I have another gentleman, my French teacher in the 1970’s, that was placed in a Catholic school to hide him. After the war he actually walk hundreds of miles back to his home. He lost much of his family including his father. They were Jewish. I think it was 20/20 ( an American tv show) that told his story. ❤ He has some stories on KZbin - Paul Schwarzbart. An amazing man! Thank you for these amazing stories ! And your hard work!

@@PreservationEnthusiast Dan is really a "prize." Like everyone, I am pulling for him in his project, but I wonder if he is qualified to "save" those supporting walls? That is the big question. Safety-wise, can those crumbling walls even BE saved (as he is doing)? To rebuild a castle ruin of this immense size, it seems to me that one must have sufficient quantities of 1) manpower, 2) money to do the job correctly, and above all, 3) the engineering knowledge to assure it's structural integrity. I know that Dan possesses the heart and energy for the job but does he have those three ingredients? In other words, is he over his head? I scratch my head when I see him just smearing some mortar in a void in the wall brickwork and "call it good." It looks neat and tidy, but is it really shoring up the wall?

Dan….. this was an amazing interview for me as he was a child during that time and my mom was I think in her teens during the war …… she became part of French underground near the Swiss border as her village was there guiding shot down American soldiers through the woods to the next person so they could be saved from the Germans.

My family is connected to another of the survivors from this chateau (not a member of my family, but members of my family knew and worked with him). I was shocked to find this out! Sadly he has already passed away, but he also made a pretty significant impact in the world. It's amazing how it's such a small world, isn't it.

You mentioned before that Bill Graham once lived at the chateau. In California where I am, he became a very successful concert promoter. I met him a few days before his death and he was very nice. It’s fun to have that small tie to the chateau.
