Another great video for us 964 owners. My Amazon green, beige leather interior car is my first Porsche. Fourth owner, 100 000 miles. No real problems after 2 years of ownership. The 964 feels more modern than the previous generations and in that respect I would recommend it for a first time buyer.

Great video. When I was looking for a 3.2 seven years ago and luckily came cross a nice mechanically sorted out forest green (L22E) 964 in original condition. Third owner with 82,000 miles for a nice weekend driver and love every single mile on it, 6 years of ownership with no problem at all. I alternate every other weekend drive with my 73 914 2.0 and loving both of them, want to make room for my garage but can’t let either one go yet.

I would recommend making your FB group private. Not everyone who owns these cars wants to advertise to the general public about their goings on with these vehicles. I belong to several Porsche groups, but only post in the ones that are private.

997.1 C2 owner here that really enjoys your videos and cars. You’ve owned more high end spec/fast 997’s with the C4S and Turbo. I totally get what you’re saying about them being too fast/heavy with the 4 wheel. I wonder if you would have felt the same experiencing a “base” C2. It feels plenty fast to me and could be a sweet spot for road driving at least as far as speed. Agree with you though that the air cooled generations have more character, and I can appreciate the less refined driving experience. Perhaps a future video idea if you haven’t completely written off water cooled to see if you feel there is anything to it. I’m in the Atlanta area and have a nice example you’re welcome to try if we ever cross paths.

I test drove an 08 C2 a few years back and loved it. As I recall, it had the same floating front end feeling all other C2’s have and I loved the exhaust note on it.

@@Rennthusiast I put Eibach springs on to lower the stance, though admittedly it was mainly to improve the look that I feel is needed on the C2. A good alignment really helped the feel as well. It’s never felt floaty to me but your comment will have me scrutinizing it more! Though don’t feel I reach the suspension’s limits on the street - car always sticks it. Exhaust note on the 3.6 is outstanding with the gundo hack which I did as well.

Another nice video, I’m not sure I entirely agree with your recommendation, but you are certainly spot on with respect to the gate fee to play with a 964. The prices are certainly not coming down, but there is still (generally) a gap between a G-body and a 964. Each person thinking of jumping into the Pcar pool needs to decide how much they are willing/able to spend to get into the car and then get it sorted. Virtually all air cooled Porsche’s will have some kind of “issues” to sort out, unless you pay the premium at entry.

A flip side of the coin on the perennial C2/C4 debate is the fact that the 964 was the first generation of air cooled 911's that had a C4 option (in fact, at first and for a while that was the only option for the 964). If you want to build a collection with representatives from each generation of air cooled 911's, a 964 C4 would be "required". The all-wheel-drive system of the 964 is based on that of the 959 and is very different (superior) from that of the 993. I have a 993 C2 and a 964 C4. While I love both cars, I find the 964 C4 more interesting and stimulating to drive than the 993 C2. Nice video.

Beautiful car! I like it better than your other two although they are all very nice. Why are there so many cars with sunroofs - was it a mandatory option for a time? I love the 964 best out of the air-cooled ones. I own a 2016 Cayman S 6-speed and love it. I like the size of the air-cooled cars before the 911 got so big.

Nice update, the Amazon green looked more beautiful and green in this video than ever before! Maybe some different lighting choices or post production editing? Also enjoyed hearing why you decided to jump on a 964 despite already having a 993 and 3.2. For me, I’d love to add a water cooled GT car to my 993 someday and call it good. Cheers

Funny that with ALL the hype on 991’s & now even 992’s (esp in GT space), with a “newer is better” misconceptions,… that you felt your 997 Turbo caused you to drive to fast. I retained my RWD 964 Turbo & picked up a 997.2 GT3 (perfect combo) as driver cars that FEEL fast even when you’re going slow. Visceral & raw experiences are to be cherished!

Hi Will, good that you point out about the early cars (pre '92) with leaky gasket issues. Just wondering, are these problem fixable permanently? E.g. like the ims issues in the first generation 997, they are fixable.
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 2 жыл бұрын
I do think they are fixable but I can’t recall exactly how. Maybe different gaskets? I’ll bet there’s good info out there on Pelican or Rennlist.

