This is a tribute for one of my best friends Callum Mackay. For a long time I wanted to write him a song, but every time I sat down I couldn't think of the right words which left me feeling frustrated. Callum died very shortly after Joe, another very dear friend. Trying to process both created a bit of a block, and to be honest ever since I haven't really been able to fully grieve whenever I loose someone close to me.
One day while sat at the piano I was playing around with melodies and this came out. Sometimes I don't have words to explain or express the thing that wants to be expressed. In those moments I'm so grateful for music
This is for you Callum Mackay

You can download Mackay here renmakesmusic.lnk.to/mackay Today is one of my favorite peoples birthday. There was a few times we shared birthday parties cause they were so close together, they were always chaotic and awesome. This is me sharing my birthday with him once more. Callum was one of those friends who was constant throughout school, he was a year older than me, always positive, always down to get up to whatever stupid shit was on the menu that day. Fond memories of getting older kids to go get us a bottle of vodka, then heading into the woods behind the co-op and getting so drunk we'd usually end up either throwing up or creating beautifully blurry memories. I loved and looked up to that guy so much. The last time I saw him was ironically at Joes funeral, I'd just won two bottles of wine on the raffle we set up, which was the last time I ever drank alcohol. I decided it would be a sensible idea to drink both, and we had a great send off, felt right all the lads being together in one place, despite the circumstances. Me and call were both absolutely hammered and reminiscing about old times and it felt just like being back in the woods. I got the news Callum had died 6 months after Joe took his life. At the age of 21 it was really difficult for me to process that two of my best friends could die in such a short space of time. Joe dying had hit me so hard that I was almost unable to process Callum going shortly after. I wanted to write something for him for such a long time to pay tribute, but there was a mental block and nothing ever felt right. One day I was sat by my piano and I started to play with no real intention, and this song came out of me that had no words, just music, and for some reason it managed to express what I wasnt able to with words. It felt fitting to hold onto it and release it for his birthday. This is for Callum Mackay Love and miss you always. Ren

Ren, I am a 54-year-old father of 2 sons close to your age in New Jersey, America. My generation was raised to not display ANY emotion if you are a male and I realized as I got older that this was just fundamentally wrong and really bad for my mental health, I did not raise my children this way and I know it was the correct decision. I have been a RENegade for over a year now and I just wanted to tell you that you are a true inspiration to even me. I love that you have persevered through more than most and can still be so loving and in touch with others with great perspective and Insight. All of this and still have the determination to put out such meaningful and poignant art. I say art because, it's so much more than just music, you're a poet, entertainer, a true artist in every sense of the word. I have never seen anyone that I would rather my own sons look up to than you, and not because of your music, but because of your immense character.

Could not have put that any better myself, he is truly amazing and someone I look up to when I'm feeling like giving up (even as a female) people like us and artists like Ren are gems in the rough, very few and far between. The internet is mostly bad and a narcissistic environment with people and machines watching our every move, sentence and things we use it for.. but safely music and artists like Ren, people like you that strive to be better and so selfless kind and unbelievably forgiving and understanding are big reasons I still bother with the internet. You, Ren, all the people we connect with, even if for fleeting moments, make the internet so worthwhile having.. I'm going thru another very very rough Trott with multiples of issues that are truly kicking me down so far, I keep fighting even if only a little, it's not in me to stop, then when I'm feeling so alone and lost and like there's no one that can truly understand, like now for me, I see your comment and gives me hope to fight harder to know I'm not alone in this big bad world and big bad life changing issues happening... Ren has been a lifesaver for me and I listen to him everyday since I discovered him approx 1yr ago... You amazing people help me to strive to be the person I am and to see I'm not the only one with so many losses, issues, illnesses etc. and to not ever give up fully... I'm so thankful I saw this now.. I was so scared I was going to give up, I'm in the darkest place I have ever been currently, your comment, Ren's beautiful music in this video I can feel I'm not alone and give me strength to not give up and it has truly helped me to think I might just get through all of this crap. Thankyou for the rare amazing humans like yourself, artists like Ren etc. to pick me back up high enough so I'm not drowning... Thankyou the universe works in amazing ways truly thankyou

Yes indeed. I too am a musician. My first instrument was Alto Saxophone for 6 years, and then guitar & bass guitar. Anywho, I say this from a music enthusiast point of view, not as a musician: No matter what kind of mood you find yourself, you can turn on the radio, and guaranteed there’s a song that can dramatically change said mood. And it’s not limited to just one genre of music neither. Music is extremely powerful.

One of the reasons I love Ren, coming off the back of a number one album most artists would be desperately searching for their next number one hit, Ren has kept it very low key, and announces he's releasing a piano only instrumental, you can tell he's just in it because he loves and respects music so much and we all benefit by getting raw and real content, respect!

There is a joke in the show "Home Movies" (a poorly animated show made by the dude who created Metalocalypse)...where the guitarist Duane is at practice...and his teacher says something like "now make the guitar tell a joke" lol. That still kinda makes me laugh, and if you play music for a bit of time it will probably make sense.

Single mom of a son who lost his dad at 14 he’s 25 now. I heard him singing this weird tune when he thought I couldn’t hear him. Had no clue what it was then a friend showed me Hi Ren. I immediately knew what he had been singing. At first I was scared it was so dark and beautiful. Then me and my son had a talk and he showed me more and more of what you’ve done. Then I watched interviews and learned even more. My son actually said mom that’s the only album I’ve ever bought. I was so happy to hear that. He doesn’t talk about his grief but I truly believe you’ve helped him through your music. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. If you ever come to Washington state we’ll be there to watch.

