Great work Em. It's interesting to see the thatch comparison.

I'm in queensland like you. I love lawn enough to watch other people cut grass as entertainment, but must admit to not having the level of drive or time to dedicate to my own lawn. I'm curious what lawn you would recommend for someone who is happy with a nice green carpet (not overly stressed if it isn't even strictly one variety, haha)? I'm happy to mow regularly with good practice, get rid of weeds, apply pre-emergent, fertilise etc. But I don't want to have to completely reno every year. I see a lot of grass sites recommend tiftuf for our climate when you stipulate low maintenance, weed and drought resistance. BUT, then I see everyone finding the same thing = heavy thatch, and having to renovate every year. I love a nice looking lawn but that's just not going to happen! Would I be better of with a sir walter? Second question = I see when most people lay new turf or reno/top dress their lawn. They they seem to set their soil/sand level, level with the edging as you have in this video. Leaving no more room for filling/leveling without becoming proud of the edges. Why don't people lay new turf with the cut height in line with paths, edging. Instead of the soil height being in line? Surely you reach a point where you don't have to continually dump a cubic meter of sand on your lawn? Loving your content!

If you want to avoid having to do a full reno, buff could be a good option. Mow with a catcher to remove clippings and once a year scalp it down to expose the stolon's. (never scalp to dirt like couch variants) fertilise and top dress as required (again not too thick must still have leaf/stolon visible) and then maintain at your desired cut height until the next year scalp. This way you won't have to scalp, scarify, core etc like a full couch reno. Buff is a good medium for someone who wants a green lawn but does not want to invest all the extra time that other varieties may require. Your 2nd question about the levelling to the height of the edging (others may correct me here) I believe is to do with using reel mowers and avoids the blades having a chance to contact a surface other than grass and allows continuous lines across the area if that makes sense... and yes at some point you will achieve the desired levels and top dressing won't be required. Hope this helps

@burto1112121 brilliant help! Thank you. That makes total sense too. I just don't think about cylinder mowers with my usual routine of whipper snipping the edges. Then, running around the perimeter with the rotary as the first passes. It makes perfect sense if they're trying to achieve a stripped finish all the way to the edges without a border. Thanks for the detailed reply!

The dark color of IronCutter is incredible. I have a small trial going with Sir Grange and Iron Cutter to see which one I lean to for my north facing verge strip. Anything that stood out for you with IronCutter?

Hey Emma, what are your thoughts on the Supaswift Big Bob? Do you think it will scalp low enough, for what you need? Thanks!

Great informational video! A good choice to avoid aeration; IronCutter does love to be scalped and verticut (even early days after installs), and look forward to seeing how well it responds for you! 💚🫶

that makes no sense verticutting it early days after install. only a height reset and top dress would be needed.
