The Irish Homestead

The Irish Homestead

Күн бұрын

Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, we make some mistakes with the lime pointing and take down the gable apex.

If you watch the channel Escape to rural France , that guy has done loads of Lime mortar work and he always uses a wet sponge immediately as he points with Lime , and doesn't appear to wait until it dries to use a wire brush as you do

Also in Portugal expats work the same as Dan. Perhaps it is because of the climate they sponge the lime about 3 hours after their pointing?

I have done hundreds mt² of lime pointing here in France. The colour of the sand determines the final colour, try to always use sand from the same supplier. I rub back within an hour or two of applying the lime - easy, easy to clean. You are doing such a great job....bon courage folks ❤

I watch a KZbin channel called The Moons. It’s an English family who moved to France , live on a farm and rescue horses. They have the neatest pair of Tom turkeys, rescued from becoming Christmas dinners. They are such a hoot, I didn’t realize turkeys could make such good pets. Could make a hilarious addition to your family livestock. Your house is looking so much improved where you’ve been doing the pointing. It will continue to be a learning curve, just remember, you see more mistakes than anyone else ever will.

Fantastic job on the pointing, it’s all a learning curve isn’t it, but you now have a skill that you didn’t have before and that’s amazing isn’t it? That gable end pointing looks amazing too, it makes such a difference to how the wall looks ❤ you’re both chocking on through the jobs, well done! Gate posts look great, that’s another job on our ever growing list of things to do as well! 😮😂 Toby is sooo cute, I must admit I’m a little with Sam on the equine fear…I think I’d be fine with a donkey but horses do make me nervous! Bad experience as a child and I think it made me really wary of horses. Anyway enough about my hang ups….fantastic work and video too. 😘

Lime Mortar Pointing - Very dry mix (wet enough so you can mould it into pooh shapes in your gloves). Wire brush (gently, brush you are using is too aggressive) after 18 to 24 hours, when it crusts over. Soft brush immediately to expose grit. Perfect.

I’ve seen lots of people do the lime pointing and they don’t let it set that long. Usually scrape back same day or next day. Maybe it’s different in Ireland because it’s so wet. I’m not doing the pointing so I don’t know. But you are both doing an excellent job.its such a big difference in the building.

Yep we did it wrong! We won't be making that mistake again. I'm broken today after scraping that wall back.

For some reason I can't explain I watched a video on how to plant trees. It was on YT by Blue Oaks ATC LLC 'Plant Trees Like An Arborist- Avoid This Common BIG MISTAKE' I thought it was well done and you might want to take a look since you're going to plant some tree's.

Hi guys !! Stumbled upon your channel a few months ago, and am LOVING watching your progress. My wife & i decided to ditch Sky TV, cause we are far more interested (and stimulated) by what we see you guys doing. One observation - i find Sam's voice very clear on the audio, but find Beck's voice more blurred. Dunno if she wears the mic too close, or in a different location. Anyways, keep going. Cant wait for the launch party !!!! lol Ohh, and are we allowed to know roughly what part of Ireland you are in ??

Hmm that's interesting thanks. I'll look into it. Really glad you are enjoying the videos. Lots of our friends and family seem to be finding youtube more interesting than tv these days. We are in Co.Leitrim in Ireland. I can't wait either! Hopefully within the 13 months grant timeframe. 🍀🤞

Great video! You showed and talked about something I haven't seen on other videos, just how much more work there is if you don't get back to clean off stones soon enough. Being old and lazy I would use a wire wheel on a grinder but that could ruin all the hard work you've done re-pointing.
@theirishhomestead

Hi! Yes we totally stuffed up. The people we watched cleaned back a couple of days later but we are realising that is a mistake here at least. Big lessons learned but thats what it's all about, showing others that you can do it with no experience. You just have to roll with the punches as they say.

Another great vlog. The walls are looking great too, and mistakes are just learning opportunities by the way. 😊 I really hope you get lots of dry weather so you can get on. It was lovely seeing your son swinging on the tree. What a lovely place to raise your children in. They must be really proud of their mum and dad. Are you still getting lots of eggs? I couldn't believe it when you got double yolks. Have a lovely week. ❤

Hi Patricia. I hope we do too. Think we all need a break from the wind & rain. Euan lives the rope swing. In fact we are putting a second in another tree at some point. We get double yolks at least twice a week! My daughter loves them. Hope you have a great week also. ♥️

I so love you dedication working in all weathers, that wind is crazy. I loved Sam's energy with everything it's so good to see. Toby looks really calm and happy, maybe he's finding hers hooves a little sore/strange as he hasn't had them done for a while, it's like getting used to wearing new shoes in a way. Great video, see you guys next week 😃👌🌈🤟

Gates are going to be a Great addition, the rusty bit just sand it Back and you can get galvanising paint, just sprays on to bare metal .in fact i think i have some knocking about I'll see if i can find it for you. We're meant to have a good week this week. Todays been glorious. Dont worry about using modern building materials its not cheating. Im sure if concrete lintels were available 250 years ago they'd have been used. Exposed wooden ones start to rot as soon as they're put in .warp then cause no end of bother till they're replaced and the whole saga starts again. Have a great weekend . 👍
