RENOVATING A PALACE Ep 2: Making our Italian IKEA Kitchen feel luxurious & unique

Welcome to our dream home in Florence, Italy, today where we share the final before & after reveal of the renovation and restoration of our portion of an historic Italian palace. In today’s apartment tour, we’ll take you through the interior design process of creating and building our kitchen within this space with a mix of contemporary, baroque, and victorian influences. We show the installation of the kitchen, the addition of bespoke design elements like the Carrara marble countertops, and how we illuminated and dressed the space with antique, vintage pieces, to ultimately create our extreme kitchen makeover during the course of five long months!

WOW! I am absolutely blown away by your kitchen remodel!!! When you said IKEA, I was like…..😳; however, it looks stunning!!! I was surprised at the amount of cabinets you used. I didn’t think there would be enough storage but you proved me wrong. The island with the outlets is a game changer. What a fabulous idea! 👍🏻 I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. I hope your neighbors understood you were at the mercy of the supplier and then the shipping of materials/appliances etc. It’s not like you want wires sticking out of the walls inside and outside of your apartment….🙄. The ceiling fresco is amazing…what a true art and that you can see it everyday is…🥰 Also a very good job on restoring the fireplace screen. You can’t even tell there were paint chips missing. I've have just subscribed. What a stunning kitchen in an equally stunning city. I love the greens and gold. The only thing ,and this is purely personal, are the two mirrors opposite each other. The kitchen is so beautiful. I really love it and appreciate all your hard work. There are so many elements to redoing a kitchen. My only comment is to maybe flip the mirrors. I think the smaller one would be better suited over the fireplace. The mirror you have over the fireplace looks a little disproportionate since it is so wide.

I love the concept of starting with the ceiling fresco, which is a beautiful and balanced as a work of decorative art unto itself. (Your subjugation of kitchen's technology to its more classic design elements is really admirable, by the way.) You are right to keep the color of the walls and cabinetry the same as the field color of the fresco and then introduce the same colors into the space below in about the same proportions as they are used in the fresco. All through the video I kept waiting for the green. It did appear quite successfully in the form of plants and a lampshade, etc., but I don't know happened with the bar stool covers. They seem to be a clunker in the harmony. The green is too dark and too viridian. It needs to be a lighter leaf green, nearer the weightless shade in the fresco. It seems a shame to come so close to perfection and then .... Also you might try some graceful indoor palms for their lines and shapes that are not so jazzy mid-century as the philodendron leaves.

It’s interesting you ask this because we were concerned about the same thing! But we were reassured from the previous owner that there’d once been an open fireplace in that room for at least a century with very little detrimental effect on the frescoes. Nevertheless we made sure the auction hood was super powerful because one can never be too careful

Marble is not suitable for kitchen countertops. 1 drop of wine, orange juice, grapefruit or vinegar on it and it's a stain that won't go away. Granite needed for this. Marble is not hard enough.

We’ve been using the marble countertops for 8 months and they still look great. The 2000 year old marble surfaces in the Pantheon still look pretty immaculate too 😄
