The Derelict Cottage Renovation Continues! Episode 35

Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.

You should think about IMMEDIATELY planting a hedge row that will grow high enough to block out that “eye sore” view of your neighbours place! That will give you nice privacy, as well as a “wind block” if they ask why! The sooner you plant it, the sooner the better, look after it watering fertilizing with Toby’s offerings the Faster and bigger it will get. A nice tall hedge will definitely add ambiance to your place.

I think we sometimes think it doesn't look like much is happening on a week to week basis, but hopefully once the barn is structurally sound things will look like they are progressing more.

You know from experience that renovation work is always two or three times longer, because of the hidden gifts that old construction seems to give but just keep cracking on. I agree with you about just rebuilding those parts of the wall because in the log run it will be less time consuming. I think the pointing work looks wonderful women always have better outcome with those type of detailed jobs. Good luck and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your daughter.

Thank you. Yes it seems like the best option especially as I have to increase the head height in the one that will be a door. I find filming and editing on a weekly basis can make it feel like not much progress is happening but it's all the little jobs that are the foundations for the visually 'big' jobs.

Great job ! The cottage is looking better and better every week !!! Stone work is hard work but the one thing good about it you save on gym membership's !! Be careful with that bigger generator make sure the room is well ventilated ! Putting it closer to and open window or door would help ! The weather never changes in Ireland ,wet and damp even in April !!

Yes we keep the doors and of course the windows open when it's running. Carbon monoxide scares me. The stone work is feeling epic at the moment but we have to get it right before the roof goes on. Yes gyms are definitely not a requirement right now! 🤣

You guys and youngsters are doing tremendous job, the project is coming along and the children are learning and joining in, fantastic in this day and age, they will be so much more rounded later in life for the experiences gained. Looking at the next project, the replacement of the lintels made me smile, because it reminded me of a previous big influence in my restoration projects. He would comment on what were big concerns to me saying " An Ounce of fear/trepidation put together with a Pound of thought and planning and used with a Stone of effort and work, will save you a Ton of trouble" Sometimes it hurts both financially and time but he was right. I think you are doing the right thing, those wall sare fragile and the benefits of "Strip, rebuild as per need will deliver so much benefit and piece of mind. Crack on guys your heading the right way.

I really like how Sam stops for a brew instead of rushing things. We have started drinking Yorkshire tea since I started watching this channel. We like it cold and sweetened or hot. I'm from the USA, but my girls always say it with the same accent ya'll use! ❤ I loved the rainbow, also. Good omen!

That's so amazing! I love that you are drinking Yorkshire Tea! Wherever do you get it? We have run out of Yorkshire Tea sadly, and it's nigh on impossible to find here. We are now on Barry's, which is not too bad, to be honest. I quite like it, Sam is less keen! At least 3 brew breaks per day are vital. It's also a time to review progress and make life changing decisions 🤣