What adds to the tragedy of the drowning of Callum Mackay is that another lad also 22 died from drowning trying to save Callum's life . Lewis Darroch received a posthumous bravery award . That's tragic. A schoolmate of mine in 4th year drowned in the Gaerloch with other pupils in my year trying to hold his head out of the water. His feet were trapped by reeds. They got too tired to keep holding on and it was about 2am and they were quite isolated. I have never forgotten it and I am now 53. R.I.P. Graham & Callum.

For those who wonder what Mackay means in Welsh, a surname usually only originates from one area but I went to Wales 101, a website, and it said - Mackay Family History - This ancient surname is said to be of Manx and Scottish origins, although also later well recorded in the province of Ulster, in Ireland. It is a development of the pre 10th century Old Gaelic name "Mac Aodha", derived from "Mac" meaning "son of " plus the personal name "Aodh" meaning "fire", and originally the name of a Celtic god. Recorded in at least fifteen spellings including: MacKea, MacKee, MacKey, McKie, MacKie, McKee, and McCoy, there are many early references and recordings. These include Gilcrist M'Ay, said to be the progenitor of the famous Mackays of Ugadale, and to whom Robert 1st of Scotland granted lands in Kintyre in circa 1326...

Keep listening to this piece and it's just so beautiful! A conversion in musical notes, I'm blown away by Ren's music. What's weird is I also lost my best friend recently and this track, in particular, is an expression of how I feel. When I recall over and over the events leading up to the final point, the feeling broken and surpluses to requirements unable to do anything to change the outcome, the unspoken emotions asking myself why didn't I just...? I don't know I never had regrets before really, but now I do and they weigh heavy at times. I don't know if I ever get over it, if I will ever be able to finish the music we started together but I promised him I would so I have to try. I can remember the good times but maybe it's a part of my personality but I get stuck in the darkness but at some points I am able to just be calm and think of the fun we had together, the light really does shine on thoes memories❤. Fuck this is turning into an essay😂. I guess I'm trying to say, I have true respect and appreciation, I feel we relate to Ren on such a level not just because of his genuine profound talent, but also on a deeper level of his humanity, being here having a human experience that is relatable to everyone and we are lucky to listen to and to observe the growth and the manifestation of his true self, what extreme generosity of giving himself to us as he bares his soul. So brave and honest it evokes emotions in other's. A gift from a place that is other!

My first introduction to the prodigy that is Ren was his music video Hi Ren, his magnum opus. I cried, I lamented, I cheered. I was taken apart and put back together again. Ren is a genius of many realms. Singer. Rapper. Instrumentalist. Writer. Performer. Orator. He is a master of spaces between words and notes. A mover of people’s inner worlds. He walks among genres like a giant, linking them, conquering them, changing them. He truly can do anything. One day, the story of his life will be told on a Broadway stage, in the written word, on the big screen. Every so often, once a generation if we are fortunate, a virtuoso walks among us and changes the world, lifts us to dimensions never before imagined. This is Ren, and we are better because of his existence on this planet. I look forward to everything he’s going to do in his lifetime. What’s most important, beyond all else, is how deeply he feels for the people he cares about. Ren, if you’re reading this, I am so sorry about the people you’ve lost and everything you’ve been through. This world and why we’re here, why there has to be so much pain, is a damn mystery. But, like radio waves, you’ve put your friend’s song, and all that is your legacy, into the universe and they will live forever.

This was stunning. I was introduced to you through Hi Ren on a reaction channel and have been a fan ever since. I have fairly bad PTSD, and I live with chronic depression as well. I've never suffered from psychosis, but I do have that inner voice that is absolutely toxic, and just makes me feel lower than whale shit. Music is my life preserver, and Hi Ren has been an outsized positive influence in my continued existence since I first heard it. So thanks for that. And thanks for sharing this latest piece. It is truly beautiful, and it was the day I really needed to hear it. 16 years ago today I was wounded in combat. Today is my alive day. It is always one of the worst days of the year. This year, maybe not so much. I'm going to watch this video again now.

Right after the tenth re-play.. I feel I wanna keep on listenin'til I recon all REN's music inspirations. Freckled Angels theme is the intro.. of course.. then he switches into a narrative sequence of musical variations that represent the character and his story.. I'm Italian so I'm proud that REN could be inspired by Einaudi.. Morricone.. Piovani.. and all the top movie soundtrack composers. I think REN is the alchemist of the chromatic notes.. he seduces you throughout a comfortable melody... then he pokes you with a crescendo... the arpeggio pushes your heart beating faster... then he calms you down as a painkiller and he hugs you playing notes of armony.. of hope.. He's a cure for the soul! thanks REN!

Holy HELL-!!! All I WANT TO SAY IS I'm sorry for the pain that gave this piece life. The truth is there is no LANGUAGE ON EARTH THAT CAN COME AS CLOSE to expressing this kind of pain like the way he allowed that piano to. People with this kind of light in them will never understand the impact they make in this lost world..but Ren, I hope you do. Thank you SO MUCH and RIP CALLUM 🙏

How you gonna do that man? How you gonna make me cry in the first 30 seconds of an instrumental piano piece?

This is proof that words are often useless...Emotions always travel on their own channels, And music is the most powerful . Callum will be proud of that.

You're so right, sometimes there aren't words for things we feel or need to express.

I love this dude because he does what's important...just create great music. Nothing more needed, no box to check...just doing what feels real, simply creating.

Very nice. To tell the truth this peaked my interest because I live near a town called Mackay in Queensland Australia and was curious to see what this piece was about. Then I read your comment and am sorry to hear about your brothers. A fitting dedication though I'm sure they have a huge smile on their face where ever they are. Well done Ren 👍
