There was another midair in almost that same spot in 1994, also T6's. I had just parked my Jeep off Osage Rd, the planes came directly towards me when I saw the two planes on my left hand side collide about ¼ mile out. I can still hear the sound in my mind like a lawnmower hitting a big rock. I saw twisted pieces of aluminum flutter out in all directions, and one wing, possibly ¾ of it separate from one plane as that plane began to barrel roll downward, just clearing where we stood and fell almost straight down, and just hit the corner of a house. The prop was still going full speed as it hit, and chopped the stucco maybe 7 or 8 swipes. The dust flew out like a big smoke ring, but no fire. The sound took a few seconds to reach us it seemed. I then saw pieces hitting the ground all around us, and grabbed my son and pushed him under my Jeep. After 30 seconds we crawled out, and saw that separated wing spinning very fast as it fell to the ground across the street in someones driveway. NTSB was there within 15 minutes and took a statement from us. The other plane landed right away but I didn't see it. The dead pilots name was Ralph Twombly, and The video of this crash is on youtube. I can see my Jeep in that video in the distance. Very sad start to the races! My first year at Reno was 1978. Two T6's had a mid-race midair rounding the western pylons. One seemed to just disintegrate. The second appeared to be flying okay. Like Brian, I thought "maybe it will fly away okay". I anxiously watched as the T6 flew a slow descent into the ground. Both pilots killed. This year I was in the stands and watched this T6 race. Like nearly everyone else I wasn't watching them land. The gasps and screams from the few that were watching alerted the rest of us but it had already happened by then so most of us only saw distant dust plumes.

While I don’t race, I’ve done a few things with warbirds. And after the Texas raiders crash, me and a coworker had a similar conversation. If it were us, we’d want them to keep going too. The vast majority of the aviation community has a passion for it like nothing else. Don’t stop doing it on one’s behalf due to tragedy like this, it’s not how they’d want to be remembered, as the reason we stopped flying. Of course, day-of friends dying is different. I have been witness to 4 crashes, two fatal one of the two multiple. The double fatal was really horrible in many ways that will never leave my mind. Fortunately, the noise in my mind has lessened. For two weeks I couldn’t get away from it. It was so loud. The best description was a large pile of corrugated tin and you dropped a bowling ball from 100 feet into it. It rang in my ears for two weeks and writing this years later gets my eyes watering. It was a 172 that was having trouble landing and ended up doing a wing over from 400 feet straight in full throttle. Fortunately, everything will settle in your mind and become bearable. My buddy standing next to me still agrees it was a lot to deal with and isn’t far away in our minds. Just roll with it. Talk about it as you are doing. Justify it however you can. They were having a blast up until the crash. They knew the risk. Sorry for the long winded reply but I have a feeling you are PTSDing and I hope this helps a bit.

Watched the whole thing happen. After watching the planes hit the ground I looked up and the sky was full of debris falling and we had to run for cover. It was a horrible experience and such a terrible TERRIBLE way to end the air races. Especially because the race was over!!! There was no reason for them to be so close to one another... very sad. The very unfortunate part about witnessing this particular crash is that there’s not going to be a lot of witnesses because it was after a race. People pay attention to the races, but then they tend to go back to talking to their other people around them walking around the event, and just not being attention to the racers anymore, because the race is over, which is why I can tell you that a lot of people did not witness this happen unlike previous race crashes that took place mid race. I’m both thankful and regretful that people had to witnesses for the little that actually did see the incident take place because those witnesses can be very helpful to the investigation, and those who filmed it can add valuable information to the investigation, but it’s always heartbreaking to watch someone die and witness it happen. It’s even worse when multiple people are taken from us in a crash such as this.
@connorjohnson4402 Жыл бұрын
So just an imput on the continuing racing thing I cant speak to the other classes wanting to race or not but a big factor involved in them being able to continue or not is this state of the Crash , Fire, Rescue. With the crash locations both being off airport property neither of the two scenes were really secure entirely and the units on scene couldn't really have been released to return to their posts for races to continue. Had they had both been inside of airport property as well as off of any of the race courses there is a possibility they might have been able to continue but it pretty unlikely cause there's a lot that has to happen procedure wise with the incidents and associated investigations and being later on in the day timing wise it would've been hard to continue as well. But without enough of the assets they have out there available they wont continue racing because without the full compliment of units, they have a degraded ability to respond to any potential maydays or incidents. Just figured id mention one other aspect to things. Thanks for your video and it is a bummer to have things end this way and hopefully they will find somewhere new to keep racing going, but ill definitely miss it being right in our own backyards.
