (Unlike our Pfizer protected Prime Minister - although I don't think he will be welcome in France anytime soon). Yes, the earth did move for me the other day, but no damage here - wouldn't like to have been near the building that lost a wall though. Sleek looking train with that long, tapered engine. The boxy Granada Station was quite unique looking in a pleasantly old-fashioned way. I don't understand why a vending machine should be out of service, pandemic or not; a cafe car I understand. I liked the dry, golden grass, rolling hills and agriculture of the Spanish countryside. Santa Justa used to be a stunning old-style Spanish station. Now, IMHO, it looks like any modern station. Pity they sacrificed some of that old character. Can you still travel non high-speed between Granada & Seville?

Interesting video. The train’s interior looks very clean and efficient but somehow characterless - it reminds me somewhat of an upscale intercity bus. The exterior is also a bit bland. But it does the job and for that period before getting in to Seville you can really sense the high speed. Having recently travelled on Amtrak’s regional service in the North-East corridor it’s as if this is another form of transportation

@Bob el Silencioso German / Australian. It was very poor. Huge unemployment rate. In Barcelona was a huge drug problem. Local friends there asked us to not go to certain districts. Again, it was a very long time ago and my personal experiences, maybe it was not typical. Visited perhaps 6 times and would like to see it again one day. Loved the country and the people, my wife is 1/2 Spanish 😃👍

Because bar services aboard Renfe trains have been suspended due to the pandemic. Due to there not being contracts for catering and supplying edibles for on board services from external companies, vending machines are incidentially left without stock. Plus, masks are mandatory inside trains at all times and you can't eat through your mask.

@@El-Mengu We obviously have different outlooks on life. I always look for ways things can be done rather than reasons why they can't be done. (ie the difference between the private and the public sectors). Masks are mandatory on planes but passengers can remove them when eating/drinking.

Sad state of affairs that Britain was saddled with the outdated Class 800/801/802 Hitachi rubbish when we could have had this classy and safe train. Alstom makes great trains. And how sad to see that US graffiti is everywhere spoiling the views.
