Party-loving homeowners, Linda and Lee dream of traveling the world…But after two years on the market, and over 80 viewings, they’re still stuck in their three-bedroom, 1950s terrace home in Swindon, Wiltshire. The unsellable property features institutional flooring, loads of unfinished DIY jobs, and a shattered front window. And beyond the trash-filled backyard, also contains ratty furniture, a broken bed, huge hairballs, random cigarette butts, and piles and piles of dirty laundry.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They vow to get the home under control. And while John has a serious chat with the agent about commissions, and then encourages the couple to replace him, Sofie undertakes the radical cleanup, and performs a spectacular makeover. Will their plan revive the property’s prospects and the couple’s wanderlust?

The lesson here is that if you don't motivate your agent, they won't put much effort into selling it; there's no reason for them to do so. You have a responsibility to engage with the effort. Still, their commissions are way too high which creates resentment in the public so that many people feel the whole thing should be dumped on the agent for that amount of money.

I guess that the home owners could not afford sprucing up the kitchen and the bathroom, They set the budget they give to the show. They did the maximum with the budget., they did a good job with the big bedroom but they could not put new flooring, so they painted it , it would have been better with a new flooring. I agree with you, what about the kitchen and bathroom? It seems like the owners bought the home thinking they would rip the old carpets and paint and that would be it. On top of that they were slobs, they are young and not bothered to vacuum and dust and pick up the garbage ?!! Money is not an excuse in their case. That he says they'd only just got out of bed before visits, still doing the washing up, and also supposedly didn't tell them on occasions that they were about to have viewings? That's not a good agent. He needed to tell them how it is - smelly sheets left on an old bed for 6 months? Shot out window or perhaps hit with a screw driver but NEVER his hand as claimed, huge balls of dust and also hair, and broken glass on the floor. I'm sorry, but that house not selling was NOT the agents fault in any way IMHO. To have him work for you for 20 mos., then take the sale away from him when you FINALLY get YOUR act together lacks integrity in a big way. Bad advice. Swindlers. I've to give this one a thumbs down for that. Sophie doesn't need that guy.

I will not give it a thumbs down cause I love this show, but definitely the couple was a joke. Pick people who care about selling and need help, not people who are lazy and just wanted to have other people do their job. Also, the "new" guy really pushing for getting a new agent was just awful.

Yes, most people have more home pride than this. I'd be mortified to have anyone see my house if it were anywhere near the state this one is in. I imagine it didn't smell very good inside, either. Who knows, maybe they did "clean" it beforehand and thought the state it was in was acceptable. (I've known people like that.) I kept our house spotless and clutter-free while it was on the market. It was ready in 30 minutes to show after the Realtor called for an appointment. It's a 3,000 sq. ft. home. (I had to have time to pull up the blinds all of the way to let the sun in, turn on lights, move the dog bowl to the garage, etc.)

You don't know what goes on behind the scenes Maybe it was suggested that the house look bad ( for ratings) to make the before and after look better. It's been 2 years? The owners aren't motivated to sell. Who knows if the house showed like that when it first went on the market..probably much nicer. A house doesn't become gross and dirty like that over night.. The couoke probably gave up caring after the first few months with no sale. What we do in our area is that if property doesnt sell in a couple months, its taken off the market. Buyers do not like homes that sit on the market for long periods of time..either asking price is too high / sellers won't negotiate or something is wrong with the home itself. Area could be the next problem. The way people take care of a home or lack there of is a turn off, but it shouldn't be the reason why its been sitting on the market for so long. Could be a combination of things, repairs, price, and the area..maybe places aren't selling that fast in that specific area..

Everyone who is feeling bad for the "poor" estate agent don't! I sold properties for 13 years and he wasn't doing his job by continuing to list the property in the state it was in. As an agent you have a fiduciary responsibility to your "client" to guide them in the sale to get the best price and terms on a sale of the property. He didn't do them any favors by keeping the listing in the state it was in. You get what you pay for and in this instance the sellers got an a sub par agent.

The blue living room and dark pink bedroom (not to mention the large floral wallpaper!) all violate Sofi's and the program's constant advice to go light and neutral with paint and wall coverings. While the house is nicely cleaned, de-cluttered and staged for the time this was recorded, many serious buyers would walk right out after seeing how much re-painting and wallpaper stripping they'd have to do before moving in.
