David and Mary are desperate to move closer to their grandchildren, but after 18 months on the market and a staggering £90,000 price cut, their East Boldon family home of 30 years has only been viewed once. With its three reception rooms, mature garden, and seaside location, the immaculate three-bedroom, 1920s townhouse would be perfect for a young family…But with no one coming to view the home, there is no hope of a sale.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They vow to free the retired couple from their unsellable home. And while John revamps the marketing strategy, adding a second regional agent, Sofie appeals to the family target market by modernizing the home and bringing the décor up to date. Will their efforts pay off with a sale?

I was so impressed by Sophie’s poised, lovely manner and gentle kindness to the couple. I am not implying the couple wasn’t deserving at all, but I just mean to say that such graceful tact and diplomacy isn’t something that comes so easily to everyone. I was pleased to see it. I would have been hard pressed to have been as graceful and lovely as she was to them. She was so sensitive and nice. Kudos to Sophie. This was a very enjoyable episode, but I love them all.

This was a really good makeover. The dining room was beautifully transformed and the "half sauna, half nursing home" 😮😂 a wonderful transformation too. I wasn't overly keen on the family room but I'm not the target market for that, but it definitely showed off its purpose. Sofie was so wonderfully diplomatic and respectful here. That had been such an amazing family home with 30 years of wonderful memories, she handled it well. I wonder if the couple took the new design ideas to the next place, lighter less formal patterns and colours, less chintz and more modern curtains. I hope the next place gives them wonderful memories too 😊

The so-called family room looked like a kid's bedroom, not a room usable by the entire family. That bookshelf looked particularly cheap and cheesy. I guess the adults could go sit in those uncomfortable wicker chairs in the "conservatory," which definitely wasn't my idea of a charming English conservatory, more like a hall no one could figure out what to do with it. I hope the realtor was embarrassed into using the British version of MLS, instead of just letting it sit on the local market. She was probably trying to saves the fees.
@tsgrandma9837

I have to respectfully disagree. The dining room wasn't all that bad to start with. The curtains and knickknacks needed to go. Some of the furniture needed to be taken out and some just needed moved around. The wall paper could have remained if they would have painted the chair rail white to match the trim of the window, it would have been really pretty. By painting over it the new home owners are going to in for a surprise within a year, maybe two when the paint starts to chip and peel, leading to a very costly repair job. Removing the blinds and not putting shades or another type of blind up flooded the room with way too much light. At least with the vertical blinds the light could be controlled and wouldn't be so blinding. The sheer curtains weren't needed as the window is beautiful on its own. Also, carpet in a dining room is just gross. That's where the money for that room should have went for hardwood flooring instead of carpet. The conservatory remodel was heartbreaking. The natural wood on the walls and floor would have lead to nature flowing from the outside in and visa versa if done the right way. She complained about all the sitting stating, "When are five people ever going to sit in here at one time?", referring to four chairs and a footstool; but yet placed seating for four right back in there. That little room would have made for an awesome greenhouse! By leaving the natural wood on the walls, replacing the floor with a natural tile, taking down all those shelves, adding a plant table with plants on it, and a couple of floor plants, and the little table, painting the door a more natural color, that would not only flow to the garden but would have allowed the garden to flow inside as well. No more nursing home, but instead a very Zen and peaceful place to sit and relax.

Oh I know! I actually shouted "no, don't paint over that beautiful wood!" It was gorgeous knotty pine, and that room could have - should have - been updated with a soft couch/loveseat or futon, and some bean-bag chairs (hello kid friendly) to make it a cozy place to have a bit of tea, read a good book (the shelves would have held a good, small-library collection), or scroll through your phone on a rainy day, or a cold sunny day. So many ways that could have been better.

On the Canadian show, Sophie and Anthony Sayers never painted the walls white. I guess when Sophie arrived in Canada, she went to the Home Depot, and saw all the paint colors, and used her imagination. She would actually complain about the white stark rooms. The U.K. show needed an Anthony to refurbish the rooms.

Sophie was somewhat harsh in her judgment of the house. It was clean and presentable, even if she didn't like the "styling." Since only 1 viewing was had in 18 months, it wasn't the appearance of the house that was preventing an offer from happening! Fault the real estate agent(s) - they weren't doing their job and properly marketing. There WAS internet in 2008-2009 when this was filmed, for goodness sake. Of course, in 2008-2009 when the market in real estate had pretty much crashed in most areas, other than certain areas of Canada that remained relatively "hot."

"Do something poorly, hoping you will not have to do it." Well, it works. But not in my home. You are taught how I want it done, and you will help! Or an activity you want will be canceled. This works for me every time. Though you must start them young. Start with the oldest and the ideas pass down by the others listening and watching what is expected. I hate "no". Just love yes and maybe. And my kids did, too, because I was fair. Yes, ment yes. No was always a NO. Then comes maybe, which means---do not bother me while I think how to make it work. One, just one, bother, will be, NO. Because maybe is closer to a yes than the no. Fair? My kids thought so.

Drapes are a pain as the need to be taken down & washed sometimes. The vertical blinds of today come in different colors and patterns that warm up a house, yet make it MORE MODERN. If they were so bad, companies wouldn’t still sell them. I see the high end ones too, with the remote control & people love those. It depends on your personal preference/ taste. Ours is contemporary.

Never never never paint over wallpaper!!!! They destroyed that beautiful wood by painting it; a whitewash would showcase the wood!

It seems to me that British estate agents don't do anything for their money! Shocking! The family room is terrible... It seems that is the main living room.. So why make it look like a kids play room.. Terrible! Really odd choices in UK homes... Would totally backfire in Europe.

The north-facing sunroom is perfect as an art studio. Plenty of natural constant light. But it would need to be heated (I've noticed that they do have radiators in there) and double-glazed. But I wouldn't buy that house for one simple reason: it's on a main road.

Confusing - why are the comparable houses in the area shown at "2008 prices"? Comps are usually houses that have sold within a year and the video is from 2021. It's fine to cater to the reality of the local market's appeal to young families - smart marketing. But shame on somebody for painting over wallpaper! The wall should be stripped and primed before painting. Hope the home sold quickly after the updates.

I rent a one bedroom with loft apartment, and lived in the apartment for a quarter century. Six years ago, I decluttered, and discarded 60% of the contents. It looked amazing and spacious. Sadly, I started to fill in the gaps, and it no longer looks clean and spacious. Time to call the haul away junk company!

Give the homeowners a little credit, Sophie. It is a sound, traditional home. The issue is that sound and traditional are out of style, now. That decor is about 40 years old. Who knows what will be in style 40 years from now. For the record, the furnishings probably do not convey. I don't understand why house hunters can't grasp that.

It's a lovely big home, but so outdated. All I would see when walking in is the enormous amount of work with painting, wallpaper removal, and getting rid of those awful carpets. I guess they choose the worst rooms to make over since they can't do the whole house. The sunroom looked great! How many scarves does the little guy have? So much time wasted with him carping at the agent and asking the residents if they like living there.

I hate the way English homes have a dozen different colours on the wall and so many patterned carpet styles and colours. Why wasn't the entire ground floor carpet refitted with a new carpet as it was all awful- I caught a glimpse of the hallway carpet- burgundy red- YUCK. How old fashioned was the kitchen/bathroom as they are the most expensive and messiest to renovate? I did like the conservatory but I would probably have repainted the conservatory doors too..