Thanks Will. I am very particular about green cars and only like them on certain cars and certain shades of green but this one may be my favorite of your collection....really nice example despite all the "pain" it has caused your wallet. I have a feeling if lookers will be patient, there will be alot of people unloading some toys in the next couple of years. Just my humble opinion. Thanks again....I'm watching out for the bell to ring that you're selling your 3.2!

Another great and sincere video Will. Are 964s really less readily available than 993s? If that’s the case, thank you Singer. Please be careful about generalizing on the early ownership sorting required of a 964; my ‘90 C2 was not like that. Agreed, the lack of a head gasket was a problem / known issue with early 964s. However, it’s worth checking the maintenance receipts. On cars with medium to upper 5 digit mileage, that issue will more than likely have been corrected. I would suggest that at least a share of the issues you’ve had to address with your 964 come back to the ‘buying the owner’s diligence’ issue. I appreciate that you are of the mindset to let it go, but as an outsider, I’m suspicious that the previous owner of your 964 was not aware it had a gearbox issue. I’ve been very fortunate to have encountered highly honorable people who were the previous owners of my two Porsches - they are true Porsche people. I agree 105% with your emphasis on doing a private sale - but for a different reason. When you buy a 30 year old car, you’re really dependent on the previous owner(s)’ love for / diligence / stewardship of the car. May I suggest that as an idea for one of the topics of current owner interviews.

I'm loving my 964. I recently upgraded to this from a 991.2 GTS. The 964 is far more fun and involving on the road, whereas I found the GTS to be too accomplished at everything and thus somewhat lacking in character.

I would disagree with your 964 first time buyer advice. The 964 is very modern when compared to an SC or 3.2. Cost to maintained will be relatively equal in cost. In fact an SC may be the most expensive of all 3. The SC's injection system is CIS. That alone could drain someone's cookie jar money if chasing an ignition or fuel problem. A Carrera would be next. Especially those with a 915 transmission and antiquated suspension. The 964 in my opinion will be the cheapest to run long term. I had a 964 Turbo 3.6 for 3 blissful years. I did a full service with some gaskets replacements to avoid any oil leaks and through my ownership, she ran flawlessly. The cost for service (not parts) will almost be the same for all three. Unless you want to perform a suspension upgrade, then the SC and the Carrera will run you more with torsion bars and rear spring plates(plus trailing arm bushings). To lower the 964, all you need is springs (maybe shocks). Labor wise the 964 will be less.
@Rennthusiast
@Rennthusiast 2 жыл бұрын
I respectfully stand behind it. I certainly can’t disagree with your maintenance experience and will readily acknowledge that each car’s needs reflects whether or not it was neglected by the previous owner. My 964 has been tough not just bc the previous owner clearly put off items my car needed but also because we have had a rough time finding parts. Why I believe the 964 isn’t the best air cooled car for the first time buyer is simply availability. What I know to be true 100% is that a first time buyer will have an easier (maybe not easy, but easier) time sourcing a 3.2 or an SC than a 964, hands down no doubt.

@@Rennthusiast Availability can be tough but being that we are in a global market, overseas purchases can be done. My buddy purchased a 964RS overseas for a very fair price. Yes, sight unseen. Photos and videos only. Car turned out to be in excellent condition for a car that was used on the track. Service history was great. Due diligence pays off but it's not always guaranteed. In your case you made a good purchase. You found a fantastic color combination that you love. That's 85% of the battle. The other 15% took some money to sort out but something tells me after a few miles you will forget all about it....at least until you run into the invoices again..lol

I know these reasons why to choose a 964 are not fitting in a youtube review: driving a porsche 964 gives you that feedback from the first moment you are driving a sport car. Fast but handleable.a car is doing exactly what you tell the car to do.

All 911 variations have their "gotchas" and the 964 is no more or less reliable than the others IMO. After 30 + years it really comes down to how well a particular car was maintained and treated. With that said my 964 has been quite costly.
